hi there this is my first post and by the looks of things the first of many.
Recently brought a 95 mivec fto and after the 6mile drive home the car now wont start.
Firstly i noticed one of the belts and been chewed in half but down the length of the belt so it hasnt actually snapped. Next i noticed the pully wheel this belt was on was buckeld and wasn't running true. I think its the power steering belt that has gone. The pulley is the top most forward one is this the ccrankshaft pulley wheel.
Next is noticed there ws a sensor wire that had been catching on the same belt and had worn through to the bear metal.
the mpi fuse had blown could this sensor wire of caused this?
after all of this basically i wont to know if the engine now fubared or if i get the above repaired will it be ok.

Hey, do any of you guys know where in the UK i can get a cambelt changed? I've asked about but no one can do it because it's an import. I'd do it myself but i dont have the room at the moment and i'm not likely to for some time.

Hi Guys ! and gals
Its my 1st time here, so let me just hi to every1
guess I have been lucky in some sense, that my car has never given me any real trouble whatsoever in the two years I have owned her.
That was until about 3 weeks back. she is a 94reg fto gr import
It started one evening after I had come back from shopping in Newcastle, Id dropped my friend off only to find my car would not start at all.
Got a lift home, my brother had a look at the car for me the next day, said it started 1st time, he said he couldnt find owt wrong with it, barr the alternator belt seeming a little loose.
Well anyway ! I took it to work the next day, it started for me fine no problems running, only I finished work, got into my car only to find it wouldnt start, all the lights came on an such.
But when you turn the key, nothing.....???
This has happend quite a few times now, it seems to start the 1st two or three times, with no problem. But then it wont start at all, but the wired thing is that after 3 or 4 or 5 hours it will start........!!!
Thats the confusing bit for me, I dont know a hell of a lot bout cars, But Im thinking it cant be the battery as if left long enough it starts fine. Like today for example, I havent used the car for bout two weeks, cause im afraid it wont start, and havent had time to get it sorted. But it started 1st time
Please guys !
Any advice...........

This is my first FTO so clearly my first post in here so let me just take a minute to say hi to everyone, i have read a few posts and there seems to be some knowledgeable people here,............right.......i bought my 2.0 v6 24v ralliart just 2 days ago, everything was fine when i picked it up, although on the way home i did kind if notice the battery light kind of flickering upon revving but i just ignored this as it was running fine....anyway the next morning i went out to it and it was dead, completely no life, no lights nothing!! got my grandad to come help me by jump start and after a while it had life again so off i went, then 5 mins later in mcdonalds drive through it died! (embarrassing!) my friend came in his skoda lol and gave me a jump start and off it went, fired up straight away, so anyway i have jumped started it a couple of times now and it always starts it, now.....yesterday i jumped it off my boss's van and away it went. We stood talking as it was running and it just cut out, we started it again and it started straight away, i drove it down the road and parked back up outside the house, turned it off and tried to start it again but nothing, the dash lights come on but all i get is a load of clicking!? at first i thought starter motor?? but as soon as i jump start it, it starts so surely starter is ruled out?! am i being a bit thick and not realising its just the battery needs replacing?? any help would be greatly appreciated, many thanks in advance.

Hey all,
Have a Mitsubishi 4 speed tiptronic. Thing is it shifts fine in manual tip mode but when I have it in full auto is shift like its a somewhat confused.
From first to second it changes then goes into a false neutral then changes to second.
So take off in first during the shift to second it goes into neutral but revs drop say 1000rpms (WTF would cause this) and then engage second gear.
In tip mode it does not do it, and gear shifts are fine. Oil is still red and does not have a burning smell.
Anyone help?

What I am wanting to know is what are some things to look out for with these cars. Tips on finding a good one. And how to tell a lemon.

Hi I have just bought my very first mitsi as a bit of a project hopefully not a too costly one. I bought a 1995 FTO gr, the chap that owned it before me wasn't very technically minded an somehow connected the battery with the polarity reversed, never realised and tried to start the car. Since then the car has been laid up...until i saw it covered in moss from the road. I am pretty certain that I have checked all the fuses on the car and fitted a new battery, when i turn the key to its first position all the lights come on as I would expect, radio works etc however when i attempt to start the car it will turn over but not fire. I have had the spark plugs out of the car and checked to see whether they are infact sparking when the car is turned over but they don't seem to be. Further to this I have tried going to a few local garages wih a view to booking it in for work but as it is an import no one seems to want to know. YOu all seem quite knowledgeable from reading through previous pots and topics so any ideas, information or just a general push in a direction go next would be muchly appreciated.

I have recently bought my first FTO, the lad first said it was a GR model but then when i picked the car up he said it was a GX model, i would be very grateful if anyone could tell me if there is any way of finding out exactly what model my fto is, i.e. from the vin number or something, any help/info would be much appreciated.

Hey I have been working on a project for about a year now and i have a mitsubishi fto mivic ralliart engine in a mitsubishi colt so basiccly i havbe put all the fto fittings in to a 1996 colt
i have the wireing loom for the car custom made cost over £1000 to desighn and make
and the car has worked grate untill recently not sure whats happening
i had a new cam belt fitted and discoverd i needed a new oil fed shocker as well so as u can imagen it was a very expensive and costly process
but after this was done the car was under reving at only about 500 when in first gear so as u can imagen the car was dieing when i slowed down and put it in to first gear so at first i thought it was the idle as you would normally imagen just needed turned up but now it has started to missfire badly when driving along and the engine warning light has come on. i know for a fact the engine its self is fine as before we put the cambelt on all the cylinders were fine and ive alredy checked this out and the engine is fine so it has to be a electrical fault im asumeing my thoughts are the map sensor any one else any ideas
the car still starts up and under revs but when i try and drive it miss fires and as u can imagen the car jurkes around. i can not plug the ethos machine in iit to diagnose it as sadly the guy who re wired the car for me didnt tell me were the plug in was and i cant find it

i would really appreceate any help at all. My guess is its electrical and im looking towards the map sensor any one else got any thoughts

Hi All,
I'm new to this forum and new to FTO's.
I recently bought a 2000 model Mitsy FTO Mivec. The other day the front light started flickering from dim to bright and eventually stopped on dim. I thought it was a faulty bulb, so i bought a new one, fitted it and the same thing happened. I took it to an electrician and they told me its the lights 'volt controller box', located behind each light.
Does this make sense to anyone? I done some research but all i could find that sounded similiar was a Xenon HID Ballast, is that what i need? Does anyone have a part number or know where i can source this part?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as i am a bit stuck. I live in Cyprus and qualified electricians are hard to come by.

Have just stumbled across this forum, and am hoping for some good advice from fellow Mitsu Owners. I have had this problem for a few years now and now and again dust off the Tech Manuals and try to find and fix the issue and to date have had no joy....... hopefully some good advice will come from this post
My PJ is a 1995 FTO GR, D38A (V type 6 cylinder DOHC 24 valve same as 97 gallant)I have owned her from the day she was Imported from Japan to Ireland 8 years ago now, (now living in UK) about 6 years ago I have a problem with the car not starting and had the CAS changed when I got the car back the Tacho was not working.
The following is what has been done to date:
Inspection procedure 54-15 (no codes from ECU(OK), all wiring checks at gauges to +/- and ecu and sensors (OK) the Tacho feed says it should be 5v and am only getting 4.6v (??) ... outcome says change Tacho which I did and ....still not working.......
IFS (Ignition failure sensor) Change ....still not working.......
ECU SWAP ....still not working.......
I have a UNI-T Auto Meter which has 6cyl rpm signal test but can’t get any signal from the ECU signal wire, speed connection wire or the IFS or engine speed connector......

Hi,
My F.T.O wont start up. I have changed the fuel pump,the fuel filter and changed the spark plugs also.The spark plugs are firing but no petrol is going in to the engine,please help as i am running out of ideas as to what he problem can be.Thank-You.

Hi everyone im new to the forum and ive invested in a 1994 fto gr, needs a little work as its been standing in a warehouse so the back brakes are none exsistant and the exhaust is in very much need of a replacement (complete system) ive sourced a gpx but the answer i need desperatly is WILL THE EXHAUST SYSTEM OFF A GPX FIT STRAIGHT ONTO A GR? they are both jap imports and i think the same year also, need to know as i will be taking it off later, many many thanks

Going from 4th to 5th gear is a bit jumpy, and also dont seem to pull much when in 5th gear? I want to do a oil change, got the filter I just don't know what oil to put in it!!! Any help with this would be great...

Hi,
just recently bought an fto with the tiptronic box, the problem is that when i go to start it all the lights come on and nothing, but as i have noticed when i take the hand brake off and it is in park it starts, so could this be because the park bit on the box is jolting the starter to start? will i need a new one?

Hello,
I want to make a conversion of a rhd Mitsubishi fto to lhd. Yes, I know your reactions: It will be expensive ...dont do it...buy rather a new lhd car...But I'll do it.
I know that I need to buy a new steering rack(or turn it 180' the old one), , make new wiring, change postions of the pedals, change position of some parts in the car, make a new firewall...
But the main problem is the dash...Do I need to make it on my own? Can I make some adjustments with the current dash, it's simmetric the left side and the right side... Can I find a dash who is very similar(or the same) as the dash of the fto from anoter mitsubishi model? maybe a 3000gt or eclipse?
I have a very good team in plan for doing that conversion, an expert mecchanic who has done some conversion of other cars in past, an excellent electrician and my uncle is a expert in welding.
It's very interesting that I didn't find any information on the internet regarding the conversion of the fto...It's there some problem in the fto that doesn't allow doing the conversion?
That's the part of the informations I had collected from various forums on the topic : RHD to LHD conversion.

hi guy s new to the site. hope all is well. allow me to tell you mystory. last month swapped my mk1 gti golf convertable. for an fto and had nothing but trouble from day one. the gearbox was knackered so i bit the bullet and had it replaced managed to find one locally. but it was a gpx not a gr so after some research found that this should not be a problem as long as the inner joints are changed as they ate 27 splines on a gpx and only 25 on a gr. box went in no bother. but think this box might be worst than the last one only get couple hundred meters along the rd and jumps in to safe mode. has to be restarted then does exactley the same. i have had it working in all gears but for a very short time. treid resetting ecu but no joy. any help would be greatley appreciated. need a good dignostic guy in scotland. please help as i really dont want to piss another 600 bucks of hard earned money away. cheers bob

I hope you guys can give me some advice. There's no earth between the ignition switch and starter. The ignition switch and starter are both fine. At the moment I'm hot wiring the FTO to get it started. Could it be the inhibitor switch causing the problem or just a broken earth wire. If so, where do I start to look? Tiggi

Hi Guys.
I'm new to these forums and have just bought an fto Gr tiptronic. I'm so happy with the car and was suprised how fast it was for its age. Anyway I had a problem the other day...I had been out in the car for about 45 minutes and i noticed when i was in first gear of the 4 i lost power. The engine revs wildly like it should but the power isnt transmitted to the wheels or the drive shaft as it may be. i dont know alot about how the drive train works in automatics, but a friend mentioned something about it possibly being the torque converter, if this is a friction clutch then i suppose it would make sense. Would it be expensive?
I have also experienced the key occasionally getting stuck in the ignition but thanks to another post i think i'll be able to fix it.
After leaving the lights on my car the other day the engine started squeeking, i thought this might of been the fan belt straining due to the extra load on the alternator but again im not very familiar with cars engines so im not sure.
Finally, my fto has the multi changer in the armrest but the internals that hold the cd's isnt present. Would anybody be able to help me locate one?

Hi, i have bought a Gizzmo Electronic DSII shift light (a tachometer without the dial) and a simple three wire installation or so i thought.
the 12V Ign was easy as was the earth and the only other one was the tachometer signal from the engine ECU on the passengers side of my FTO GR. when i connect the wire to the tacho signal from the ECU, the stock tacho cuts out and the aftermarket tacho does not function correctly, this is only temporary as the stock tacho begins to work again after disconnecting the other wire.
anyone had anything similiar? any suggestions?

Hi, gearbox works fine in both modes for a few miles and then jumps into 3rd, it will not change wether in d or tiptronic. Goes into reverse without any problems.
When the ignition is turned off it resets and works normally for a very short while.
This only started happening after not using the car for about 3 wks and the battery went flat...
Anyone got any ideas....thanks for any help in advance...Mark

Hi there,
When I bought my FTO last year the passenger sill had some rusting at the back.
I would like to get this fixed/replaced (see attached picture)
Has anyone had this done themselves?
How much did it cost and does anyone know of a place in Scotland (preferably Edinburgh) that I could get this work done?
Also there is some rusting on the underside of the car which I may have looked at while I am doing this. Does anyone have experiences they can share of bodywork done to their FTO. The cost involved and advice?

Every year the Mitsubishi Plant in Normal, IL puts on an event called MOD (Mitsubishi Owners Day) as known as Back to Normal. (See flyer for more info)
This year my inside source has told me that the Mitsubishi Plant is possibly going to be having a Galant FTO on display... hence why I'm here!!
I want to reach out to all of you FTO owner's that live close enough, and or just want to takw a good road trip and come out and join all of us this year at MOD. The turn out is as always amazing with all kinds of Mitsu's to see and vendors.
They section off the cars so all the same line is together. They even break down all the eclipses/ talons into the different generations. Lancer has seperate from the Evos even!
AMS will be there. Buschur too I think (last year they couldn't make it).
Free food. Tours of the plant. Tshirts you can buy, and so much more! I hope to see some of you out there!

hi all first post but very urgent .
il tell it like it happened
went to pull up outside my house and engine died power steering went and dials/insturments died ,lights stayed on and stereo stayed on went to start up again and nothing just struggling tried jump starting with another car still nothing left for 5 mins tried again and it started . went to reverse died again, got out went to leave car till weekend when its light , pressed alarm fob windows and mirrors never closed up(they do normally, full closure fitted) but doors locked so i unlocked it started again was fine turned off and alarmed again everything shut up like normal. so i guess i got an alarm fault well hoping thats it anyway.
i have a clifford concept G5 with all bells and whistles . have been reading about the internal battery failing if not chirps but mine still chirps. can anyone shed some light as i dont want to go round a round about and loose power again and end up in a railling somewhere.

Hi all, hoping i can get some answers.
My 1995 fto gpx has decided that it wants to stay in 3rd gear.
I started the car and the tiptronic gearbox switched straight to 3rd gear with the neutral light flashing.
If i put it into drive the box clonks in and then drives fine. Put it in reverse and it does the same.
Ive tried a few tricks offered by others like starting it in neutral etc but nothin has worked.
Any ideas???

I HAVE A 1994 FTO 2.0 V6 TIPTRONIC GR
THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE CAR WONT START OR TICK OVER FROM COLD AND CAN TAKE UP TO 20 MINS TO START ITS NOT THE STEEPER MOTOR THAT CONTROLS THE COLD IDLE THE CAR WONT START AT ALL , ITS FINE ONCE ITS STARTED AND WARM. THE ONLY WAY I CAN START THE CAR QUICK IS TO LEAVE THE BATTERY OFF OVER NIGHT WHICH MUST BE RE-SETTING THE ECU AND CLEARING THE FAULT CODES
NEW ECU NEEDED ?????????? ANY IDEAS?????????????????????????

hello u all guys ,having problems with my fto gr here in greece.car stopped suddently send to the garage & mecanic says petrol pump failing.ok i found one putit back& now petrol s ok but still not starting !!electronic man says power not goin to the sparks,maybe alarm,maybe ecu !hi newer see bef FTO none here soo one,tu complicated says !hi needs wiring diagram .its a FTO M reg GR tiptronic and its a lovely one !got 19 inches alloys whith tyres 295/30/19.girls here asking wend we going for a ride heeelppppp !!!!

My 1995 manual FTO wont start, I can clutch start it, but when i turn the key there is no clicking or cranking sound from the engine, the lights work fine, I got a jump start (well tried) and it still would not start even though the battery level showed 14 volts!
why wont my car start?

(N) flashing after (3)gear 3500_4000 rpm,been ok before,just started after changing oil on gearbox(to be onest didnt put very expensive one,a simple autom transm oil,might bee that the problem ?anyone helppp

Hello All,
I just bought a bargain, manual MIVEC FTO, the last owner had a new engine fitted but i never ran right, After soe light investigation i found two loose spark plugs at the front.
That solved the running problem, but my next job is quit a loud knock coming from the rear suspsension, has anyone got any clues or ideas as to what the cause might be.
The only other niggle is the tacho has stopped working. After reading other posts i have just gone out to re-set the ECU and will have a look for any sensors while i wait.

hey guys
i was just wondering if u guys can help me cure my problem,
when ever i release thr throtle after 3 rpm theres a rattling sound near the engine bay, its not the exhaust
any ideas

I got my fto about two months ago ( ive attached some pics below hope they work) and has been driving like a dream,
But as i live in a city/ town in the south west there are a loads of speed bumps, and have started to hear a concerning squeek from my front suspention.
a) Is there anything i can do to stop this?/ stop the damage ...

Hi
I have just bought an FTO Mivec. This is my second FTO which I am planning to modify.

Have already ordered HKS SF5 Lowering springs and now looking for nice wheels. I want deep dish look and have found some 18 inches wheels. Not sure if they will fit my car. They are 18 X 9.5 JJ with 114.3 Diameter fitted with 235/40/18 tyres. On the previous one I have tried 17X8J and they were way inside the wheel arches. Just not sure if these wheels will stay inside the front wheel arches or come out as it will not be road legal if they will be to big to be covered by the front arches. The current ET is 43 so I will need to put 5 MM spaces to reduce it to 38. Any one tried anything like this? any ideas / suggestion guys?
