Hi can any body suggest a engine oil that will help with one or two noisy hydraulic tappets only noisy on start up from cold for 5-10 mins until engine very warm ( but not every time ) would a engine flush help with this mater and a good oil but what grade of oil ?
Fto now not starting hi can any body help when driving along 20mph-80mph my fto loses power and stalls (as if it runs out of petrol),most times it does not restart straight away after about 5 minutes it will restart but will do the same again further down the road now heres the odd thing the fault goes away and starts again days later can any body help have now replaced fuel pump ,fuel realy , fuel filtter and stepper motor, also had a code read no faults showing
Today driving great pulled up on driveway still running great turned car off then tried to restart 30 sec's latter and now won't start at all ? checked for spark which it has ,turns over great, no fuel (pump does not seem to prime or run) for some reason so put 12v direct from the battery to the fuel pump ,car then starts but but only keeps running if the ignition is held over stops as soon as you let the key return. hope someone can help
Well if all goes well I should be able to get my hands on a 1996 FTO gpx.
Anyway I would like to know the best way to go about getting the exhaust to get out the best of all sound. If possible can I get vids of proof of the best sounds. I done heaps of you tube but still would like some more stiles of sounds.
Hey all i just removed my cylinder head to find the culprit of an oil leak and found the gasket seal was not complte (someoneused gasket sealant rather than an actual gasket) which should be used (gasket sealant (tube like) or that hard cardboard like stuff)?

WENT OUT LAST WEEKEND IN IT AND IT DROVE BRILLIANT...
ON SATURDAY I DID A JOURNEY OF ABOUT 50 MILES PULLED UP TO A HALT AT SOME TRAFFIC LIGHTS AND IT DIED!!! AND KEPT DOING THIS EVERY TIME I STOPPED OR NEARLY STOPPED AND HAS DEVELOPED WHAT SOUNDS LIKE EXTREMELY NOISY TAPPET ON STARTUP AND THROUGHOUT ALL REV RANGES,, IT SOUNDS AWFUL...
DONT HAVE A CLUE HOW THIS HAPPENED.... IS IT POSSIBLE FOR THE TAPPETS TO JUST START MAJOR RATTLING/KNOCKING... I DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT FTO ENGINES BUT I KNOW THE TAPPETS CAN BE ADJUSTED ON THE MIVEC....SHOULD I TRY THAT FIRST OR COULD IT BE SOMETHING MORE SERIOUS??
Im new to the forum as i have recntly become the proud owner of a 95 gpx!! I love the car to bits but just got one problem i need some advice on. What oil should be used in the engine?? Cos when its cold its quiet no tappet noise but when it warms up there is tappet noise there. It doesnt lose any power or run any differently. Could i use a better oil to help sort this problem????
hi guys , just bought a tiptronic mitshi . car will sometimes start fine , other times it will start and die out if i let it tick over , however , at high revs , car will continue to run. a real mystery to me this , any good advice out there ? cheers.
guess I have been lucky in some sense, that my car has never given me any real trouble whatsoever in the two years I have owned her. That was until about 3 weeks back. she is a 94reg fto gr import
It started one evening after I had come back from shopping in Newcastle, Id dropped my friend off only to find my car would not start at all. Got a lift home, my brother had a look at the car for me the next day, said it started 1st time, he said he couldnt find owt wrong with it, barr the alternator belt seeming a little loose. Well anyway ! I took it to work the next day, it started for me fine no problems running, only I finished work, got into my car only to find it wouldnt start, all the lights came on an such. But when you turn the key, nothing.....??? This has happend quite a few times now, it seems to start the 1st two or three times, with no problem. But then it wont start at all, but the wired thing is that after 3 or 4 or 5 hours it will start........!!!
Thats the confusing bit for me, I dont know a hell of a lot bout cars, But Im thinking it cant be the battery as if left long enough it starts fine. Like today for example, I havent used the car for bout two weeks, cause im afraid it wont start, and havent had time to get it sorted. But it started 1st time
Hi I have just bought my very first mitsi as a bit of a project hopefully not a too costly one. I bought a 1995 FTO gr, the chap that owned it before me wasn't very technically minded an somehow connected the battery with the polarity reversed, never realised and tried to start the car. Since then the car has been laid up...until i saw it covered in moss from the road. I am pretty certain that I have checked all the fuses on the car and fitted a new battery, when i turn the key to its first position all the lights come on as I would expect, radio works etc however when i attempt to start the car it will turn over but not fire. I have had the spark plugs out of the car and checked to see whether they are infact sparking when the car is turned over but they don't seem to be. Further to this I have tried going to a few local garages wih a view to booking it in for work but as it is an import no one seems to want to know. YOu all seem quite knowledgeable from reading through previous pots and topics so any ideas, information or just a general push in a direction go next would be muchly appreciated.
I have recently bought my first FTO, the lad first said it was a GR model but then when i picked the car up he said it was a GX model, i would be very grateful if anyone could tell me if there is any way of finding out exactly what model my fto is, i.e. from the vin number or something, any help/info would be much appreciated.
Hey I have been working on a project for about a year now and i have a mitsubishi fto mivic ralliart engine in a mitsubishi colt so basiccly i havbe put all the fto fittings in to a 1996 colt i have the wireing loom for the car custom made cost over £1000 to desighn and make and the car has worked grate untill recently not sure whats happening i had a new cam belt fitted and discoverd i needed a new oil fed shocker as well so as u can imagen it was a very expensive and costly process but after this was done the car was under reving at only about 500 when in first gear so as u can imagen the car was dieing when i slowed down and put it in to first gear so at first i thought it was the idle as you would normally imagen just needed turned up but now it has started to missfire badly when driving along and the engine warning light has come on. i know for a fact the engine its self is fine as before we put the cambelt on all the cylinders were fine and ive alredy checked this out and the engine is fine so it has to be a electrical fault im asumeing my thoughts are the map sensor any one else any ideas
the car still starts up and under revs but when i try and drive it miss fires and as u can imagen the car jurkes around. i can not plug the ethos machine in iit to diagnose it as sadly the guy who re wired the car for me didnt tell me were the plug in was and i cant find it
i would really appreceate any help at all. My guess is its electrical and im looking towards the map sensor any one else got any thoughts
I recently bought a 2000 model Mitsy FTO Mivec. The other day the front light started flickering from dim to bright and eventually stopped on dim. I thought it was a faulty bulb, so i bought a new one, fitted it and the same thing happened. I took it to an electrician and they told me its the lights 'volt controller box', located behind each light.
Does this make sense to anyone? I done some research but all i could find that sounded similiar was a Xenon HID Ballast, is that what i need? Does anyone have a part number or know where i can source this part?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as i am a bit stuck. I live in Cyprus and qualified electricians are hard to come by.
Hi, My F.T.O wont start up. I have changed the fuel pump,the fuel filter and changed the spark plugs also.The spark plugs are firing but no petrol is going in to the engine,please help as i am running out of ideas as to what he problem can be.Thank-You.
Hi everyone im new to the forum and ive invested in a 1994 fto gr, needs a little work as its been standing in a warehouse so the back brakes are none exsistant and the exhaust is in very much need of a replacement (complete system) ive sourced a gpx but the answer i need desperatly is WILL THE EXHAUST SYSTEM OFF A GPX FIT STRAIGHT ONTO A GR? they are both jap imports and i think the same year also, need to know as i will be taking it off later, many many thanks
Going from 4th to 5th gear is a bit jumpy, and also dont seem to pull much when in 5th gear? I want to do a oil change, got the filter I just don't know what oil to put in it!!! Any help with this would be great...
just recently bought an fto with the tiptronic box, the problem is that when i go to start it all the lights come on and nothing, but as i have noticed when i take the hand brake off and it is in park it starts, so could this be because the park bit on the box is jolting the starter to start? will i need a new one?
Hello, I want to make a conversion of a rhd Mitsubishi fto to lhd. Yes, I know your reactions: It will be expensive ...dont do it...buy rather a new lhd car...But I'll do it.
I know that I need to buy a new steering rack(or turn it 180' the old one), , make new wiring, change postions of the pedals, change position of some parts in the car, make a new firewall... But the main problem is the dash...Do I need to make it on my own? Can I make some adjustments with the current dash, it's simmetric the left side and the right side... Can I find a dash who is very similar(or the same) as the dash of the fto from anoter mitsubishi model? maybe a 3000gt or eclipse?
I have a very good team in plan for doing that conversion, an expert mecchanic who has done some conversion of other cars in past, an excellent electrician and my uncle is a expert in welding.
It's very interesting that I didn't find any information on the internet regarding the conversion of the fto...It's there some problem in the fto that doesn't allow doing the conversion? I hope you guys can give me some advice. There's no earth between the ignition switch and starter. The ignition switch and starter are both fine. At the moment I'm hot wiring the FTO to get it started. Could it be the inhibitor switch causing the problem or just a broken earth wire. If so, where do I start to look? Tiggi
I'm new to these forums and have just bought an fto Gr tiptronic. I'm so happy with the car and was suprised how fast it was for its age. Anyway I had a problem the other day...I had been out in the car for about 45 minutes and i noticed when i was in first gear of the 4 i lost power. The engine revs wildly like it should but the power isnt transmitted to the wheels or the drive shaft as it may be. i dont know alot about how the drive train works in automatics, but a friend mentioned something about it possibly being the torque converter, if this is a friction clutch then i suppose it would make sense. Would it be expensive?
I have also experienced the key occasionally getting stuck in the ignition but thanks to another post i think i'll be able to fix it.
After leaving the lights on my car the other day the engine started squeeking, i thought this might of been the fan belt straining due to the extra load on the alternator but again im not very familiar with cars engines so im not sure.
Finally, my fto has the multi changer in the armrest but the internals that hold the cd's isnt present. Would anybody be able to help me locate one?

Hi, i have bought a Gizzmo Electronic DSII shift light (a tachometer without the dial) and a simple three wire installation or so i thought. the 12V Ign was easy as was the earth and the only other one was the tachometer signal from the engine ECU on the passengers side of my FTO GR. when i connect the wire to the tacho signal from the ECU, the stock tacho cuts out and the aftermarket tacho does not function correctly, this is only temporary as the stock tacho begins to work again after disconnecting the other wire.
Hi, gearbox works fine in both modes for a few miles and then jumps into 3rd, it will not change wether in d or tiptronic. Goes into reverse without any problems. When the ignition is turned off it resets and works normally for a very short while. This only started happening after not using the car for about 3 wks and the battery went flat... Anyone got any ideas....thanks for any help in advance...Mark
Hi there, When I bought my FTO last year the passenger sill had some rusting at the back. I would like to get this fixed/replaced (see attached picture)
Has anyone had this done themselves? How much did it cost and does anyone know of a place in Scotland (preferably Edinburgh) that I could get this work done?
Also there is some rusting on the underside of the car which I may have looked at while I am doing this. Does anyone have experiences they can share of bodywork done to their FTO. The cost involved and advice?
i have recently had a new water pump fitted, but when i put the cam belt back on and start it up it seems fine, but when the cam belt covers get put back on it seems to be rubbing on the cover. You need a special tool to adjust the tension wheel but i used 2 small allen keys, which seem to work fine, i have done this several times but the belt just seems to work its way loose and the tension wheel seems to move. can anybody tell me where i am going wrong??????
Hi all, new to this so could be interesting, I have an fto gr which I love although since i had my stero taken out the other week to have my dash re painted ive noticed a squeek under the bonnet!!!!! it kinda sounded like a fan belt or sommin but now its got worse
you start the car and it sounds a little like a transit van and then it squeeks big style although if you put your foot down a bit it kinda stops any ideas????
also ive just read on the net that if you put your foot down and it takes a while for kick down and then goes you may need a gear box rebuild???
