I am a new one. Vehicle is Space Wagon 1999 2.4 GDI. It's a wonderful car, but engine...
Everybody knows this noisy 4G64 GDI ones of course. :smile2:
I have repared some parts of engine: Cylinder head cleaning, neu timing belts with all tensioners.
At first start was the engine very laud and hard.
I've done some videos on youtube. It's something to hear.
Before repair:
cold
warm
After repair:
Here you can hear this low frequent nocking. I don't mean lush ajusters, they "make their part" everyway.
cold.
Please listen at 00:30 while rpms increasing.
can a member tell me if that 4g 64 . engine has balance shafts
worn bearing in the balance shaft makes the same knock
or
number 4 WORN
my ears say its piston slap /conrod bearings or gudgeon pin
Yes 4G64 engine has balance shafts as 4G63 does.
If i remove oil pan can i get access to balance shafts and shake them?
Conrods is not good :frown2:
I 'll remove spark plugs, turn crankshaft a little bit and push pistons a little bit with a screwdriver. May be so i get some clearance. But how to distinguish between play in conrod or gudgeon pin?
Ok i'll take a look but i need either garage or auto lift.
I've heard this engine does not have any repair sizes for crankshaft pins and if i am lucky i can change only bearings, if not...
Sound from first Video is so familiar
Second Video is terrible
if it was my motor and cranks bearings etc checked out ok
i would do a balance shafts elimination and timing belt kit
reason the noise is closer to cylinder one
had the same problem with 4G54 balance shafts
from the youtube description
NOTE;
I have placed a DTI on the crank and measured for walk... its perfectly true.
Removed the rod bearings and they are also perfect nothing spun etc no signs of damage or knocking.
I checked timing against what i could see with the engine still in the car and that also looks good, oil pump sprocket, crank, balancer shafts etc all align.
It is 100% louder up top than when under the car, it rears its ugly head when the engine/oil is warm with the aux belt off! but with the aux belt on its there from cold :s weird...
There are two balance shafts the one i can get to at the rear of the block seems fine it does rotate slightly even with the belt attached but i think this is just abit of backlash, i get very very little sideways movement from it a small click of less than 1mm end to end... i dont think its enough to cause this noise.
I Leak tested all 4 cyclinders all below 10% leakage... The noise is louder at cylinder 1 than 4...
From last Video: is it balance shaft knocking or piston? He has found just a little play in b-shaft, but made no conclusions about pistons. Does he mean 1m walking or play in bearings? It schould be is enough to make a noise i think.
B-shafts are walking, i assure myself.
On this weekend i do at first test with pushing screwdriver toward pistons and if i encounter something let Forum know
Today i have pushed some hard pipe towards the pistons and didn't heard (felt) any klick. It was not easy because of special piston shape of GDI engine. Of cause you cannot identify any slight play.
May be next week i get access to garage and get oil pan off.
