Ok, I know that on here there is at least one person who had a lot of
experience with these cars so I am hoping someone will be able to help. My
wifes Spacewagon is a 2000(W) fitted with the awful GDI engine and has
covered 96K. Over the last six months it has been getting harder to keep
the engine running smoothly. It stalls at lights, won't idle unless the
revs are kept up and runs rich. I put the car into a garage near me for a
diagnostic but all this found was that the front O2 sensor (lambda) was
out of spec, and "spiking".

He did say the plugs were a bit ropy, and offered to change them at £25
each! When we got the car back I changed the oil, filters and this week
replaced the sensor. The car is gradually getting worse and now will only
idle once in a blue moon.

As the car is now 12 years old and we no longer need a 7 seater I am very
reluctant to spend serious money on it. I have ordered a new set of plugs
and will change them but I am not convinced they are the sole cause of the
rough running. I have in the past given the intake manifold a spray of
Ecotech Powerboost, which removes the "varnish" which these cars tend to
suffer from, but I doubt if this will help.

Any thoughts welcome!

Hi,

i actually got one having very similar symptom, a 1998 n94w, i pluged in to the diag tool and only reads sometimes with a fuel pressure code 56 when it wanna stall.
Then i did a compression test and turns out one of the cylinder actually got no compression whatsoever, which likely to be a valves stuck open, hence not firing in a good way, which makes it stall.. cause? possibly a lash got jammed ? i am still working on it at the moment ...maybe yours could be the same or similar? did you do compression test? Plugs wise i actually tried cheapy copper cores one and the NGK iridium one, both not doing anything better..

I have not been able to find a diagnostic tool that works with this car (I have an ELM327), but I have given a it a shot of Powerboost and that made things a lot better. I suspect the throttle body and intake/valves/injectors are well gummed up and that is causing the problems. We have now decided the car must go!

ELM327 will not read early imports, nor a snap on machine will either. Coding is different on Japs. and it uses 2 ports at the same time to read the obd 1 and 2 at the same time.

Gumming up - resolved by disconnecting the breathing pipe from block to inlet, replace with breathing filters.
I am in the process having the cylinder head off for a recon. Its a great car - only when its all working good
