I bought the Timing Belt at Autozone and the compter said that a 4g37 (1.8 eclipse) is an interference aplication. WHy is it that every thing ive read in other forums say that its a non interference and a place with "professionals" say that it is an inteference engine. Please tell me the 4G37 is a non interference engine, PLEASE!

I know my way around cars, but i see the locations of the timing belt and i see it kind of dificult. Should i have it fixed for 80 bucks or should i try to do it myself. If sohas anyone here ever done this on a 1.8 SOHC 4g37, can u give me any hints or steps including the belt diagram.

My 1.8 Eclpise threw the timing belt, and i think 4g37 engines are non interference. Am i right?? Do i need a Valve Job?

Okay new thread for a new(not so new) problem. My car is having problems starting when it is cold. Even in the summer sometimes(when it is warm) it wont want to start. I give it gas and it just wants to die. Hell it takes me litarally 10 minutes just to get it to start and stay on. I put 93 octane in it the other day and a concentrated fuel injector cleaner in it but i dont think thats going to do anything. Do i need to change the injectors or whatelse could it be?

i got a 91 eclipse gs 1.8 and i was replacing the power steering line and i just got that all done and i started it up and it was still on the jack stands and it started to clicking. first i thought it was the lifters due to lack of oil so i let it down and poured some more oil in just to be safe and its still knocking and i have oil pressure, i did a cold compression check and 2-4 reads about 165 each and number 1 reads about 125. now the engine has only ben ran about 15 seonds at idle total since its ben clicking. so i think the timing belt slipped or somthign. so my question is before i go and tear it all down is how do i check the timing cus i dont see any marks on the pulleys, and if the timing did get outta wack could i just set it the timing again would it be fine or would i need a new valve or have the valve seated or somthing? any help would be great cus its gotta be fixed by the 11th thanks.

so i have a high mileage 1.8 motor but still runs great......i just put and exhaust system into it and an after-market air-intake on it as well.....they both seem to help it out but i would like to know of what else to do to make it quicker?.....(port & polish) i dont really know what would be the best thing to do...
if anyone could help that would be sweet!!!

ok I need help I was cleaning off my engine removed the heat shield from the exhaust manifold and found a crack which I heard was common for cast iron exhaust manifolds. Now I have searched far and wide and canot find a exhaust header for a 1.8L eclipse I dont think the 2.0L will fit I wish I did because there are a lot of options. My question is does anyone know if there is a aftermarket exhaust header for the 1.8L or should I just get a good junk-yard one or get a oem replacement? all help is greatly apreciated.

ok well I just bought a 94 eclipse 1.8l yesterday. and I was just cleaning up the engine bay and was checking the air filter. and cleaned off the battery because it had some corosion on it. now after I hooked everything back up the car started then instantly died. then after that it would start then after I would rev it up a bit or try to drive it the minute I left off the gas the car would die. I suspected a vacuum leak but after looking everything over nothing seems to be out of place no cracks in the boot or anything like that. so I disconected the battery because I heard it can reset the ecu. then hooked it back up the car ran fine and didnt die after letting off the gas. so I took it for a spin, while accelerating everything is fine then when I let off the gas the car starts to run really rough. but when I come to a stop the roughness drops down then it runs fine again. it only runs rough when I let off the gas while driving. thanks for any input or help anyone can offer me to figure out whats wrong. I am sure there is something I might be over looking or just dont know seeing I am new to this car.

I have a 92 Eclipse with the 1.8L I just purchased and the auto tranny was recently replaced by previous owner. It will shift from park to reverse to neutral to drive (vice,versa), however when in Drive gear, it will not start out in 1st gear and go to 2nd. When I manually shift from D to L or 2, it still will not downshift.
The fluid level and color are normal. Where should I start to diagnose?

so what does everyone think of me doing a motor swap from a 1.8l to a 4g63 turbo motor? im sure everyone on here has seen this more than once but i figured i would like to get some opinions before i get myself into something i cant handle. if anyone knows..how much would this cost approximately?

I want to know if a 4g63t will bolt up to my trans and will it hold the power or will it go kablewee? i know the ecu but what about the harness too?

Hi, I have a 94 Eclipse (1.8L) and it will only start sometimes. When it doesn't start it won't even crank over but I can push start it. Otherwise when it wants to it cranks over and starts up just fine. People keep telling me that it might be the battery but I know it's not because I had it tested. Has anyone else heard of this ever happening or possibly know what the problem may be?

Hi im new to the forums

but i have a 1990 late model eclipse with the 1.8l, 112,000 miles on it. My car was having problems starting in the mornings when it was cold. it would take me a while to get it going but after that it would run without a problem but one night i had been driving it around and parked it. i came back out to drive it bout an hour later and it went to start up, fired over once and then died. wouldnt start at all. i took it to the shop and he told me that i needed a tune up badly and changed the plugs, cap and rotor. still wouldnt start. changed the fuel pump and still wouldnt start up. he sprayed some starting fluid in and it will run off of the fluid then die after its used it all up. he was thinking that it was the fuel pump relay but i was thinking otherwise....i called mitsubishi and i didnt even get a chance to explain what all it was doing and the guy told me to change the ecu and that would prolly take care of it. i went and pulled an ecu today from a car in the junkyard to see if that will do it but im not going to be able to put it in till tomorrow. i also pulled what i think is the fuel pump relay but i cant find the part number anywhere on the internet. the number that is listed on the part is E8T069751412.
If anyone would be able to tell me if this is it or not it will be appreciated and also if anyone else has had this problem(which i hear it happens a lot with the 1g) and if a new ecu fixed it

i know anything is possible with enough money. but heres my idea... everyone around here knows my car and how slow it is.. (1.8l) im looking into a 4g63t swap right now, but i was wondering bout putting the 90-91 front end on my car, i have all the parts, and plus i think they look bad ****.. so yea... just hit me with any info... thanks

ps. this woudl be a winter project and so when spring rolls around, i wanna be rolling a 94 1.8l converted to a 90-91 gst...

Hi all, What are some common problems with these cars in referance to starting? I just got this car and know nothing about it from the PO. I changes the ECU and distributor cap. The coil is good and I got spark to all plugs. Timming is good, at least at the cranking speed of 800 to 1100 rpm's. It just wont start, cranks like a trooper though. I tried ether (starting fluid) and still no start. Chilton tells me to check the 'power transistor', which I still need to find

, but I was thinking... you guys are the experts... so I was hoping for a little advise. I have seen similar threads but, none have been as specific as this or they havnt been able to quite help. Thanks.

i own a 1991 eclipse gs with the pop up style lights and was wondering if i can get fenders and a hood off a 1st gen to convert it to the bar style lights and if i did that what modle eclipse would i have to get a body kit for.
and also what is a good engine to swap out the 1.8 that can maybe use the same transmission or what engines transmission will fit in there?

ok, i have a 94 eclipse 1.8L.
I have a minor oil leak, but for the life of me i can't figure out where its comin from? A drip will run from the Plug on the oil pan, and i will see a drip from the from of the oil filter, and the back. but its not like drip drip drip, its just builds up, then drips. Nothin major, just after awhile it builds up and needs to be stopped.

ok heres the deal.. im looking to turbo my 93 eclipse 1.8L and i am curious where i could find a kit with just the basics such as the turbine, oil lines, downpipe, manifold ect.. without like the injectors and stuff

Hello,
My wifes 92 1.8L blew up awile back, and I couldn't seem to find another one for a descent price. There are plenty of 2.0L out there (used japanese engines) so I bought it. I know I will need a new brain for the car, and i was wondering if anyone has tried this or if knows a site that will list the interchangeable parts.. ie intake manifold, engine wireing harness, exaust manifold, clutch things of that nature. I purchased the long block. So any help of what i can use off of the 1.8L would help a lot.

I've got a 1997 Mitsu Eclipse with a 1.8L engine. Which has finally taken its last breath. Can i replace this engine with a 2.0L engine farely easily or is this going to have to be a direct swap for another 1.8L? and why? Thanks everyone.

hey everyone... my turn signals in the front stopped working. my rear lights work just fine... i checked the bulbs first... and they were good... then the little thing under the head unit and changed it out for a diferent one... and that didnt work... o this is on a 94 eclipse 1.8l... so yea.. anyone have any suggestions? thanks

Any input on this... I have heard of some people saying that this swap cant be done because of the amount of work that is required in order to get this engine to fit into my car, but again, have heard others that say its a pretty simple swap. Just wondering if any of you know or have heard if this swap is easy or pretty tough.
Also, if anyone knows, ever since i have had my eclipse (I bought it used about 4 years ago with 83k miles), the AC hasnt seemed to work right. I can turn it on, but anytime i put the car in neutral, my idle drops to like 300rpms, and occasionally, the car will cut out. I haven't figured out what this is, and none of my friends seem to know, and I haven't taken it to any mechanics because none of them around here seem to know much about imports. Please let me know.

ok so i read over all the pinned topis that i thought might have somethin to do with this but i couldnt find it discussed anywhere...
my question:
i have a 1.8L 93 eclipse base model... i cant find many performance parts for my car... so my question is.. would it be better to buy a 2.0 engine or just buy a bigger block? if i bkiught the block would my heads blt right up? what should i do if i want the "go" along with the "show"?

Hola ojala alguien pudiera darme una mano.mi problema es el siguiente tengo un mitsubishi eclipse del 91 que venia con motor 1800cc con un eje de leva y con 8valvulas.le compre un motor de un mitsubishi eclipse aņo 91 motor 2000cc doble leva (dohc)con 16 valvulas turbo intecooler.el problema es el siguiente el auto quedo con el sistema electrico del motor antiguo pero solo la parte del chasis osea de la carroceria donde uno enchufa el cenisero el tablero etc.en la parte del motor donde uno enchufa los inyectores y el flujometro etc.todas las partes que tiene que ver con el motor son de un ramal de un mitsubishi eclipse motor 2000cc pero sin turbo.El auto presenta unos problemas en bajas revoluciones ya que antes de las 3009 rpm uno acelera afondo y el auto se chupa o se que tirando tirones y no anda fuerte desues del rango de las 3000rpm elk auto anda super bien corre super fuerte.el auto esta ahora con ecu o computador de un mitsubishi motor 2000cc sin turbo y por eso pasaba eso pero compre el ecu para el modelo de motor que tengo osea para un motor 2000cc turbo para el eclipse.el problema que como tengo el sistema electrico del auto antiguo el computador no puede controlar el flujometro y lo tengo que desenchuar.tambien por ese problema compre el flujometro que le corresponde al motor pero este trae un pin mas osea en la parte del enchufe trae un conector mas .mi consulta es que puedo hacer porque quizas ese cable lo puedo puentiar o lo mejor seria compra un sistema electrico para el motor nuevo.
Por favor una ayuda porque estoy desespera
si alguien tiene alguna opinion o sabe coimo solucionarlo se lo agradeceria bastante

i have a 93 eclipse 1.8 sohc but i want the dohc 2.0... will the dohc directly bolt up or will there be a few mods or .... major mods ?? and i want to go all motor and no turbo so the dohc is the best choice right ?

i have a 94 eclipse 1.8L and everytime i go to go into 3rd gear it makes a grinding sound and doesnt go into 3rd at all....this gets very annoying so i've been just skippin 3rd and goin right into 4th, wut is it that would cause this to happen, i need a possible quick fix for this if there is one....HELP!!!!
