Hi there,
Hope someone can help, the clutch on my Space Star has started to slip noticeably in 2nd and 3rd gear. I do most work on cars myself but I've never needed to work on a clutch before. Does anyone know if it is just likely to need a new clutch or would it be worthwhile trying to bleed it or replace the cylinders first?
Any advice would be much appreciated, I've found this forum useful in the past particularly for cleaning the throttle body to solve an idle speed problem it had when I bought it.
Thanks, Ronnie.

Just fixed the wiper today, the aluminium part of the wiper motor body that sticks through the rear window was corroded very badly, and moisture had travelled down the shaft and the shaft seized, hence the slow speed and finally the arm stopped. I put lots of grease onto the motor shaft, also I had to rub emery paper on the shaft to free it out, and then put the lot back together again.
I am leaving this thread here to hopefully help anybody who encounters the same problem.

Hi Loz, I see you also drive a diesel space ster. Have you had any problems with the rear wiper motor, I think mine is shot, I have not take the motor out yet, maybe at the week end as work is keeping me busy. Any reply received with much thanks.

Hello ,
I own a 1.9 turbo Diesel and the rear wiper has stopped, the arm moved up the glass about 3 inches and stopped there, just want to know if anybody has had that problem, the car is coming up to 5 years old, and do you think the manufacturers warranty covers the wiper motor etc., also it seems very difficult to remove the plastic panel on the rear tailgate, door,
Thank you Galway Boy

Well my beloved "Mitzi" encountered problems, she is a 2004 SpaceStar and up tillnow has been running perfect and in many respects still was when she went in to get "fixed" XD.
A rather long exhaustitive list of wear and tear items needing replaced all came to the expensive sum of £400, luckily the main fault that she went in for in the first place was covered under warranty otherwise it be much more, the res of the faults needing replaced were found whilst it was being serviced.
I guess if you buy an expensive car you need to know that it comes wit expensive parts and labour, i still love my space star and dont intend selling, the car on the outside is near perfect and only done 20k+ miles, not bad for a 2004.
love my car to bits so glad i got it.

I posted a question a few days ago and got no replies. I sorted the problem by myself, thanks. I then looked back and there have been questions posted years ago and still no replies. I hope they got their problems fixed and did not wait too long for some help n this forum. Is it that those who frequent the forun do not know the answer or that they can't be bothered?
As I said in my post, I previously owned a Toyota Hilux Surf. The forum I used to help me was fantastic. On more than one occasion I had taken something apart and come across an unexpected problem. I would come inside, put my query on the board and have a coffee. The answer was usually posted before I finished the first cup.
I won't be using this one again as I cannot wait up to 4 years for a reply.

New member. Found the article the other day and have now lost it. The driving range has stuck at zero and I have tried to reset it by disconnecting the battery. Left it for an hour but when I reconnect, all the readings go back to the same as they were before. How long do I need to leave the battery disconnected?
I'm well impressed with my 2004 Space Star 1.9 DiD. Had a Toyota Hilux Surf before this which did about 25 mpg. Now I'm averaging about 48.

Hello!
I'm the proud owner of a Space Star 1.3 from 2002.
Unfortunately I have the bad habit of leaving things on the roof, which made me lose both a mobile phone and a bunch of keys.
Now I'm missing my remote for the central locking system - but here in DK, it's extremely expensive to buy a new one.
Does anyone know what the price would be in the UK orin other countries in the EU?
I also wonder, whether any non-original controls are available?
Kind regards from Mogens, Denmark

hi ive a space star petrol 1.3
and both passenger and driver electric windows go down but wont go back up
if they fully go down to the bottom they both try to go up and jerk as if they are trying to come up
ive checked the switches and they are ok and also the wireing
ive had both units out from the car and test them they seem ok but when put back in they do the same thing
if i put a cable tie round the top steel actuating wire and pull it side ways whilst selecting up i can get the passenger side to work everytime from bottom position
its as if i take the slack out of the wire it works ok
however tried this on the drivers side and it didnt work if i dab the drivers side switch then actuate the switch as normal then i can get it to come up
ive noticed the motor has a coil of steel wire which is wound around a pully and this leaves the motor on either side and there is a spring plunger type device on each exit through which the wire goes and only one is pulled in depending on its direction in the fault condition one will go in then straight back out again
its as if its sensing an obstuction
its doing my head in as ive had a mechanic look at it and he cant see why either
are there switches in the motor unit or is it a case of the window channels gone stiff and offering too much resistance to the motor ive tried lubricating the channels with silicone spray but its made no differance
i didnt want to undo the motor unit and have springs fly out in all directions
any help appreciated please
as im frightened to use the windows when im out and about

I found the following in another forum on this site and they definitely work for the type of fob described which my Spacestar has.
central locking remotes(not alarm remotes) can be reprogrammed very easily.
press and hold both buttons on the remote until the light stays on permanently(usually about 10seconds).
this conditions the remotes for reprogramming.
you have to do all remotes when you do this.
next turn the key on to the run position.
then press the lock button on one remote and it should flash and go out.
then do the other remote.this should resynch the remote.
turn the key off and try.
if you happen to take too long between conditioning the remotes and reprogramming the light may go out on the remote.
simply press either remote button and the light should come back on solid again.
This will occassionaly work on the alarm fobs as well but most times you need the alarm code and the bullet plug for these.
hope this helps you all
AS AN EXTRA FOOTNOTE THIS ONLY IS FOR THE COBRA KEYLESS ENTRY REMOTE WHICH CAN
BE IDENTIFIED EASILY AS A ROUND BLACK REMOTE WITH A LARGE AND SMALL GREY BUTTON.
IT WILL ALSO HAVE A RUBBER TAIL IN WHICH TO ATTACH IT TO YOUR KEYCHAIN.

Due to changing battery, the keyless entry does not function anymore.
Came across a description on how to re-register the handheld unit, but it required a diagnostic unit. But what it really said..... using the diagnostic unit, pin 1 would be leaded to ground and hence the keyless ecu would go into programming mode.
Well equipped (toolbox and a cup of coffe) I opened the panel to acess the dianostic connector, and horror strucked me......
Not one connector.....but two. As some of you know they are positioned side by side.
My question is : where is the bloomin Pin 1 ? left or right connector(lefthand steering)

I own an '02 1.6 petrol Spacestar and appear only to get around 33 mph where the add's say 39 mph.
I've owned this vehicle for around 3 months and no matter how light I'm on the accelerator i'm still only getting between 32 - 33mph.
Are the add's wrong or is there something amiss here?
Otherwise I've been pleased with the whole car

Hello all, another newbie here.
I have a 2005 plate Space Star DiD Equippe.
Last weekend while out for a drive the EMS light came on for a bit and then I got a serious loss of power in all gears.
I took it to my local garage and they diagnosed - after running diagnostic software - that problem was caused by the turbo pipe coming off. They reattached the turbo pipe and I managed two short runs in town and one short motorway drive before I got the same problems again.
On a visit to the garage today it seems that the turbo pipe had come off again despite them reattaching the pipe with a new jubilee clip. The garage suggested that it could be a problem with the wastegate, or the sensors related to the opening/closing of the wastegate.
Anyone experienced similar problems ?.
Would a Mitsu dealer be able to run more detailed diagnostic testing than the local garage to see if the problem is to do with the wastegate or the Mass Air Flow sensor ?.
Any advice would be gratefully received.

I have now fitted an after market keyless entry system to my 2003 Spacestar, and my experience may or may not help others;
The Spacestar, post 2002 Model year, only had central locking from the driver's door keylock, previous models having it from both front doors. This can be a hassle, and a keyless system is obviously a great help. The dealer solution is based on charging around £180 for a Cobra system, which is reliable, but I think the fobs are terrible. A Cobra system bought separately is about £70, sometimes less.
You DO NOT need another actuator/ motor to get the Spacestar system to work, ignore the websites that say this is the case. The Spacestar works from a door lock ECU, that requires a switch signal to earth. If it sees this, it locks or unlocks all the doors, simple as that.
All the aftermarket systems seem to use two miniature relays as their basis, one to lock, one to unlock. The system is based on two sets of three wires from these relays, using the common and normally open connections. one goes to earth, and the other goes to the appropriate wire on the back of the ECU connector, and the remaining normally closed wire is cut off. The unit requires a permanent live feed and an earth. There are usually other wires from the unit for indicator lamps, which is optional, and also global closing / boot release, which are not required / possible for the Spacestar.
There are a few kits out there including Cobra, Falcon Phaser and Rightclick. I have tried a Rightclick kit, and I think you get a reasonable unit, but with a slightly cheap fob. Doing this again, I would go for the Falcon kit for a better fob. Instructions for many kits seem minimal, and as I said before, they recommend another motor for driver's only door sytems, and that just isn't needed.
If you want any particular details, please ask via this forum.

Hi All
I have joined in forum, chiefly finding the discussions quite knowledgible, i have recently bought 2001 GDi 1.8 space star. Its done 55K and to me it looks as ok drive but previous owner told me to get a few things right:
1) Cambelt change
2) Full service (oils filters etc)
Now my friend here has advised following as well:
3) 2 Tyre changes
4) self doing the engine oil change air filter change etc
A few of the known problems are:
5) RHS front window mirror slides back 3/4th when it hits top and has to be nudged up in little 'steps' to complete the closure
6) LHS front window just gets stuck if put down fully
7) Its a little bit squeaky but yes a little bit only
8) Clutch seems ok for now but ofcourse not like the new ones
9) DIgital clock display is broken
My humble request to you all to let me know on above points about your expert opinion. Do keep in mind that my financial constraints don't allow me to spend max 250 odd. ANy other suggestions are most welcome, specially avoiding getting ripped off at the garages'

My wife recently bought a 2000 1.3 Spacestar GLX (77k miles), and there are a few questions I need advice on:
1. First gear can be difficult to engage - any known issues?
2. If the standard radio cassette is replaced with an aftermarket (Blaupunkt) unit, what info will be lost from the multi display (temp, fuel economy) on the dashboard? Is there a way around losing this info?

Just signed on site! Have a 2000 model Space star 1.8GDI. Exciting!! Well its reliable. I live in Dorset, England. Am keen to find out three things.
1. Why do the GDI/DDI engines need special oil (have just had to pay out to remedy the throttle body being clogged).
2. How do I change the instrument illumination bulbs.
3. Are there pre set holes for fitting a tow bar frame.
Anyway look forward to seeing what other Mitsy owners are up to and sharing our mechanical problems and hints!! Rob

Car is a Spacestar 1300ccm. The Lights On buzzer does not work. When we open the drivers door the inner lightning does not start. Guessed for the door switch: it is ok.
Does anyone of you has an idea where the control-module for inner lightning and light“s on warning is located?

Hi to all
I have a space star 02 1.3 petrol one of my keys have come part from the head and I got a blank key from the garage and got it cut. They told me that the one that will cut the key for me will be able to program the key. the ones that cut the key told me the key already has a code and it will have to be programed in to the car.
I would like to know if this is so and how to do it as I do not trust the garage where I got the blank key from as they f*** up my own car radio before and they said it was like that when I brough in the car and it was not.

Hi,
I'm driving a 1.9 diesel space star, 52 plate, and my engine randomly cuts out on the M4 - about 4-6 times in the last couple of months.
What happens is that the engine completely cuts out and the engine warning light comes on - i can get it started again on the hard shoulder by just sitting there and turning the key until the engine turns back on, the light then turns off also.
I took it to a dealer after the first time that it cut out who told me that it was the fuel filter, which they then replaced, and the car cut out again a week or two later

.
It seems to happen totally at random and is becoming quite tedious, any help would be much appreciated!

Hi, I brought a Mitsubishi Space Star 1.8 GDI petrol car second hand about 6 months ago. The previous owner told me about the problem, that it stalls when driving sometimes.
I noticed the car sometimes rev's eractically when stationary without me touching anything. My car often stalls braking towards traffic lights, going into round abouts or sometimes when stationary. Sometimes I can go a hole journey without 1 stall, sometimes I will stall 10-15 times. I have noticed that if I put the clutch in and whack it in neutral as I brake to a stop it very rarely stalls, and when stationary it only seems to happen when the cars in 1st gear even with the cluth in. Also having air conditioning/blowers/radio/lights on makes a difference, when I turn them on when the engine is idle the revs will drop then suddenly have a little burst.
Im no mechanic or expert but it does become a bit dangerous sometimes, It cut out at 40mph braking for a roundabout that joins a motorway and the steering goes heavy along with the brakes. Some people seem to think the timer is messed up but im not so sure it's the timer, any suggestions would be great. I don't plan on fixing it myself unless its really simple but I would like some advice so I dont get charged loads at a garage for something that won't change it.

Hi there just registered and just got a used space star (2001) last week,
the car is in pretty good condition but there is this one detail that is making me ponder my recent deal...
The engine idle speed of the car is unusually low averaging round 600 rpm and even though the engine stays up with no problem i somehow don t feel comfortable with it...
Do you know if this kind of idle speed is normal ?
If not did anybody have a similar issue ?
Anyone knows how to solve in case i d like to regulate it myself ? i looked for the usual old screw (

i know that was prehistoric times!) to regulate the gas cable but could not find it meaning that probably it is only possible to do it via electronics...
thanks for reading, much appreciate any help
Marco

We have a 1.9 spacestar did (Lamda warning light still on!) but it came with a JVC cd player so the fuel / trip meter / clock display does not work. Looking on ebay etc there are a few Mitsubishi cd players for sale which I am considering.
Is there any list or reference point to show compatability between different Mitsubishi cd players and our Spacestar?

Does anyone know if the lighter socket is wired directly to the fusebox?
I know the lighter socket is only powered when the ignition is on, but I need to add a reverse diode to bypass this so that I can add a solar panel to re-charge the battery when the car is sitting in the driveway (i.e. the power will be going into the battery instead of away from it).
The best place to do this would be in the back of the main fuse box but I dont know if the power goes Battery--Ignition--Regulator--Fuse--Socket.

We have the above car (2002 model) which we are very happy with.
We have a warning light on the dashboard which is illuminated and we therefore tooh the car to our local garage. However he is having problems as the diagnostic readout tells him that the Lamda sensor is faulty. Problem is that being a diesel it does not have one. He has tested the EGR sensor thinking that it was probablt this but it was not.
Apart from the light, the only symtom we have of something being wrong is a lack of power at low revs - a corner you would usually take in second, you have to take in first.
Does anyone have any ideas or any pointers for us? Unfortunately we are many miles away from a main dealer.
Many thanks

Right... I have installed a new battery and since then i have had problems... engine stalling etc. Yesterday the engine cut out and my yellow engine dash light was flashing and there was also an audible bleeping sound. I turned the ignition off and it started again. The acceleration was erratic as if there was a fuel issue!
Now this morning it won't start and the yellow dash light is flashing again!
Anyone have any ideas please??
Cheers, Al

Hi,
I have recently had to replace the left hand headlight bulb on a 2003 RHD 1.9 diesel Spacestar, and it is best to move the battery to give more space, although, as I found, not absolutely necessary. The thing is, the battery is held in by retaining lugs on the rear of the battery tray, and a big black plastic clip on the front side...but how does this work? It has an invitingly large handle area at the front, which you would assume needs to be either pulled upwards or pushed down, to effect a cam lock onto the battery, but with reasonable amount of force, nothing happens? Anyone know what to do here, before I break something?
Also, I am looking at adding remote keyless entry to the manual, driver door only system the car has already. My local dealer fits a Cobra system, but I do not like the fobs. Anyone fitted an Rightclick system ( rclick.co.uk ) to the Spacestar? It looks like the Spacestar uses temporary switching to earth from operation of the internal door switch or the driver key barrel switch, which then instructs the ECU to fire the door actuators, and therefore, it should be possible to use any kit that utilises miniaturised relays with normaly closed / open and common terminals. However, most of the aftermarket kits seem to require another actuator for a driver door only system. Is this right? I'm not sure it is, but I wouldn't mind a second opinion!
Thanks for any help.

I have just found a possible fault with my dads new space star, you cant put the passenger side window down using the switch for the electric window on the passenger side you can only do it up. The driver is the only one that can put the window down using the controls for the windows on the drivers side. Is this normal or not.
Thanks
