A quick tip for anyone trying to fix a p0456 DTC on an 02 Lancer. I found a cracked check valve attached to the top rear of the gas tank. I was able to remove the check valve without having to drop the fuel tank by loosening the 2 bolts that hold up the front of the tank and removing the 3 bolts from the rear, then by using a mirror I was able remove the check valve. It was cracked at the point where it attaches to the tank. First confirm that the leak is there by removing the 2 bottom hoses on the front of the EVAP canister, plug the larger hose and blow into the smaller hose, you should hear the leak above the gas tank. Exopy work fine to plug the crack on the check valve.

Purchased a 2007 Lancer for my son and daughter to drive. Hoping to teach son/daughter some car car and maintenance as well. Dealer parts dept. in columbus oh says the factory service manual is not available. Is this the case or is there just no profit in it for the dealer. I know from past cars I have had that the factory manuals are expensive, but very detailed and accurate. My hope was that the factory manual would include nice general descriptions of the different groups to help in understanding how they are supposed to work. I did purchase an e-bay manual that was labeled as being for 2007 to 2009 but indeed it was for the 8th generation model beginning with 2008, excellent manual maybe one of the best I have ever seen. Hoping to find the proper 2007 if it exists or do you just use the 2006 knowing little if anything changed for the 2007 year model. Any suggested sources or should I just watch ebay? Thanks for any replys!!

OK so I dug out a copy of the 2002 Lancer Manual. I assume everyone would like to have access to it. So if someone would like to let me know who to send it to so they can post it up here I would appriciate it. I attached it but not sure if it will work.

Because existing sources of auto reliability information left much to be desired, in late 2005 I started conducting my own reliability research at
TrueDelta.com. TrueDelta reports absolute stats like "trips to the shop" that make the differences between cars much clearer. Results are updated four times a year, so any significant changes in a model's reliability become apparent quickly.
We're already reporting a result for the 2008, but haven't enough owners signed up for earlier years.
Participants simply report repairs the month after they occur on a one-page survey. When there are no repairs, they simply report an approximate odometer reading four times a year, at the end of each quarter.
To encourage participation, panel members receive full access to the results for free.
For the details, and to sign up to help out:

just wanted to know if anyone has tried to convert their OZ rally to AWD and replace the rear drum brakes for disk? I know it will be pretty expensive and I might as well just go with an EVO but I wanted to make a more unique ride that no one has. If you could please give me some links to parts I would need and a detailed description on how to do that would be great. The ralliart has rear disk brake, could I just order the same ones and put it on my OZ? As far as the AWD what would I have to strip off an EVO? Thanks for the help.

I want to check the level of transmission fluid in my 1994 Lancer. The operator's manual says "the transmission fluid filler port cap is equipped with a dipstick", but I am unsure where to locate this port cap. The diagram in the operator's manual seems to imply it is located next to, and at the height of, the battery, but this doesn't make sense in my car, so I assume the drawing is inaccurate.
Any help much appreciated.

Alright, so im thinking of getting an 03 lancer OZ lancer rally edition for my first car, but ive got a couple concerns that i was hoping someone could help me with. Mainly my concern is is this car gonna last? Is it reliable, its not going to fall apart on me or anything will it? the car has 66000 miles on it and ive seen it once. I didnt notice any major cosmetic defects but all i need to know is that this is a reliable car. is there anyone out there who can help?

I have a 03 lancer oz rally, I'm not sure what oil to use being this is my first Mitsubishi car. In the past I have used Mobil 1 with my civic. Also do you recommend 5w30 or 10w30? it has about 84,000 mileage. Much help is appreciated.

Hello, I own a 2004 Lancer SOHC 2.0 Liter.
The first time I had an issue the car was running and driving normal. All of a sudden the car died. Almost like it stalled out. Didnt want to start back up. Finally it started up and drove for a little and died again.
The car than drove and had no issues, eventually one morning it didnt want to start. After pulling it in checking for spark and fuel, replaced spark plugs, and IAC.
It was very unpredictable since once in a while it would start fine and act as if there was no issue.
I than got a hold of a friends scan tool and pulled a crankshaft possition sensor code. After clearing it and trying to run it, it than pulled both cam and crankshaft sensor codes.
I replaced the timing belt since I felt something was off either with the mechanical or electrical timing. I took the sensor out and cleaned it and added dialectric grease on the magnets of the crankshaft sensor. Also replaced both alternator and a/c(powersteering) belts and the waterpump. The car ran great for about a week. Now both codes are back.
Im now going to order a crankshaft sensor and install it. In the mean time I was currious to see if anyone else has had the same issue. On other forums mechanics thought it would be more so the crankshaft sensor, any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Ok, I bought my 02 Lancer LS not to long ago, and have never driven it at night, until the other night (usually always drive my durango). And I noticed that there are no Radio lights, so I cant see the buttons, or the backlight of the display. I can see the display if I turn on the dome light. Also my heater/ac knobs and controls dont light up. And the PRND12 does not light up next to the gear shift (not sure if this is suppose to in this car, because it doesnt in my Stratus R/T). Should all of these be lit up? And if so where can I get the bulbs so I can replace them. Everything in that section works, just no lights. Im not able to find anything at the local parts store. Thanks

Hi everyone, I'm new on here.
Months ago, i drove over something that looked like rubber, but it was metal, and it ripped the bumper valance off the back of my 04 sportback ralliart lancer, destroying it in the process, to replace this part from mitsubishi is $650 which i cannot afford and no wrecker on the planet has one. Does anyone know if there is some aftermarket company somewhere that might make this part? or does anyone know of a ralliart sportback parts car somewhere that may have this piece available?
i'm desperate as I am trying to sell this car.

I have a 2005 Lancer ES and i don't have any problem with the factory sound system or head unit. So, that being said in the spirit of saving money is there anything out there that i can buy or something to hook up to my factory radio to give me a line-in? I would like to hook up my psp to it. possibly a din converter? anyway hopefully i get the answers im looking for. Thanks in advance!

i just installed a new fuel pump and the car starts up nice but in a few seconds with the stick in neutral it starts to do a very rough idle and coughing and then chokes out and dies. what could be doing this.
Can someone point me in the right direction please:
285,023 miles
new sparks, gaped at .44
new spark boots, but no new coils
new alternator
new fuel pump, does the NEW fuel pump come with a built in filter, i could only get a new strainer for it?
new clutch
new timing belt
new water pump
new A/C
replaced middle catalytic converter and O2 sensors and front exhaust manifold one year ago
thank yall

I am he proud owner of a 2.4 mivec CH lancer, already installed is a cat back exhaust. I've been looking at fitting an aftermarket suspension to it for a while, with a strut bar, bigger rear sway bar and either lowering springs or coilovers.
The only thing i ask is: is it worth it? will there be a noticeable difference to handling should i spend all this money? and should i get coilovers ($1200 i can get them for) or lowering springs (considering i'll prob need new shocks if i go that way)?
Thanks.

I know this is a common problem with my year, Mitsubishi will not recall it as they do not consider it a safety issue. they also said they would charge me between $300-$1000 to fix it >.<
It was not a big issue for me during the summer, but with winter coming and colder mornings already, I'm dyin for some damn heat!
What I would like to know is, how can I bypass the switch and just manually open/shut the valve or door which controls the hot /cold, as I cannot afford to spend a lot of money to have it fixed right now, but don't want to freeze my butt of because of it.
I know a Honda I had some years ago, the valve was under the hood and could easily be closed to allow the heater to work.
Is there something like this on the Lancer and where can I find it?
Thanks guys!

Backstory goes like this: My 2003 Lancer ES, manual stick shift, just came back from an auto body repair shop on an insurance claim because during a very rainy storm a tree hit the car on the passenger side taking out the passenger side mirror (that is electric) and bashing in the front window on the passenger side and took out the wiper motor, or at least the wipers don't move anymore. Got the car back this last tuesday and everything was working great,......for one whole day though. The problem is now i cant start the car. i was coming off the highway down the ramp and went over a cattle guard like usual but this time the car bogged down a little right after i went over the cattle guard and i thought i was going to loose the engine so i just threw the car into neutral from fourth gear then into third gear and it kept running normal. Then i head down for about 2 more miles and i come to a stop light, turn right go from first gear to second to third and that is when i bogged down again but this time it just kept acting like it was starving for something so i naturally just gave it more gas which just made the car die like it got no more fuel or something.
I checked for spark with a screwdriver which my son didn't like too much because he got shocked
Pulled timing belt cover off to check timing and it is verified to be in good position
Checked reusable air filter not clogged, no humming birds jammed up in there
fuses checked out good by pulling them and visually inspecting them
Don't know how to check the relays, the completely black block looking thing with four prongs, i could feel them thud when i had my son turn the key to "ON"
Miles on car are highway miles if that matters at all: total is 285,023....that 23rd mile must be the killer
Me and My friend/mechanic changed the following items this june: Timing belt, water pump, new A/C compressor, clutch
Last year i changed the front exhaust manifold, middle catalytic converter, two O2 sensor
oil changed every month because i put about 4 thousand miles on it a month.
This week a new fuel pump that i thought would fix my problem but it didn't....
Can someone help me out and point me in the right direction to figuring this out. thank you,
PROBLEM sort of solved, in another post found a third FUSE box and the wire harness was hanging out and not plugged in....so now i have power to my new fuel pump but now lancer runs for only a few seconds and then sputters out when in neutral.....

I have a 2002 Lancer ES with about 135K miles on it.
Two codes were shown on the On Board Diagnostic System that prevented the car to be fully tested. P0421 and P0135. I have looked these up, but I am confused as to what both really mean. The check engine light has been on for a while, but until now, emissions wasn't even an issue.
Any help would be appreciated. I live in VA, so you have to get emissions every two years and I left the state I was living in before I needed emissions.
Thanks.

ok heres the code i got when i got my engine scanned: PO421.
The guy there said its my cat not warming up quick enough because im not using a high enough octane gas. but for a while i was using premium and it was still there quite often but would go off every once in a blue moon.
Now heres what the ticket says:
The PCM has determined that the warm up catalyst efficiency for bank 1 is below threshold for the current engine operatin condition. (Bank 1 identifies the location of cylinder #1, while bank 2 identifies the cylinders on the opposite bank)
Code:PO421
Definition: Catalyst efficiency low-bank 1
Explanation: The oxygen sensors monitor the catalytic converters ability to store oxygen.
Probable Causes:
1. Catalytic Converter defective (Failure possibly due to #2, 3, 4)
2. Engine misfire or running condition.
3. Large vacuum leak
4. Engine oil leakage into exhaust- vavle guide seals, piston rings.
My dad is suggesting to just buy a new o2 sensor and c what happens. if i do that should i just go and buy an air/fuel gauge so i can see how my engine is running.
Or should i just go and buy a new "honeycomb" as the tech. put it which would cost like 300 or so bux. then he advised to just go to a muffler shop and get them to put on a universal one that would just be like 100 or so bux.
N e suggestions would be very much appriciated. Thank you.

So i recently went on a road trip in which i had to drive up a huge steep mountain. My car was performing fine before this, but ever since i got back on sunday, whenever the car shifts from first to second gear, it kicks. It doesnt happen fron second to third, or third to fourth. I was told by a good friend that i could be running low on transmission fluid, but i checked the levels, and they are fine. If anyone out there would be able to help me with this problem, i would appreciate it.
Just for reference, i drive an automatic 2002 Lancer OZ Rally...4 cylinder 2.0L SOHC

Hi all. I drive a 1993 lancer mx which i think has been retro fitted with a 4D68. definatly a diesel up front any way.
The problem i have at the moment is that the battery light and the (i think) fuel filter light (orange, looks like a v bottomed tank with a drip from the lowest point) are glowing. whats confusing me is that they both came on at the same time (while driving at around 80kmh) and they will occasionaly both turn off, or flicker simultaneously at mid to high revs. that says to me that its not the alternator and fuel filter failing at the same time, but something else. Anyone got any ideas? the battery doesnt seem to be loosing charge, and I took a sample from the filter and found no obvious water contamination.
cheers all,
diesellancer

I own 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer Oz Rally edition, standard transmission with 99K. I know my timing belt is due for a change and I am getting it done ASAP as it wasn't changed earlier.
Now that I am about to shell out 500-700 for timing belt change, what else should I get replaced with the timing belt?
Or in other words, what else should be changed with timing belt to run my car hasselfree for some time.

Hi,
I have an automatic 2002 lancer Es. It has 110000 miles. I noticed that I have to add 1 bottle of oil (1l) every 900 miles (from full to empty). With my commute it is around every two-weeks or so. I talked to the dealer and they said it was normal for a Mitsubishi engine... Really !!!???
Also there is a huge dark spot on my bumper (my car is white...) just above the exhaust system. I would think it is related to the car burning oil.
Someone told me about an additive from bardahl I could use to reduce oil consumption.
Oh and there is no oil spot under the car where I park.
Please advise !
Thanks

Hey all. New guy here. Been having issues with my '05 Lancer OZ lately because of the heat wave we have been having here in Seattle. The car decides that when I'm stuck in traffic on a hot day, it wants to jump the idle RPM to about 2500 when I have it out of gear and my foot on the break. I noticed it doing it first a couple of months ago on a HOT day, and not when the weather is cooler. I asked my brother that's a mechanic and neither 1 of us knows why it only happens at that particular occasion.
I checked all the vacume hoses and the throttle linkage and everything appears fine. I don't drive the car hard and I think it's in great shape for having 70,000 miles.
Can anyone solve the mystery of the "Heat High Idle?"

I just replaced my timing belt for my 02Lancer ES . Not the belt that connects to my alternator. but the belt that connects to my ac compressor and power stearing. All Went Well my car is running good but there is a clicking noise I hear, it could be my ac compressor because I need a new one. I'm pretty sure my belt tension is fine . has anyone ran into this clicking problem while changing their belt?

I have a 1992 1.3L lancer, the one out look similar to EVO 3 but it not. It have a CB1 engine in it.
In singapore there is a life spend on the car for every 10 year we have to pay something like a COE for it. And my car is about 20 year for another 1 an half year to go. I wonder if it worth to keep the car, as most of my friend told me it not worth it because of rust. Some even tell me at the end of the last year drop an EVO 3 engine in, becasue no need to change anything it will just sit in nicely. To be horest, i don't really like most of the car nowsaday, yes it big, it have a lot of figure, but most of them are under power, and auto car, unless i go for a bigger size car like 2.0L.
I wonder have anyone try turbo charge this engine, i know a 1.3L stock engine turbo charge also unless, but just wonder how to get a bit more without damaging the engine.
Thank you.

i was driving back to my house and wasnt speeding or doing anything stupid and i was about 500 feet from a stop sign, put the clutch in and took it outa gear to coast, all the sudden my dash light up and my car died, my battery is fine, i do regular maintenence, havent been having problems.
once i rolled to a stop and parked i tried to start it again and it just kept cranking but not turning on, i tried a compression start and when i tried to put it in gear it made a whining and grinding noise, no loose wires that i could see, at 3:00am....

got a half a tank of gas...
i have no clue what it could be, if anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated, or just give me a list of things i can check to see if they r broken.

Ok, so I get in to program mode by connecting pin 1 and 4 with a paper clip and pressing the hazard button 6 times. The doors lock and unlock...
But then nothing I do with the remote works. And I made sure the battery in it is new. I'm pretty sure pressing "lock" 3 times is supposed to register the remote.
Anybody have any suggestions?

Hi guys, I have a '04 Lancer OZ Rally, 2.0L engine. It has about 95k miles and no, I have not changed the timing belt yet, I realize I'm long overdue but I dont think it is related to this problem..
I bought a set of Denso Iridium spark plugs IK16 and carefully replaced the worn spark plugs while having the battery's - disconnected. After re-connecting everything and turning the car on, it was far below the 1,000 RPM and the engine sounded like it was about to shut off. Thinking the plugs were somehow bad, I put the old spark plugs back in but it still did the same thing.
I took it for a test drive and the engine kept vibrating severely, the acceleration is also very odd as it fluctuates constantly. Then, the Service Engine Soon sign came on. I slowly made it back home (luckily) while the car vibrated insanely.
Is there a cheap and easy way to find what code the SES/CEL is throwing?
I'm going to take the spark plug wires off again tomorrow and try stretching the springs inside the coil.. I feel like it is grounding with the engine instead of touching the spark plug tip correctly.
Any help will be much appreciated, thank you in advance.

Hi I own a 2002 Lancer LS..approaching 140k. I recently had my catalytic converter replaced as the engine light had been on for several months. So far so good..it has not come back on. However, I still have an issue with a rotten egg type smells coming from the car..and sometimes a rich fuel type smell out the exhaust. In addition to my concern, after the vehicle idles for a short time, when I give it gas or rev the engine, I get a puff of smoke out the tailpipe. It has a rich smell to it, and is a grayish white. I don't see any oil in my coolant, or coolant in my oil vice versa. Any thoughts? thanks for your help.
