One of the three most asked questions on this forums relates to the 4WD operation and what the flashing dash lights mean. I have pinned this topic and attached a link which describes the system quite well (including pics).
If you are having trouble with your system or just want to know what is the correct operation is vs incorrect have a look at this before searching or starting a new thread.
http://4wd.blogeasy.com/article.view.run?articleID=318776Jim
PS: The top questions are;
1/ I want to find a service manual for my vehicle?
2/ I need a radio code for my vehicle
3/ What do the flashing 4wd lights mean?
If you could help with the first two I will sicky them to the top. Our Russian link seems to have gone AWAL.

Hi all,
Recently, we have had a thread going on replacement of O2 sensors. This is a hot topic during these times of increased fuel prices and understanding complicated engine management systems. The O2 sensor is an essential part of the engine control and can fail without having any fault codes come to our attention.
It will become increasinlly important that we know how to test & diagnois a faulty sensor and then replace with the correct part. This may sound easy but as this attached thread points out there are different types of sensors now available and the parts code listed can be wrong. It was also discovered that certain after market brands perform better than others so this is another trap for those uninformed. Going OEM is not always the best option as it can cost over $1200US to replace sensors which may still be functioning.,
http://www.mitsubishi-forums.com/t38645-an...gen-sensors.htmI know that this attached thread link is long and difficult to follow. It is my intension in pinning this new thread to develop a good comphrensive place to document test methods, available replacements and problems we have encountered with the sensors. If you have some information which would be of use to all of us in this thread please post it up.
I will attach a link below that describes how sensors work and basic test procedures for a start. Do note that this article is a little out-dated and technology has advanced. Just one of the recent pitfalls I discovered.

I have a 1991 Mitsubishi Montero. It's in great condition. It had the motor replaced at about 150,000 miles, now has about 189,000 miles on the truck and around 39,000 on the motor. I purchased it about a month ago and drove it around 80 miles home. I then took it on a weekend trip of about 200 miles or so. It has demonstrated some electrical problems with the windows (back right window must be rolled up from back right door panel instead of master panel, sometimes windows short circuit and will not roll down or up). About a week after I got back from the weekend trip it sputtered and died on the way home so I ended up pushing it the last block or so.
I replaced the fuel filter hoping that was the issue. It wasn't, so I replaced the fuel pump and have put HEET in the tank to dissolve any water that might be there. It's still doing it. I can start it up and drive it for a few blocks then it sputters and dies again. It acts like getting warmed up is fouling something. I can put it in park in my driveway and rev it up forever but when I take it out it sputters and dies.
After it dies, it won't start back up for several hours (but it does start back up). I've heard it might be my distributor coil (whatever that is). I don't have any idea how vehicles work honestly. I'm competent enough to take parts off, put parts on, and diagnose a great many issues as I've driven a lot of beaters in my day, but I'm trying to keep this as a decent reliable vehicle.
I'm losing my mind here trying to figure out what's going on (and spending a fortune on parts). So any help is SO greatly appreciated.

Ok I recently got my Montero and unlike every other vehicle out there, the forums are very lacking for this vehicle. There are not as much active members or resources for the 2001-2006 USA Montero (NOT MONTERO SPORT).
As you see a few topics down I inquired/searched on info on car audio. There really was no info at all. I am very familiar in the stock Infinity amp wiring with Mitsubishi's since the harness has not changed since 95. And after consulting the service manual I was correct.
So I started changing the speakers first. I found out that the doors have 6.5" speakers. Easy enough.
It is a task removing the door panels if you care about not breaking any of those clips. Consider yourself lucky if you manage to remove the door panel without any of the clips breaking.
Removal of the door panels reveal something like this
[attachment=11297:montyspeak08.jpg]
I'm not going too crazy with the stereo system, something simple on a budget.
The speakers don't mount directly on the door, but are attached on this which is attached to the door
[attachment=11290:montyspeak01.jpg]
Simple enough, at least I had thought..
I go to replace my speaker and this is the outcome
[attachment=11289:montyspeak00.jpg]
You can see the stock infinity speaker is actually a little oversized. I tried 3 different brands of aftermarket speakers labeled as 6.5" and their mounting points were no where close. I wish i had an 8" woofer to see if it would directly bolt on, which would be nice for the components up front.
I did not want to build an adapter since I did not have the tools to do so. They sold adapters specifically for these cases but were ~$15+ for a pair. So we would be needing 2 pairs.
So after looking this is what I came up with.
[attachment=11292:montyspeak02.jpg]
With a small flat head, you will need to pry out the speaker from the surround as so.
You will then end up with this..
[attachment=11291:montyspeak03.jpg]
Then with a dremel/rotary tool, you will want to shave down those tabs until it is flat.
[attachment=11293:montyspeak04.jpg]
Above I left one tab to show you how you need to make it flat like the rest I already did.
Now if you want a stock like install, here you see I soldered the positive and negative wire that will connect to the aftermarket speaker terminals.
[attachment=11294:montyspeak05.jpg]
The positive is on the clip side, meaning it is on the side where you press the clip to release it. This goes for all the door speakers
Next I just got some black RTV and applied a generous amount around like so
[attachment=11295:montyspeak06.jpg]
Let is dry. This is so when you press the speaker in it will seal all the air holes/pockets/etc.
[attachment=11296:montyspeak07.jpg]
What is happening is the aftermarket speaker is sandwiched in-between the plastic surround from the old speaker and the metal housing. After you screw it down, you are now ready to install it back on the car and plug in the stock harness like so..
[attachment=11298:montyspeak09.jpg]
NOTE, the front door speakers do not utilize the metal plate like the rear doors.
You can see that here
[attachment=11299:montyspeak10.jpg]
So it is sandwiched directly with the door. Still the same process, but you just have to be careful when aligning it.

I thought some of you may benefit from seeing one of the possibilities of installing a double DIN receiver. I installed a Pioneer AVIC-F7010BT. Although I didn't take any pics during the install. there were only two simple mods needed.
First, to relocate the vent controls, a hole was drilled in the metal side mount (just like orig. position) to allow the temp control cable access to the new location. that was all.
Second,
check for yourself (i can't remember), the back two support pins (ones that hold up the back of the orig. radio) were cut off to allow the new stereo to slide all the way back. I used the orig. stereo brackets and the ones from the lower storage tray (4 total) to mount 8 screws in front using the orig. holes. Using the orig. brackets the new stereo
does have support in the back (I believe in 2 or 4 places, but maybe only the bottom 2).
Sorry I cant recall the second part. It was just so easy that I didn't pay that much attention.
There is a similer thread here:
another vent relocation threadOther additions:
- New 4ga powercable from battery and split under center console to 8ga (one for each amp).
- Alpine pdx 2/1ch sub amp under passenger seat. these fit great under the seats just had to make my own carpet stops so the wouldn't slide
- Alpine pdx 4ch amp for other speakers under driver
- new wires to all speakers (hardest part of the project was feeding wires to the door through the small rubber weather guard. soapy water helps alot)
- 10" sub and custom box. yes it's not pretty, but all cuts were made freehand with a cir saw. designed on google scetch-up.
- sound proof entire truck
I'll post new pics when (not if. I like to tinker) I take the dash off.

Found pictures, they do exist.
but now where to buy them..

here are the LED tail lights

here are some regular euro altezza style lights

I would certainly be interested in the BLACK HOUSING projector halos, I did not like the change after the 02s with the chrome housing. Also I like the style of the 02 tails with the color matched trim, they already look aftermarket, but the LEDs would be smooth.
I could not find any place to buy these, at least in the USA. Usually you find these on ebay, but with the lack of aftermarket already for the Montero, distributors prob. don't even bother stocking these. Such a shame.
If anyone knows where to get the BLACK projector halos, please post.
Now I'm curious as how these are wired and what bulbs come with them.
Most if not all aftermarket projector halos these days come with their own bulbs supplied. Usually its the h3/h4 combo. I'm sure most know with our Monteros we only have 1 bulb for high beam low beam. That would mean that other projector socket in the picture is solely for show. I have HIDs in the stock bulb size, so I would need to know so it installs in the socket of those projectors.

HI. I have a 1990 Pajero, 4D56 diesel. I have a fan clutch that is slipping due to age. This then causes my engine to start overheating above 3000RPM in 5th gear. When i drop it back down to 2950rpm, it's fine, the engine starts to cool down.
Does anyone know where I can get one of the older assemblies that were locked and didn't rely on heat to activate the clutch? My mechanic and I have thought of welding and older assembly, but the fear of imbalance and throwing the clutch assembly out at high speeds is too great. plus being aluminum, makes it difficult to weld.
The last option is to remove the engine driven fan and use an auxiliary electric fan. Being here in Kenya, makes it most difficult to get parts at fair prices. Whenever I go back to Manila, that is where i load up on parts, since they are so cheap there.
Any ideas? Thanks

I have an 87 Montero 4WD 2.6 L 4 cylinder...as part of the air conditioning system, the vehicle has an auxiliary fan in front of the condensor. The wire to the fan motor is not connected to any power. I'm working with a Haynes Service Manual, which has a wiring diagram for the air con system and a chapter for the air con system, but neither indicate an auxiliary fan in front of the condensor. Can anyone tell me ....is the wire for the fan motor connected in some way to the power for the compressor or does it have a separate connector? Are they joined together or do they receive power separately?

In the past few weeks my Montero has started idling way to high. I've checked my IAC and it is working just fine, swaped it out with another just to check. I've had worries about my ECU, had momentary power outages having to be reset by pulling my starter cable ad letting the truck reset.
Anyone have any other ideas on what it may be? I've been though this truck a thousand times and I'm very familiar with everything in it.
Any ideas please post a reply, it could be the smallest thing and I could have missed it.

Hey all, I'm new to this forum.
I recently ordered the OEM 2 inch lift kit for my 2001 Montero XLS. Now that its gonna be riding a little taller I need new tires to fill in the gap and get a mean look. I have 265/70-16 on the truck right now. I want to buy new 16" rims but want a far more meatier tire.
Any help in a larger tire size would be great. I just don't know how big I can go.

I have a 1996 Montero (3.5) my IAC went bad (erratic, bouncy, low idle)...I bought a new one and replaced it. It now idles way too high (2k-2.5k rpm).
When I replaced it I cleaned out the throttle body and disconnected the battery for about a minute to reset the system.
I've run it for a day now, when cold it idles around 1500 (almost double what it should be), but when it's warmed up it is around 2300 rpm...
Anyone have experience with IAC replacement like this?
How long does the neg. battery terminal need to be disconnected to reset the computer? Should I just let it run longer, how long does it take time for the montero reset/relearn the idle speed?
Any help and direction would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Montero Ltd. The in-car readout of the outside temperature has gone to --- and will not display the temperature. Does anyone know where the the outside temperaturesensor is? Could it be this simple? Other factors - The display at the top of the center stack will no longer cycle to the graphic of where the in-cabin airflow is (when the dial is set to AUTO for temperature control) Is there any control box or electronics for this under the shift selector? My wife spilled coffee there once, other than that, I can't think of anything else that has happened. Any advice to point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hey there, oil change is almost due. Will be the first one since being the new owner. Didn't find any thread regarding this task so here it is.
Previous owner, from his receipts, has always put synthetic oil.
I like to do my own oil changes and it seems fairly easy to access the drain plug and the filter.
Doesn't look like the previous owner went to Mitsu to change the oil. Went to a generic shop and used a generic filter. Haven't noticed any ill effects after driving 3000+miles.
What filter and oil brand/weight do you guys recommend/use?
Manual says 5W-30 IIRC. Coincidentally enough I will be changing another SUV's oil which uses 10w-30. So I have in my possession both weights, both fully synthetic.

Hello folks, and good day to you all.
i'm new to these cars, having just decided to replace my 20 year-old land rover 110 with a 1997 Shogun GLS TD.
Two questions to start with, and I do apologise for them in advance, but my mechanical abilities are, well, poor to say the least.
1. What is the recommended oil for the engine (both brand name and a 'supermarket' alternative if possible please!)?
and
2. What is the largest tyres / rims I can fit without any other amendments (eg spacers etc)?
and (sod it, I've thought of another question!)
3. Any good tyre/wheel suppliers?
Thanks in advance!

Hi all,
Has anyone ever had the misfortune of breaking the Automatic antenna plastic feeler that pushes and retracts the antenna? I know this is a very rare incident, so you either replace the whole unit or install a new in-cab window antenna.
Anyways, I have bought a used automatic antenna for a song and am about to go replace the whole unit or open up and replace the feeler only.
The biggest question is, has anyone ever opened up the side panel (left front) to get to the antenna? What are the risks involved here?
Thanks.

Our Montero just starting leaking oil from the rear of the motor. I took it to the shop and they said that it was a seal for the camshaft. I have only worked on older model muscle car type engines before, but what they said did not make sense. I would think the cam shafts should be installed from the front and that is there the seal should be, not the rear of the heads.
What else could be leaking in the back of the heads? They said it was not the head gasket or valve cover gasket, so I am at a loss. Thanks,
David

Hi, all
I found on the net following web site
www.elcats.ru ,
www.japancats.ru. Russian web site for catalogue for every car. Some models details are fully visible but for mitsubishi pajero which i'm searched for its requires user registration at site. Its checks with VIN number or you can search for with model details. I think its highly usable for someone who is looking for part numbers and details with images. Actually if you get all parts info you can also search for price but its in russian currency only.
If someone found itis usable please say thank you for me. and if dont understand in russian dont forget to use

Any one have a manual with step by step procedure for diagnostics, may be i can return the favour one day.
I have plugged my code reader in and unfortunately it wont read, only vehicles after 2004 have to be eobd compliant.

Hello, new to this site but hoping to get some valuable info here. My first problem is that my starter motor is starting to go in my 92 Pajero LWB. I am desperately seeking an original part number without pulling my own starter to look as it is my only vehicle. Can anyone help me out with that? I am asking as Pajeros are not native to Canada and I imported it from Japan. I can get a starter from any importer but they won't tell me where it comes from and what the brand is. I have a miracle worker of a parts guy that can cross reference anything and has found me a north american eqivilent but I can't be certain until I get an OEM starter number. My truck is a 92 Pajero with the intercooled 2.5 TD on a V44 Chassis, manual tranny.
Thanks so much

Recently my Mitusbishi Pajero IO (same as Montero IO) has started vibrating at low RPM. The engine shakes and you can feel it in the vehicle.
Can anyone assist?

01 Montero overheating @ idle. On my BMW this is indicative of a faulty fan clutch. Is it the same for my montero?

hi all,
i recently have had cooolant dripping from beneath my manual transmission , not much but enough to notice.
i have searched the site and found similar problems relating to orings in the water pump that fail and the coolant runs down the valley and hence onwards to the transmission where it drips to the ground.
i have had the cooling system pressure tested at 15 pounds and nothing happened, but after 45 mins or so a small amount of fluid(coolant ) was visible .but the mechanic was unsure of the actual place it was coming from due to the position of the timing guard,but assumes it could be the pump.
as i accept this as the fault i am curious as to whether 93, 3.0 v6 petrol nh glx pajero's have 4 welsh plugs or is there a 5th one at the rear of the motor that is only accessable when gearbox or motor is removed.
i do have a manual but it doesnt state how many there are only images of 2 either side of the power plant .
so does anyone know how many welsh plugs these models have ??
regards gibson

Recently i used my 4wd in high range and as i was driving there was a sound coming from under the car like a grinding noise but not rough, like something was grinding but softly, there was no notable diference in the acceleration or braking engine was acting normal, as i went faster the noise got louder.
I cheked everything under the car and there wasnt anything rubbing against anything i could see, may I add that when I engage 4wd only the Wheel Lock light comes on, and the light which depicts the four wheels doesnt light up, i can feel the 4wd on but as i was going up a muddy hill, somebody next to it pointed out that my right front tire, wasnt spinning but all other 3 where, and I know the front and rear axles on my Montero are limited slip, the rear wheels where both spinning and the front wheel never moved under it's own power.
Since my Montero is a GEN 1 1991 4dr 3.0 the dash display for the 4x4 is different there are two lights, as soon as you put the 4x4 lever towards the 4h or 4L the light that depicts 4 wheels and the transfer case, is supposed to light up, when you start moving the wheel lock light turns on letting you know that the front axle is engaged.
This is really bothering if anybody can help me it will be much apreciated!
thank you!

I do own a 1998 model Mitsubishi Pajero io. For sometimes now (Past two weeks) the horn has been going off for no reason without pressing anything. Sometimes while driving off the road or on the traffic queue. Today morning after inserting the key it goes off continuously disturbing and working up the neighbours. I have temporarily disconnected the horn by removing the fuse. How do I solve this problem in the long term?

I've been fixing up my Montero and put a full sound system in there: component speakers up front, coaxials in the rear, 4channel amp to power the speakers, 12" subwoofer and another amp to power it, double din stereo with screen/dvd etc. Basically no more stock crap in play.
If you do a search you will see my many post regarding audio in the Montero, there seemed to be none til I got in, so hopefully those and this post will help other owners who want to make their ride even better.
After a recent long drive with passengers, I've been contemplating if I should put headrest LCDs. Well I just jumped in and got it.
First lets show you the pictures..

Wait is this the wrong picture? Nope its not.. These are stealth approved so when not in use like they are not there..

They are not real leather, but synthetic. Flows well with the vehicle, not as shiny as our seats, but unless you look hard or take a picture with flash as you see in the last picture, it is hardly noticible.
Each headrest has its own DVD player with Sony laser. So I have the dvd player up front and the video output from there to the input of the LCD headrests. However, if the people in the back want to watch their own movie, they can do so. There are also built in speakers. Also IR headphones are included, so people can listen to the DVD they are playing while the people up front watch their own. If your main deck has a separate audio output for rear section (meaning you can separate what the front and rear listen to) the LCD headrest also has audio input which will also transmit to the included IR headphones.
There is a USB slot, and SD card slot for those type of media. It plays mp3s, dvix, etc.
The poles adjust, and adjust fine to our vehicles.
The only problem is the tabs do not stick to whre you raise the headrest up. It will just slide back down. It's not a problem as the headrest are tall enough at its lowest position to support most heads.
The screen is 7" widescreen.
It also includes games! There is a disc of 1000 games, from classics like Mario, etc. Most nintendo games, and a few generic 32bit games. It comes with 2 wireless game controllers and 2 hybrid remote/game controllers (the remote controller turns sideways and acts as a game controller)
As for the install, I did everything myself and I'm use to installing these things so it was fairly straight forward. I ran the wires down the seats, you wont see any wires running.
I'll add more on the review.

Hi,
i've got a Pajero iO 99' GDI engine, manual gearbox. everything runs fine.. however, i want to upgrade the ignition system by installing a MSD Ignition System (i think a DSI). but i'm not sure if those systems will work on GDI engine. the webpage didn't have enought information, so i was wondering if someone have working experience with msd systems? if it works, wich msd product and accesories are needed for my pajero ?
thanks
Luisfer.

I've temporarily inherited a 2 Litre petrol Pinin on a 53 plate (uk) and I accidentally shorted out the cigarette lighter when my phone/nav charger decided to fall apart while I was removing it from the 12v dash socket. Its left me with no power to the cigar lighter and the dashboard display is now also not working. I've gone through every fuse in the fusebox in the engine compartment and they are all ok.
I have'nt got a clue where else to look.
Any idea's anyone.
Thanks
Alan
