I've checked the service manual and it's as useful as **** on a bull. I still have no idea where the bloody thing is. I've searched through all that i could reach, but unless i can properly visualise this image inside my engine bay, it's useless...

I own a 1996 (p) 1.6 carisma. I got two new lower ball joints from Jap-part as they need replacing for the MOT.
Only when I seperated the lower arm from from the suspension leg it looks like the ball joints are an intergral part of the lower arm. Am I being an **** or are the ball joints part of the arm?
Any help would be much appreciated.

I have had my Carisma for 1 month now.
It's a great car I am very pleased with it.
It has done 50,000 miles
Question 1Is there any "MUST DO / Investigate" maintenance that I should consider.....
....if so....what /why / expected cost ?
Question 2I would like to gain access behind the central Dashbord area / behind into cassette area (I have removed cassette) and also behind the knob that mechanically controls the Blower direction position (it does not change direction of air flow to feet or windscreen).
I also want to replace the broken cigarette lighter holder.
To date ........I have only located two screws behind the ashtray.
Any suggestions / picture / diagram links to help me dismantle....would be very much appreciated?
Question 3Intermittently when I am stopped at lights.......the gear slips into reverse instead of first......this is a little frustrating........any suggestions?

In Advance

i've been experiencing a few problems with the second and third gear and i think it's only because of the cold weather right now. when shifting from 1st to 2nd, and then 3rd, a lot of the time the gears would grind, but sometimes it just takes a lot of strength to shift. after about 20, 30 kms it's ok. Anything i can do to make it that smooth from the start?
there's also a problem with my reverse light. it will come on and then cut out straight away when i shift to reverse. i found that it will stay on, if i don't move the lever all the way, but if i try to drive like that, it will snap into neutral or full reverse, so either stopping or shutting the light off.
anything i can do about these problems apart from taking it to a service for new transmission fluid and reverse light switch?
thanks

My 99 GDI Carisma has electric front windows which should automatically go all the way down/up just by pressing the switch once. Each window has a two position switch - press a little to open/close a little, or press all the way to open/close all the way.
Whenever I disconnect the battery for some reason, the automatic bit stops working!
They will still go up and down, but they stop as soon as the switch is released.
Then they will start working again for no apparent reason. Right now, the driver window works properly, but the passenger one has still 'lost' the automatic feature. I know it will return, sometime, but there must be a more predictable way!
Does anyone know if there's a way to 'reset' the system once the battery has been reconnected or if there's some other thing I have to do?
Thanks in advance

Ever since i removed, cleaned and replaced my throttle body my fuel computer says that i have 0 miles until i need to fill up. Maybe i knocked a connection off but i'm not sure however any pointers would be greatly appreciated. The rest of the computery bits work o.k i.e average speed and mpg.

carlrowe@hotmail.commy first carisma a 1998 1.6 gave trouble free motoring for thousands of miles.
had the GDI a few days and it cuts out at idle when warm.
when cold it generally hunts for idle speed but hangs on in there.
i rang mitsubishi to see if the problem was the idle setting but he immediately says carbon build up in throttle housing.
i would really appreciate some assurance on this as its a lovely car but this is not a good start and depressing me. i already want to sell it!!
i dont have alot of money so new injectors/decokes at mitsubishi are out of the question.
i have read the problems with the throttle housing. is this causing the problem? the carbon build up?
i am not mechanically minded and taking this throttle body off looks a bit complecated for me.
if i get a garage to clean out this housing how long will it be before the problem could return? can any one with experience of this let me know please.
i plan to change the oil every 6 month using engine flush, use injector cleaner at these intervals also.
if doing the above -cleaning out - will mean trouble free motoring bring it on.
but how often will it keep needing a clean out?
really appreciate help with this.
regards

I have an 99 Carisma and many angry people driving behind me coz the middle breaklight is always on.
I have checked the switch by the breakpeddal but this is working fine
For now i have disconnected the middle breaklight.
The two breaklights looks to work normal when light is off
Just strange the daskboardlight also switch on when breaking.
With the normal light on the 2 at the back still work but the normal light is so much brither that this is difficult to see.
Checked all light bulbs and there are as specified
What is going on!!! Any help or ideas so much welcome, just moved and no money to go to a dealer with this

Hi,
I'm new here, so Hi !
...to the point...
My 98 Carisma has started to give me a little trouble starting over the past few weeks.
Granted, the weather has been a little colder and wetter over the past few weeks, but i dont think "its the end of the world"
The starting issue has happened 4 or 5 times in the last two weeks, but when it starts (after about 3 minutes attempting), it runs without problems.
I assume there is an eletrical part that is starting to die, but i have no idea.
Can you advise me what might be happening ?
Thanks in advance,
Meanoiano

Hi, I have a 98 Carisma GLX and have recently had electrical probs. Found a meltdown in the main loom across the car (under radiator) and fixed it but original prob of no main beam is back after a few days. got a short somewhere back to the relay. Anyone got a copy of the elctrical diagrams for the car that they can share please?? I have the workshop manual off e-bay but the elcetrical is a separate doc.

Hi,
I own a 1999 Carisma Elegance and it was factory-fitted with sat-nav. I want to update the map disc as many new roads, junctions and one-way systems have been invented since then!!!!
Anyway, do any of you guys know what model of sat-nav was put in these? I've looked in the handbook but am still none the wiser. All I have gleaned is that it is a Philips CarIn system but don't know the model number. I bought a Dayton VDO map disc which was supposed to work with the bulk of the Philips systems but it didn't with mine!!!!
HELP!!!!

Greeting to all...
Nice to become a member of this large comunity..
I have Carisma GDi 1998 and I need to replace parts in rear section of car. I don't know the exact name of part so I need help. It's something like shock silent block or anti-vibrating bar... In rear part it has 2 small and 2 large bars like that, with this rubber inside it's circle..
Can anyone tell me the part name?
Tnx,

Hi
Have a 2001 carisma 1.6 having done 46000 and good service history etc.
In the last few days, when starting it has cust out after about two seconds. It then gets more and more difficult to start. If I leave it for a while though it is usually ok.
Have replaced the spark plugs but this has not helped.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Ian

Hi everyone, My 1998 1.6 Carisma R reg Auto has been a brilliant car - regular services - no problems but the other day went to start it up, it ran for just a few seconds and immediately died. I tried a few times but ended up calling the AA who could not locate the fault so I was towed to a garage. They ran through a few options - fuses etc no luck – left it for a while, then before they went home gave it another go and it started with no problem and ran as if nothing was wrong. That was Saturday, they came into work Monday to move it out of the garage and the same problem was back. This time nothing they tried sorted the problem. They checked the timing sensors but frankly they are stabbing in the dark. I wondered if anyone has an inkling of what the problem might be. Please help, thank you.
Bri.

I have just bought a 2004 Carisma 1.9 DID.
When starting from cold the engine check light illuminates for 15 secs then goes off.
I though it could be the glow plugs not heating up.
Is there any way of bridging a test plug somewhere to get the light to flash like i could on my old Honda Accord
Any thoughs would be appreciated.

I was wondering what type of mitsubishi could we take an engine and Gearbox out of to fit in our Carisma
It is a UK RHD 1997 Carisma 1.9 GLX TD Hatchback with 139,000 miles.
The Clutch went last year and parts flew through the Gearbox. So i need a new engine and gearbox. I was considering an DI-D Unit from a newer Carisma but I dont know if it would fit.
Also the second question is, Would it be worth it in terms of reliability and performance as we wanted to use it as a workhorse.

For the 2000 Carisma GDI. It has a sensor like something on the place where windwipers have attached. In the workshop manual, it says
-Inspection
If the blower speed drops when the receiver section of the photo sensor is covered with your hand, then the photo sensor is normal. If the speed does not drop, replace the photo sensor.
What does this photo sensor ?

hi, i was saying in my last post i bought a mitsu carisma elegance 1.9,
i was supposed to pick the car up today but it will be thursday instead, the car is an english car so it has to go through the VRT get a full service and then its in for the NCT and they just did'nt have time to do it all today,
anyway as i was looking over the car again today i saw a lot of rust i dont know how i missed it the last time, its all around the engine mountings, i heard that in england ye put a lot of salt on the road during the winter and i can only assume that who ever owned the car must have lived close to the sea, the paint work is perfect and i never put the car up on a lift because i did'nt expect a 2003 car to have so much rust,
i have the car bought now so i dont know what to do its a major let down but i should have spotted it earlier
im in for a major clean up opperation and ill probably have to buy a few new brackets, nuts/bolts and mountings and god knows what else,
anyone got any good tips on how to tackle this problem,
if i can later in the week i will post a few pics,
Cheers...

There was a really useful tip in dated Nov about removing headlight, thanks Kally . Problem now is adjustment (beams are too low). Handbook says long screwdriver in slot, can't see it. Adjustment looks to be a white plastic screw thread ( 2 per headlight) all 4 seemed seized up, won't move. Any ideas?

I have a problem with my headlight washers (Carisma 1.8 -96 GLX), i.e. they don't seem to work.
I couldn't find any reference of the existence of the headlight washers from the user's manual, and I they don't wash when using the window washers.
Any idea how they work?

Hi, I bought an S reg Carisma which blew off a hose pipe due to a faulty clip, unfortunately as this empties my water out onto the motorway the car overheated and blew its gasket and fractured the head unit.
The head unit and gasket has now been replaced but the engine wont start, it sounded like a dead battery but afte charging it sounded a little better but still not turning over.
Anyone any clues as my mechanic has non, and ive been without 3 week now.

Phil

I've been having problems with my P reg Carisma. Lately I'm having to rev higher to change from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. When going from 4th to 5th I need to be travelling at about 60mph.
I keep believing it's a spark plug problem but others tell me my clutch is going, but the pedal seems normal to me.
I have no clue about cars and have only just found out where the spark plugs are (I seem to have only 2 is this normal)
I work
