I have a Mitsubishi Carisma (1.8 petrol GLSI 1997 -5 door) and the heater fan has stopped working. Although I have the workshop manual for the car it does not contain any wiring diagrams and I was hoping someone might be able to suggest where I could get hold of this information.
Failing that suggestions as to what might be the cause of the problem would be appreciated.
I have checked the following
1. Heater resistor
2. Relays on interior fuse box (both work). The top
left hand one I believe is related to the heater and
can be felt to switch when the ignition is switched on.
3. 30A heater fuse is OK
4. I have disconnected the fan and connected it to
a 12V supply. The fan worked OK
I managed to get a copy of some Gallant wiring diagrams which I belive has many similarities with the Carisma and this was helpful as the heater wiring was much the same. As everything checked out I put 12 V on the "output" side of the 30A heater fuse socket and the fan came on and its speed control worked OK so it is clear power is not getting to the heater fan from the fuse box. I have measured the voltage on the "input" side of the heater fuse socket and it is 12V when the ignition switch is in the OFF and ACC positions. When in the ON position it drops to 6.2V which I would not expect. Surprisingly this has not blown any fuses or caused any other problems - the car runs fine as long as the windows don't mist up! The wiring on the Carisma ignition switch is different from the one shown in the Gallant wiring diagram. However, the Gallant wiring diagram does show the relay coil being energised when the ignition switch is the ON position (the power for the heater comes via the 30A fuse supply, not via the ignition switch) which is almost certainly also the case for the Carisma.
Interestingly the
1. Central locking
2. Sun roof
3. Heater
4. Clock Light
are also not working and failed at about the same time as the heater fan (almost certainly at the same time but I cannot be 100% sure).
The Gallant wiring information shows the heater being fed by Fuseable Link 1 which feeds the following:
1. Door lock Relay (15A)
2. Sun roof Relay (20A)
3. Heater Relay (30A)
5. Stop light/Cruise control (15A)
4. Clock Dome Light/Lug Comp light/Radio + other things
not on car
Of these only the radio, stop light (I assume this is the brake lights - the car has no central stop light) luggage compartment light and radio are working on the car.
I guess the next thing to do is to pull out the central locking and sunroof fuses as these relays probably switch on when the ignition is turned on and a fault in these circuits may be the cause of the problem.
Any suggestions as to what is most likely to be the cause and/or where I can get Carisma wiring digrams would be much appreciated.
Thanking you in advance
Anthony

OK my first real(maybe not,hopefully) problem with my carisma 1.9 di-d 2004.
Its done 145k now nothing major gone wrong in the past, well serviced, clutch, airflow meter and usual stuff.
Now when i accelerate i can hear a rattle which you can only hear at 3000 rpm in 2nd and 3rd,it maybe there in 1st 4th and 5th but engine noise may drown it out.
this isnt a loud rattle and goes once i pass 3000rpm,sounds like a fast but quiet drum roll being played on a tin can.if i push my gear stick to one side or the other it quietens down and even stops stops sometimes but once i let the gearstick back into position it is there again.there is no rattle if car is in nutral and i rev the engine to 3000rpm,i cant hear it if i drive and open the window so im guessing something from the linkage to or in the gearbox.
i considered the cam belt tensioner but that was replaced 20k ago with the belts.
Any ideas ??

Hi,
I am considering buying a Carisma diesel as an economy run-about. I have a few questions that maybe someone can answer ?
What diesels engines have been fitted to the carisma ?
When did DiD get introduced ? year ?
Have they all been 1.9 engines ?
What BHP is expected in DiD and None DiD engines ?
What is the torque in each engine ?
What is the realistic Fuel consumption that is achieved Urban / Motorway ?
Is the engine refined ?
how reliable is the turbo ?
What is the typical Boost pressure the turbo runs on stock factory ECU?
What is the max peak injector duty cycle expected at full boost ?
Sorry about the long list but if anyone wants to know the finest details of Mitsubishi Evo 4 then I can assist here !
thanks

Been to check and a company here can turbocharge my 1.8GDI. But some people keep telling me not to. Whether its a valid reason, or they don't want me hammering the ar*e off their motors is another question, but the car has hit 100,000 miles now and im being told if i turbo it i'll end up blowing it up!?
Does anyone know if this is true? The engine has been very well looked after, and still drives spot on, without a single problem.
So anyone any ideas?

>>>>>>This may take a while to read, but please REPLY<<<<<<_______________________________________________________________________________I was looking at the supercharger websites and I was wondering if anyone who has a carisma has installed this kind of supercharger?
Does anyone know anything about these superchargers and whether they effect the performance of the motor on the long run or not?
I want to see the disadvantages and advantages of the supercharger:
(advantage of course that it is faster)
________________________________________________________________________________http://www.electricchargers.com/faq.htmThis site talks about the electric supercharger....
I emailed the electric supercharger company:(THEIR REPLY):Hi,
Yes, we do have an electric supercharger and performance chip to fit
your Mitsubishi Carisma 1999 1.6.
Your fuel efficiency should increase 2-3 MPG.
Our superchargers work on highly advanced technology new to the
industry. It works by compressing air using a centrifugal turbine. The
results are more horsepower and torque for minimal price.
Extraneous sources have tested our units in lab, and have reported
information as follows:
Air Pressure : 1.256 PSI
Air Flow : 856 CFM
Power Consumption : 765 Watts
Spooling Rate : 27500 RPM
Size : 4"x4"x4"
Customer reports have shown that vehicle has given 33-34 HP and 22-23
FT/LBS gains on
average when using our supercharger and chip.
They have been designed to do the very efficiently.
We offer a lifetime satisfaction guarantee on all of our products here
at North End Tuning. No harm will ever been done to your engine by
installing our products. If you ever have a problem with our products,
you can just send them back for a refund.
Our supercharger is such a great value because we have state of the art
technology here at North End Tuning. We offer a fair value to our
customers.
We have been in business longer than any other in industry, and our
products give the maximum power gains possible using the technology
provided.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
Regards,
Leroy - Customer Service
_______________________________________________________________________________http://www.turbonator.com/faq.htmlI also found this site that has another kind of supercharger but is not electric and of course is cheaper.
If there may be any disadvantages and effects on the performance of the motor, i expect it to be from the electric superchargers as the the second kind of superchargers is only placed in the air filter to increase the flow of air........
please let me know which one you would buy and the reason!!
thanks

I have a 1999 automatic mitsubishi carisma, 1.6.........i am facing a problem with the air conditioning in the car!
I was told that i needed to refill the gas (which i did), but it did not work...... the air is not cold.
I asked again, and i was told that the flap door that switches between hot/cold may be jammed and that it does not open all the way to the cold side!
This kind of job requires unscrewing the dash-board and removing it to get to the problem.
Anyone please,,,,,thanks

Sorry for my first post being one asking questions but I'm struggling to solve this one.
The fault is with my mums car, it has been into the garage who have read the fault codes and found nothing. The car is a P reg (1997) 1.8 Carisma. It has been a great car for the last 6 years, and always reliable until this.
Intermittantly the engine managment light will come on and it will be severely down on power, missfiring and refusing to rev. The fault goes away when the plug leads are disconnected and refitted!
The garage has tried replacing the crank sensor with no change but TBH I don't have much faith in them anyway.
They are now suggesting that it may be a coil fault, but a new one is £155 so I wanted to be sure before we go and purchace one.
Has anyone had a similar problem or have any ideas?

Hi All,
I have a 1997 Carisma, new to me, since I have had it it has failed to pick up on initial opening of the throttle.
The car also fails to pull strongly when accelerating in a high gear from lowish revs. It feels 'lumpy' as if it is missing. It will rev all the way to the red line but not smoothly.
In idle the car will go from 500 rpm to 2000 rpm without adjusting the throttle.
At times it will 'surge' as if the fourth cylinder had come in.
The car had been stood for 18 months prior to purchase and the battery was flat. We have tried the following;
Reset the ECU as per instruction from Colin on this forum (disconect battery, wait 10 mins reconnect, turn to pos 1 turn off quickly)
Cleaned the throttle body and injectors with carb cleaner.
Changed stale fuel for high octaine fuel.
Changed spark plug (subsequently inspected, seems to be equal colouration)
Any ideas? Greatfully received.
Many Thanks
James

Hi all,
I hope you guys will be able to help me out.
Last Saturday I bought a second hand Carisma 1.6GL from 1998.
I am extremely happy with the car, it drives great, looks good, etc...
However the less funny part is that I do not have any user's guide or user's manual for the car, so I have no clue where is what nor do I know about the levels for each liquid I should put (for the cooling system, etc...).
Does anyone around here would have a soft copy of it?
Many Thanks in advance,
Cheers,
Emeric

I have a 2003 1.6 Equipe (Petrol) Carisma that has had the amber warning light on even after the replacement of the 02 sensor. The same fault code keeps appearing on the diagnostics(02 sensor) and there appears to be no fault when they put the diagnostics on to check the system. The garage keeps clearing the fault code and the light sometimes stays off for a couple of days or sometimes only half an hour, has anyone else had this problem as the garage is baffled by this. The car performance is unaffected and has had all services etc and I have had the car from new. Incidentally I tend to buy petrol from Tesco mostly and live in the N West of UK..........any help or thoughts welcome

hello everyone
I was wondering if anyone could confirm whether the ECU on that car is OBD-II compatible.
I have a cable built for ISO standard using Jeff's schematic with optocouplers and pins on the the OBD-II connector of the car seem to indicate ISO support. I know dealerships use MUT-II, but I thought that manufacturers are obliged to support common standard to some extent.
I would be very thankful for any advice. maybe I need to manipulate the ignition key somehow before starting the software? the software says that the adapter is detected but the ECU is not responding.
thanks very much in advance.

Hi - I am a new member with a 2003 Carisma 1.9 DID which has suddenly developed a misting problem on the inside of a headlamp cover glass (plus indicator part) on the driver side.
I have tried to remove this by use of a hairdryer + a bulb out to act as a vent - but this was only temporary (misted up again overnight) - it seems that the water gets in (from where?) but cannot get out. The other headlamp is fine.
I have not been able to get hold of a workshop manual yet that shows how to fix this and would welcome any help.
Thanks, Rod

Hi,
After an incident with a passing motorbike I now have to fit a new drivers side door mirror to my 2001 1.6 Carisma. I had a go at taking the broken one off last night but the bolts holding it on are totaly inaccessible. Does anybody know what the best way of doing this is? Do I need a special tool to get at the bolts or nuts?

Hi
Hope someone out there can help me. I love my carisma, but. on start up throughout the winter and in warm climates the carisma 1.6 has a fast idle of 2000 then comes down when warm to norm idle. I would expect the idle to be higher on start up in the winter but surely not when ambient temp is 60 F on start up in summer.
Any help would be appreciated.

hi everyone, i didnt even know there was a forum for carisma' so im happy in a sense, but i join with bad news
i bought a 2001 Carisma 1.8 GDI Equippe. it has only 57000 on the clock. after only a few days it brought up a problem
when i start the car everything is fine. the car has low revs (900) and they bounce about a bit but nothing too serious. i can drive for 20 minutes and have no problems. however i can also go out for a run and within 5 minutes the car loses all power through the revs. the engine does not cut out but the revs drop right down and when you press on the accelerator it has very little effect. for example, if im driving along and the power cuts, i can put the car in second gear and floor it but no response will come, the car revs will very slowly climb up and there is just enough power to drive the car along at 15-20mph, but there is no acceleration or power. This is very intermittant and happens every few journeys. If the problem occurs i just switch off the engine, leave it for 30 seconds and turn it back on and it goes away for another 5 minutes then back again etc. Iv had the MAF sensor off and cleaned out, cleaned out the butterfly valve etc but still the problem occurs.
Seeing as this is my first Carisma i was hopiong you might be able to help me, maybe this is a common fault or someone has come across this before, i was going to replace the MAF sensor but wanted to ask for some opinions from those who know the cars before diong so
Any help would be greatly appreciated

hi
I just got a Carisma 1997 1.8 l GDi. And its very nice.
My question is this (and I had a search of the forum but I couldnt find a specific answer).
If the timing belt goes, is this carisma a car with an engine which is going to need major work or is the carisma a car with an engine (non-interference) that is just going to stop (and hence I assume is cheaper to fix) ?
How often is it recommended to change the belt?
(I havent collected the car yet so I cannot read the manual).
Thanks in advance
