So I picked up a 2000 Galant locally on the cheap side. I brought it for diagnostics today and found out it needs some repairing. Can anyone give me a price range for the repairs? The items are 02 sensor pre cat, A CAM sensor, A VAF sensor, spark plug wires to coils and a valve cover gasket.
There's also some front end damage, how much would it cost to fix?

Hello - I have an 01 Galant with 175000 miles and some change. I've recently got a check engine light and the code reads P1751 main control transmission. not all the time but sometimes from a dead stop when I go to accelerate, the car gets real sluggish, almost as if it were trying to start out in a higher gear (you have to floor the gas pedal to get any real acceleration). I know I need to change out my transmission fluid, but does anyone have a clue about the code, or the symptoms I've described? Thank you!

I have expereinced the common heater control valve failure. I removed the metal arm and pushed it into the open position and now have heat again. Everything seems to work fine, heat, ac, etc. So why bother replacing it? I know it the AC would operate more efficiently if it were able to close. But is that it? Do I risk damaging anything if I just leave it in the open position? Thanks in advance.

I want to replace my fog lights bulbs with some new ones I bought to match my headlights.
I see there is 1 screw that holds the fog light in place. The screw looks stripped, but I am still able to turn it, even though it feels kind of "stiff" when I do. I unplugged the connection from underneath and then tried to wiggle the fog light a little bit, but it just won't budge. Am I missing something? Help please!
-----------------------------------
Nevermind people. I figured it out myself. (That 1 screw I mentioned was never supposed to come out. Ha!)

About midway on my 2003 Galant GTZ, probably near where the cat is, a part that looks like a heat shield fell off on the highway. I couldn't recover the part, but it had been dangling a little bit for a day or so. I had intended to take it in but I was waiting till today.
Is this in fact a heat shield for the cat? And is it necessary to replace? Or are the mechanics going to talk me into replacing the entire cat?
There doesn't appear to be any change in exhaust noise levels so I'm pretty sure it isn't an integral part of the cat or the exhaust system.
Any help would be appreciated. Like I said, I don't have the part.

On a 2001 Galant, I only have 2 side splash guards inside the fender wells. I have no front shields, but I can't find any confirmation that there should be. Should we have these? I can't get a dealer to confirm anything except the two side pieces, but the right side has a fastener hole that would suggest there should be more plastic shields under the front bumper. Just laying on the ground looking up towards the pulleys, it seems like way too much is exposed. My '02 Lancer is fully shielded across the front and sides underneath.
Any help, pictures, or parts links would be awesome.

Sorry if this has been asked but I have searched and searched.
The Blower switch for turning the A/C on and off the light has burned out and I would like to know the size, and for the defrost switch also.
Thanks
Ps if anyone needs to see where these little bulbs are located, so you can change them. I have pics.

Recently the temperature gauge on my 03 Galant has stopped working. It's now stuck below cold and it doesn't move.
The fans still turn on and off as normal and the check engine light is not on.
I have replaced the temperature sending unit as the mechanic recommended and still the gauge doesn't budge. I was told to try to ground it to see if t he gauge jumps to hot and it doesn't.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I cannot find anything about the DMF but apparently it is very critical when servicing, or changing the timing belt (which needs doing now.)
I am sure the local Mitsi garage knows what it is doing but I would like to know what it is in French. So any kind French/Canadian member help me out. Or indeed anyone with the knowledge.
Many thanks.

I'm hoping to get some ideas here on our 2001 Galant 6cyl.
The last few times it's rained heavily and I think it's when we've hit some standing water or just some heavy water in the streets in general, the dash lights light up and power steering is lost. Engine doesn't die and after 30 seconds or so of limping it will return to normal.
I'm thinking splashing water might be sort of shorting out something and then once the water drips away it's ok, but I'm not sure where to look. The power steering unit is up high in the engine, so that doesn't seem logical.
Fortunately, this has been happening in slow speed situations, but we are nervous about if this happens at high speed on an interstate.
edit: Back in July, I replaced both belts. Would getting wet enough cause them to slip and show these symptoms, then once dry return to normal? Perhaps I should try adjusting the belt tightness after this period of breaking in. I did tighten a tad a week or so after install.
Another related question: This car was bought used and I see no splash guards under the front bumper or on either side. Should there be?
Thanks for any input.

Hi all,
I've an 01 Galant and I'm trying to find out what's wrong with it. I hope you guys can give me some advice.
When I accelerate slowly around 40mph at 1500rpm the car starts to shake and then after 2 seconds it's back to normal.
It's like the car having a hard time to shift up one gear or something like that.
If I accelerate fast like going up to the highway it works fine.
Is that mean my transmission is going south or some electronic gone bad?
I'm not a mechanic but I read somewhere that around 40mph when the O/D kicks in?
Any help would be appreciated.
thanks

I own a 2001 Mitsubishi Galant ES 4 cyl 2.4l . I have a problem on the vehicle that truly bothers me:
Code P0420 and P0421. A year ago i had the same issue, had to change the O2 sensor after catalyst, this was done and an O.E. sensor was installed after catalyst. Also the O2 sensor before catalyst was changed but the new one is a Bosch (i recently heard bad things about those).
This being, i wanted to know what would be the course of action (I was going to purchase an O.E. sensor for BANK 1 SENSOR 1 to replace the Bosch that i have currently to see if it makes the codes go away since that particular sensor most likely went bad).
I want to thank you in advance for helping me out.
Regards!

144k miles on this little fella.
Three days ago the battery finally gave out (after a couple months of it getting increasingly more difficult to start) so we popped a new one in. Started up and idled normally in park and in drive. Drove about 10 minutes (enough time for the engine to warm up) and came to a stop and the idle dropped off and the car died. Started right back up and died again. Able to keep it going by pressing the gas and keeping RPM above about 1000. Arrived at our destination and put it in park - died again.
Got back home and started again the next morning - again idles normally in park and in drive for a few minutes until the car gets warm, then dies. Same thing - when warm it will die either in drive or park, but not when ice cold.
The only thing that's changed is the new battery. What is going on? Possible that a vacuum hose was torn while changing out the battery? Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

It's an old 97 Galant 2.0 GLS with 129K on the clock which I've had 6 years and never let me down. Apart from the faded paint, a new problem has arisen: Almost simultaneously the Cigarette Lighter AND Headlamp Washer have stopped working. I had thought there would be a fuse blown, but I can't find the fuse for either!
Anybody have any suggestions or advice?
Thanks,
Del.

I have a 2001 Galant ES Automatic problem. When the car first starts up and is put into either reverse or drive, it makes a sort of growling-esque noise. I don't know how else to describe it. But it only makes the noise in the 1000 - 1200ish RPM range. However, after the car warms up and is drivin for awhile, it stops doing it. It's gotten fluids checked and replaced recently. The only other thing I can think of, is that its been awhile since the fuel filter has been changed.
It still drives fine, speeds up and slows down fine. Shifting down into lower gears can be a little jerky once and awhile during slow speeds. I'm hoping the transmission isn't on its way out. It made it across country just fine (apart from a clogged air con hose that leaked onto the floor).
Oh, it has roughly 130k miles on it as well. I am I believe the 2nd or 3rd owner of it. But aside from those problems, it still runs fine and seems to have been taken care of.
Any ideas?

Drove with the engine light on and car seems to be running fine. After about 1 day the engine light tunred off for about 12hours now it's on again. Seems like a sensor is fault but not sure what. In the past two weeks, my car (2000 Mitsubishi Galant V6) has been making a gradual "tink - tink - tink" noise only at slow speeds and most times while I'm braking.
It isn't doing it while I'm turning, so I'm assuming it isn't the CV/bearings. I'm hoping it's just the brakes.
Now, I plan on taking this to the mechanic on Monday or Tuesday, but wouldn't mind a heads up if any of you have any thoughts!
Thanks,
Nate

Have an 01 Galant GTZ with a V6, the engine was swapped a year ago with the same size engine from a 02 Eclipse, fit right in. The tranny went kaput, got tranny from same 02 Eclipse and put in. Mech still has it as it won't shift properly, hard in 2nd and then stays in 3rd. He has checked solenoids and wiring. Got ECM from the 02 Eclipse and tried it car won't start with it plugged in. Any ideas? The old tranny is there but pump is broken. Need to get this car running ASAP.

I have a great Galant. it has almost 150k and hasnt had a single problem. Knocking on wood... lol.. We my trusty steed has finally given me a problem, I have a 5 inch crack running right along the plastic part on the top of the radiator. I had some permatex for actually the water pump from one of my other motor builds. So i figured it worked for a gasket for that why not for this. So i prepped the area really well, cleaning it of any oils and debrie. I roughed it up with some sand paper, so that it would stick.. It held for a few days but now its spraying out again.. Since i have a 2000 2.4 L galant, Wont the 2.4 L eclipse work as well? Can i go to a u pull it parts store and get one from another car? Dodge strattus?? lol
TIA...

I've got a 2000 Galant. 2 weeks ago my daughter called me and said the headlights would not come on. Parking lights are fine. I got home 2 days later checked the lights and they were fine. I thought she was imagining the problem. Well, tonight I jump in the car to run an errand and sure enough, no headlights. my first suspect was a bad relay. I checked under the hood and the relay is switching when the lights are switched from park to headlight. what I mean is I can hear and feel the relay operating. Still no lights. I went to Pep Boys before I looked at it and picked up what they told me was the relay. they gave me the wrong one. is there anything else that could cause this problem. this is only the second time it has happened. the lights did not flicker when driving and going over bumps in the road. it's as if both bulbs are burned out, but I know they are not. Any suggestions?
thanks in advance.

I have been having this problem for about 2 weeks now. In the mornings my car runs fine (2000 Mitsubishi Galant 4 cyl) and doesn't leak, but when i leave for lunch and come back, I'm dripping coolant all over the parking lot. I have had the hood open to my car on several occasions searching for some sign of where it's leaking and cannot pinpoint anywhere, except the only place it 'drips' from is the lower coolant hose, but cannot find any cracks or tears in the hose and the clamp is on tight. I had the radiator replaced a year ago and all the coolant hoses, water pump and thermostat replaced about 6 months ago. I'm thinking that it's building up pressure somewhere and my guess is the thermostat, considering all the hoses are pretty limber except for the lower coolant hose (where it leaks) which is hard as heck. Am I correct to assume a faulty thermostat?
Thanks guys!

My 2003 Galant ES smokes at idle, and low speed (under 30 mph), but does not smoke at speed (over 50 mph)
Once at highway speed, it does not smoke at steady speed, or under acceleration or deceleration.
My MIL comes on, and sets a P1400 code (Manifold Differential Pressure Sensor). I can clear the code, but it will come back, sometimes immediately, and sometimes after 30 or 40 miles.
I don't believe this code is responsible for the smoking, but I could be wrong.
I have never seen a vehicle that smokes at idle/low speed, but is fine at speed.
HELP!!

Hi Guys & Gals,
It's been a while since i've had problems with my Galant 2.4 GDi & then i remembered this ever so helpful forum...
Doe's anyone have a clue as to why the alarm goes off on a 2000 Galant 2.4 GDi when it rains? It doesn't even have to be pouring down. A fine drizzle can set it off anytime of the day or night.
Is there a way of altering it or maybe even disabling it completley?
Cheers in advance.
Pete.

So my radiator has about a 4 inch crack going across the plastic the top part of the radiator. Its 250 for a new one at advance AP. But i have 4 junk yards in walking distance from my job. I would like to see what they have. If I can get away with one that is sealed and off a lower milage car for 20 bucks. Hell thats worth it. I know that mitisu has shared parts with several different companies. What other cars can I get a radiator from. Oh and mine is a 2000 2.4L Automatic tranny.

This past Friday I heard a clattering sound coming from my engine towards the timing belt. I was going to remove the valve cover to inspect the rocker arms and valves. When I removed the coil-over-wires, I noticed oil in the #2 and #4 tubes, #1 and #3 are dry. The car feels like it is running fine; there are no oil leaks, it starts the first time, there is no stumbling when accelerating, no misfires or backfires, and no lopes when it is idling.
