So I'm tired of replacing transmissions on my '92 mitsubishi expo LRV 1.8L (4g93). So here is my question. Will any other manual transmission bolt up to a 4g93 motor like a dodge neon or something. This car is very practical for me and economical but the tranny doesn't last long. If not I'll probably go with a civic tranny and redo the bell housing to fit. Those trannys can take a beating. Any one have any suggestions?
Thanks in Advance!

According to the JPNZ Maunal for the 91-96 RVR, an automatic should only be towed with either 1) all 4 wheels on the ground or 2) front wheels on a dolly.
Is this right, surely with fronts on a dolly the center diff. is going to be wizzing round at a damaging rate? Have they translated it wrong?
If you have the book, it's on p. 138.

hi all
desperately need some help
I have a 1992 Non-Turbo Petrol RVR. I have been having a few problems with it and have put it in to be fixed. The problems with it has been: the computer (causing some kind of resisitance), header leads, cam-timing, cam belt and tensioner.
The computer issue, header leads and cam timing have been sorted but my mechanic is having a hard time in trying to find the right cam belt and tensioner. He has had a couple brought in but they did not fit.
does anyone know where I might be able to find these part in Australia. Preferably in Brisbane if possible.

Both the globes in my 94ssg compass and clock lights have blown.
Does anyone know a place in Australia where to get the globes? Im in Melbourne and I cant find a place to buy them. Been to various auto elecs, jaycar, tandy, repco, bursons. All got nothing similar.
Have been to Mitsubishi but they are very expensive ($17each) but the main problem is that they need to be ordered from Japan which will take 6 weeks or so they reckon.
Any one had to replace these before?

following jims advice i managed to get water pump off,the bolt holding lower crankshaft pulley was a bit of a bugger, there are timing marks to line it up to,one point of interest thou is mine has the 1830cc 4g93 engine fitted which was used in the lancer and some other models,it was quite a popular engine, yet when i phoned the one and only dealer here,i was informed it would take six months to get one,so im taking mine over the border to south cyprus to get one and to get a new bush put in my old one so if need arises i will have a spare one,so if any of you ever deside to tour over here bring your own spares with you as ACI HALI mitsubishi dealers dont seem to stock much.another point is if you need a manual for engine use, check to see what other models yours was used in...

Hiya,
Sorry just to wander onto the forum asking for advice and giving nothing back but I'm kind of stuck.
Mitsubishis arn't really my thing - its Alfa's that I generally work on, so I don't know a great deal about them.
I've been roped into replacing an engine in an M reg RVR after the 1st engine died. I think the bottom end may have failed after a cam belt snap but as I never heard it running I don't know.
Anyway, my mate, Adam, sourced a new engine from a breaker which I have installed using the turbo, fuel pump and gearbox off the original engine. I also replace the cam belt, balance belt and tensioners. I was able to find the cambelt replacement proceedure from an Autodate manual so I don't think its a timing issue.
After many weeks working evenings off and on (Adam's away working for 3 weeks at a time) the engine is back in and all hooked up. As I wasn't there when Adam stripped the majority of the top end off I can only say I THINK all of the fuel lines and vaccuum hoses are back in the right place.
Top and bottom of it is, the engine turns over but there is absolutely no sign of life.
I think its a fueling problem but I can't be sure. There is fuel at the pump but there is no pressure in the fuel rail to the injectors.
I disconnected the feed to one of the injectors and cranked it over. There is no pressure there, just a small dribble of fuel.
Anyone got any ideas? Please?

hello world.
Apologies for posting twice but PC crashed. my RVR has a terrible vibration at idle, below 1100 rpm. Anyone have a similar problem or is this normal?
I have been told to look at -
cambelt - stretched, jumped a sprocket or wrongly installed (timing marks out)
injector blocked on one cylinder
engine mounts broken
any ideas?
anyone got a tip on a good garage in Norwich?
Thanks
Jon

Hiya, need to know where the wire that connects to the compressor goes to..
basically my compressor works through a current test meter, and draws about 4 amps and the aircon works fine,
but when connected normally, it doesnt click in.
the fuse in the engine bay fuse box (10 amp) would randomly blow for no apparent reason, and replacing it made it work fine again, but now its not working at all.
I have found a relay that clicks on/off behind the glovebox, but the wires dont match the one on the compressor, so i dont think its that.
The wire colour thats on the compressor is black with a red stripe.
Hope someone can help.
cheers..
Mark.

Help- I'm in love with my LRV Sport AWD, but It's having what feels like an electrical problem...Engine power cuts out and I hear the clicking sound like relays resetting or something up behind the glove box, and then it goes live again...cuts out major at freeway speeds....not so much around town...Once and a while it dies totally (occasionally even in park) and will re-start in neutral or park...I read about the bad Mitzie ECU so I got a Re-built Unit and had it installed at the dealer and it DIDN't solve the problem...Whenever the electrical power cuts out, it's accompanied by the clicking sounds from the firewall area (behind the glovebox) and then the power will resume... We love this little LRV and we just recently got it, so having this problem is both upsetting and expensive...Has anyone else had this problem ??
Remember- we just replaced the ECM and it can quit either in gear (automatic) or in park......HELLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPP

Hi all
I have recently purchased a 1992 Non-turbo Mitsubishi RVR-X. After a couple of weeks everything seemed to be going ok. That is until i put it in for a service. The mechanics removed the radiator to clean it and flush it. 2 days later after getting it back I noticed a pool of coolant on the ground under the car. I took it straight back to the mechanics and they found leak in one of the hoses. I bought the car back home and let it sit in the garage overnight. I took it out today and once again there was coolant all over the ground. I looked under the car and found a drip coming from a small nozzle on the bottom of the radiator. I had noticed this before but didnt think anything of it. There is a knob just above it that I tried to tighten and got it to tighten a little bit more and it seemed to do the trick but now it is dripping again. Can anyone tell me what this little nozzle is and should it drip.
Any help would be appreciated.

A couple of months back I bought a 1994 RVR Turbo. After I had it for a few weeks I noticed that a white deposit was building up on the the battery terminals and electrolyte was seeping from the cell filler caps. As I was unsure how old the battery was replaced it.
Now several months after replacing battery the same problem has happened yet again. Could this problem be linked to a faulty alternator either overcharging or undercharging battery. Would be grateful for any help in this matter as the escaping electrolyte is starting to damage the underside of the bonnet.

I have a 97 RVR, imported from Japan.
I have been reading the other posts and have been on other sites and the problem we are having is the same as other posts. It appears that the transmission is in third gear and will not change. Other posts say that the transaxle is in safe mode. Which means the TCU is giving error codes. It also says I need OBD scanner or a multi meter to read the codes. It has also been suggested that I get the car coded so I get a readout of the errors.
My problem is that the car is in the Solomon Islands and is an import from Japan. I have just cleared it from customs and when I went to drive it away I knew something was funny. The company is reputable but since I didn't get a full mechanics check I have doubts about recourse since they are in Japan and I am in the Solomon Islands.
I can get parts from Australia if needed but I have to know which parts I need. Is there a starting point?

Symptoms;
When starting from cold, it starts 1st time & idles at around 1100rpm. After approx 2-3 minutes running, engine speed rises to around 4000rpm & will not come down...
I have no alternative but to shut down the engine at this point - after a few minutes & a restart, it will idle at around 800/900rpm & shake the fillings from my teeth - Any ideas guys ???

[B][COLOR=red][FONT=Times]Good Day, i just discovered this Forum and took the time to browse through the different posts. First off, i'm a Mitsubishi RVR owner for the past 4 or so years. Its a Mitsubishi RVR 1995 Model, Automatic Transmission 2.0L Non Turbo engine. In that time period, the Automatic Transmission broke down 3 times. Why did My parents choose the Mitsubishi rvr as their vehicle of choice while searching for a vehicle on the internet? My guess is as good as yours.
The Tell Tale signs of the Transmission problems are obvious. Occasional slipping of gears that becomes more frequent until driving is impossible. i noticed that the the transmission used to break down after long journeys across the country. Not just once but over a period of time. why? That i will explain in a bit.
I'm not an Auto Mechanic, but Common sense and research does alot.
The Problem? In my research, i've found out from a couple of webcites and RVR owners around the world, that the Automatic Gearbox made from 1993-1996 was defective. How? The Cooling Mechanism inside the Transmission didn't work/Right. Thus, the transmission fluid would not get sufficient cooling and would eventually loose value(Most fluids in Engines/Transmissions has to be changed regularly because of that). The RVR was a special case. because the Cooling was Minute, the oil would cook and cook,,,,and cook...until the value was so low that eventually the mechanisms inside the Gearbox would start going bad some faster than others..thus causing slippage of clutches etc.(i'm not familiar with all of the different parts inside the Tranny). In my case, the Transmission went bad faster. Why? I'm a motor sport entheusias. Thus, i love fast driving, coordinated driving, races etc. The RVR is Clearly NOT the suitable vehicle for all of that.
So what would happen, when i ran HARD for sometime without servicing the transmission(my fault), it would start giving problems, usually would overheat and start slipping but it would happen maybe after a long run that would get the transmission EXTRA hot. Thus i'd have to get the vehicle towed back home.
The Remedy? The first time the transmission went bad, my dad sent it overseas, got it rebuilt and it was sent back. it worked for about a year and a half then went bad again. This time after being off the road for 7 months,(source problems) i bought a used Transmission from a local used parts agent. worked like a dream for about a year den went bad AGAIN.(SIGH..)This time it stayed down for 8 Months and i used another vehicle to get around. Finally, after a long wait, a transmission repair kit i ordered came. Gave it to my Mechanic, he delayed a couple of months before fixing. I finally got the RVR a couple of Days ago. Works great. What caused the Transmission to give up this last time?
---->I had a small tear on my chassis so i took the vehicle in to a Nissan Suzuki Dealership(bad idea)..i worked there at the time. They had to take off the Engine and Transmission to weld the chassis properly(there's a bunch of novice young guys working as Techs there.). They did. after i was given delivery of the vehicle i had a whole bunch of problems. First, some wiring was done wrong so in driving when i was to DIP on the x, the vehicle would suddenly go into neutral or slip. That was fixed(mix up in wiring). Next, the engine was on a side and the heating mechanizm on the engine touched the radiator fan. i was told that i had a bad engine mount. so i payed no mind(couldn't get the mount at the time). 3 months after, on a long journey, i noticed that SUDDENLY the "A/T TEMP" warning light on the dashboard came on(my island is VERY mountainous). 10 minutes after, the transmission started slipping severly. i had to tow the vehicle back to my home(50 minutes away).
What caused the Transmission to suddenly go bad after just 3 months fresh out of the Nissan dealership?(they claimed they did not interfere with the transmission. they just took it off with the engine and placed it back) i found out TODAY after i did a journey. about 30 mins into the trip, the vehicle suddenly started smoking. i stopped, checked under the hood and saw some splatters of oil around the tranny/bottom pan area..so i just figured the oil got hot and steamed. A bit more driving and i looked in my rear view and saw a trail of smoke. I looked into my dash and there was that A/T TEMP warning light again!!!!!! What is going on!!!! Anyways i opened the hood, looked around it and guess what?? Neither of the 2 Radiator Cooling fans are spinning! BINGO! the Transmission had EVERY reason to overheat 8 months ago. I figure that was ANOTHER one of the problems from the dealership. the fans were not connected. Anyways at that point the gears were going hay-wire, so i think the ECU went into safe mode(happened to me once b4) i'm stuck in 3rd gear. I let it cool down and i finally made it home. (My mechanic should be coming a little lata to check on it)
There's my solition for now. Get the Fans fixed and flush the Transmission every couple months to keep it going. but i think i'm going to buy a Manual Transmission and end ALL of the worries. The RVR is a GREAT vehicle and i love it. Anyone who wants to buy one, they need to be aware of the Auto Transmission problem on the 1993-1996 models. Buying a Manual or even a Turbo is good. Stay away from the Auto Transmissions.
Oh...the solution to the engine being on a side? The NOVICE guys at the Dealership installed the engine mount UPSIDE DOWN 180 Degrees. so the two bolts for the engine was further forward, thus the reason the engine HAD to come forward to fit. They Rectified that problem yesterday.
I hope some of the info i gave will be meaningful to any of you guys who own RVR's and those contemplating buying.
Peace out
Shreddaz.

Hi all - I just bought an auto 1994 expo sport. 109k miles, but 30k of that was towed behing a motor home. LOVE the car - but know nothing about it. Pros and cons please. And, what should I look out for. I want to take good care of it. I got it from a one owner who changed the oil regualry, but did not have other service records. I have not owed an automatic transmission vehicle before - and that makes me a little nervous - should I be?
Thanks - Lisa

Hi there, My daughters 1991 rvr has no warning buzzer or bell thingee that sounds if she leaves the lights on and turns the car off and gets out. Does this model have this feature and if so where can I start looking for it. She has left the car a couple of times with the lights on. This would be a great help if it had one because guess who she will call in the middle of the night with a flat battery. Yeh good old dad. Hi,
Im having a poor mileage on my RVR 4G63 93 model and read that it might be the O2 sensor so I tried reading the voltage of the O2 sensor thru the pin in ECU. The reading I have is 0.91 V (warm/cold engine) which means Im running rich. I tried revving upto 4000 rpm (not running - P mode) and suddenly depress the pedal but the reading does not change.
Is my O2 sensor defective or it just my car getting rich mixture always (thus poor mileage)? If it reads rich (approx 1V), supposedly the ECU will make it leaner right? How come I still have poor mileage?
Please give me some advice.
BTW, I observe that when I drive my car for a long time without resetting the ECU (unplugging the negative terminal of the battery), the car stalls for sometime. However, if this happens, I just reset the ECU and I can run normally again.
I already changed the ff:
1. Fuel filter
2. Air filter cleaned
3. Engine oil changed
4. Spark plugs cleaned
5. ATF fluid changed
6. Re-timing the belt
7. Changed the ECU capacitors
Im using unleaded petroleum with 93 octane.

HI
Ive just attempted a replacement of a cam belt , water pump and all idlers tensioners on a 20,lt DOHC 1996 4G63 rvr without any manual ?? ( errr) , i also replaced balancer shaft belt and tensioner.
I was a bit stumped with the cam belt tensioner ? ive guessed you pretension the belt with the concentric idler /tension wheel , tighten its bolt ,then remove the pin on the tensioner ??? i couldnt quite figure how or why the 2 tensions ?
My problem is after what i thought was a carefull job i have vibration i didnt have before ? im pretty sure i aligned all marks and wheels correctly ?
It may be when i removed the engine mount and let engine down a bit it may have messed up other engine mounts ??
apart from that it goes better than ever , just vibrates more ??
Has anyone correct details for doing cambelt job and how to tension belt correctly , also balancer shaft details .
worried i will have to do it all again , cheers
