Hey guys - I have been chasing a knock that was coming from the front of my limited now for 6 months. I thought it was brakes - nope, ball joint - nope, front bearing - nope. It would happen when deaccelerating and accelerating. Sometimes knock would be worse in parking lot. It was so bad, you could feel the knock thru the floorboard.
Well the dealer found that the rubber bushings on the front sway bar were dry. They applied grease to these and Shazam - no more knocking.
Thought I would post the fix in case someone else out there is having this problem!

Hi all,
I'm getting to the final stages of the timing belt change on my '97 Montero LS. I dropped one of the ac compressor mounting bolts and while fishing around for it I found an earth strap down there unattached. Should this earth strap run through one of the bolts for the ac comp bracket?
Many thanks,
Reuben

I have a 02 Montero Lmt. The oil light has come on and there is a ticking noise in the top of the motor. There is no noise coming from the bottom. It is not knocking. I had a friend look at it and he said that it seems that it is not getting enough oil pressure to the top of the motor and the noise are the lifters. The oil was changes and black chips were in the pan. He said that maybe the oil valve is stuck open and cannot build up enough pressure but we don't know where the valve is. Does anyone know where it is or if that could really be the problem? Any ideas? I would appreciate the help since I am a female and have no idea! haha!

Hi All,
I recently bought a 1990 Pajero with the following specs:
4 x 4
3 Door
Gasoline Engine
I do not know anything about engines so I don't know the model of the engine.
I need a manual because I want to know what the features are.
Upon using it, I have seen the following problems:
1) A little smoke comes out of the exhaust. The smell is not tolerable.
2) There are some oil dropping, but just a little.
3) The lock on the left wheel for the 4 wheel function does not go all the way to the lock position. It only goes halfway, so I place it on the free position.
4) One time when I used 4L, I noticed skid marks. It's odd because I just drove 2 meters slowly on a flat concrete surface.
I need a repair manual, specially for the engine and wirings.
Any comments and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi, I bought a second hand 86 Pajero NC 2.6 litre and have had the engine rebuilt and I put it in myself but it is running rough(maybe a bit rich) during warm up.It also spits out a wet black spray during warm up. I put a basic carby kit in it but I'm not too sure what I should be looking for next. It runs well once warmed up. Any advice on this would be much appreciated.

I have an '05 Montero and I've almost run out of gas on several occasions. It appears that when fuel is low, the light on the dash comes on, however, there is no audible tone (beeping) like most cars have to alert you that you are low. Can someone verify that in fact there is no beep on this model, or is mine just not working.
thanks

Can someone please tell me in very simplistic terms how to turn off the Maintenance Required light . My 1993 Montero just hit 150,000 and has a new engine, and being as the Maintenance Required light is scheduled to come on at 150,000 miles and my engine only has about 20,000 miles, I would like to turn the light off. I did take off the instrument panel behind the steering wheel, but could not find a switch to turn the light off. So if anyone could please give a very specific answer as to how to turn the light off and exactly where the switch is located, I will give it another shot. Thanks so much.

Hi guys, I have a 98 Montero Sport LS and for the most part I've been very satisfied with it but as of last night I have a wiper problem that I need to fix as soon as possible.
The wipers turn on and travel to the vertical positoin and then get stuck. I have to push them to help them return to the down postion and they will wipe back and get stuck again.
Has anybody experienced this problem?
Does anybody know where to get a repair manual?
The nearest Mitsubishi dealer is 1 hour from me so this repair is something I'd most likely be doing myself.
Thanks,
Seamaster

BIG problems
While towing a caravan home (16ft) the at/temp light came on, when i SLOWLY cruised into a town and stopped at traffic lights i found i couldnt go forward, i just reved, but i still had reverse.
I did a COMPLETE transmission oil change (and flush) and now when you first drive the car it is PERFECT but when it seems to reach a higher temp it just starts slipping? in drive and you have to nurse it home.
Has the transmission gone to its maker or are there servo bands that may need adjusting?
ANY help greatly appreciated.

Hey everyone, new here and looking for some info.
We're looking to buy an SUV and a Montero Sport (probably '99-'01)is one, among others, that I'm interested in.
I have a few questions if you don't mind answering
1. What Kind of H.P can I expect?
2. Towing capacity? I have about 3500 lbs of boat to tow. I'd like at least a 5000 lb. capacity
3.Are there any issues such as transmission problems or rearends or whatever that I should be aware of? Do they have a tendency to rust? I'm in an area where they use salt in the winter.
4. What kind of MPG can I expect? (the sticker is never right)
5. How's the fit and finish? I hate squeaks and rattles.
6. How's the ride? I have a 25 min ride each day to work on the highway.
I'm sure I'll think of a few more as you answer these questions.
Thanks in advance

I have removed the middle console, the old radio/CD and I am about to replace it with a MP3 player. The wiring harness connection is different!! It had to be. Can anyone tell me what the setup of the wires into the original connector are? Or ... does anyone have the manual for the original radio/CD Pajero 2005?
Thanks in advance!

My owners manual says I should change the my manual transmission fluid every 30000, i think. regardless, My 1999 Montero Sport has 115000 on it and I have never changed nor checked the manual transmission fluid.
Could someone please inform me as to how I check it and how I change it?
I think it needs it because lately I have noticed a whining noise coming from the trans when gearing is engaged.
I REALLY appreciate any help!

Hi, I have a 1994 Mitsi Shogun 2.8td LWB GLS with Auto-Transmission. This may sound daft, but can anyone tell me how to check the Transmission oil level. The manual says to do it with the engine running, but when I do this the dip-stick shows that it's over full by quite alot. When I check the level from cold, it shows the level as nearly empty. I really need some advise on this as I'm sure it's low, mainly due to the gearbox 'jumping' through the gears for a second or two. As though it doesn't know what gear to be in. It's not like this all the time, and it normally only happens when cold. I don't think the problem is the gearbox as, like I said, the fault isn't always there. I would really appreciate anyone's advice on this, my local dealers seem to think it's over full, but it hasn't been topped up since they serviced it 26,000 miles ago. Thanks in advance.

Okay gang, here's the deal. My Montero will start up with no problems when cold. After it is warmed up though, if I turn it off and leave it to run errands, when I come back out and attempt to restart it, I have a hard time getting it to start. It cranks okay, but it acts like its starving for, or getting no fuel. It will eventually start, then dies when I put it in gear for a few times. Once I get it going and drive away all the problems dissappear and it runs and idles fine..... until the next time I turn it off, then it starts all over again. It doesn't seem like a fuel pump or filter issue because is runs fine once it gets going. Sometimes when it won't start I will take the air filter hose off the engine, open the throttle and spray some starter fluid in. Doesn't seem to help. My guess is something electrical, but I really don't want to take it to a dealer who will want to start throwing expensive parts at it. I've replaced the engine and transmission within the last two years and would really like to keep the vehicle, but am getting a little frustrated with it. Also, I've experienced the same problem I've read about in this forum where I turn the ignition key and nothing happens, but it will eventually crank over. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!!

Hi,
When I start the engine, everything seems normal. However, when I engage the transmission, funny noise (not loud really but you can hear it) is developed and when I shift it back to park the noise disappears. Back to gear - noise back on.
I noticed that this happen during cold start and tends to disappear when engine gets towards operating temperature.
any thoughts ?

Hello all,
i have a 95 montero sr.
about a year ago the abs light came on . i've been told it's either the computer or the sensors. the tech's at the dealerships want to just change all the parts which is ridiculous. is there a way to find out the exact problem ? will it generate some code that i can check ?
second, about a month ago the brakes strarted to engage half way down. the pedal needs to be pumped for it to stop. I have changed two new master cylinders with no change.
could someone suggest what the problem might be ?
thanks.

Hey all!
I'm a new member, joined two days ago, was on the web looking for answers regarding my 91 montero, came upon this site and jumped right in.
I've been having a problem with a used tranny that I had installed this past fall along with a rebuilt engine --- gonna drive this truck for another twenty years! Anyway, I delved deep into my Haynes manual the night before last and found something so incredibly easy to try to fix the tranny.Yesterday my husband gave it a go. All it took was a small adjustment to the throttle cable and now it's running like a bran new tranny. I can't tell you how happy I am!
Three days ago, I was actually out looking for a new suv, couldn't find anything that I liked, came home, got out of my husbands' Raider, hugged my Montero and swore that I'd get her fixed. Guess she liked that! Took her out a little while ago and she acted like a perfect lady.
That's my story for the day. Just remember, don't ever give up!!!
Have a great one!

I have a 2001 Montaro Sport with 46K that spends more time at the dealer than under my ass. Problem started with "Service Engine Soon" light coming on & staying on steady. Been in the dealer's shop over a week with them tracing wires and checking O2 sensors. Today they said there were 4 sensors and a pinched wire they had to bridge around. Computer codes show a lean condition, so they need to keep it longer.
Any ideas what it could be? Dealership talked to Mitsubishi - California & did what they suggested, but no changes. Help!

Have a huge problem. I own a 1989 Montero 4x4 V6 3.0L SUV. Last weekend started it, ran for about 30 seconds than just quit. Tow'd to small local shop. They remove timing belt cover only to discover that the bolt from pulley to crankshaft had completely sheared off. I have seen on other sites same problem has been experienced by others same make and model. My questions are can it be repaired... if so any suggestions on how to get remainder of bolt out.
Thank you. Trina

Hi all:
I was reading the post that njbill had regarding bad bearings on his '02 montero. I have had similar but different problems with my '03 (47k mile) montero. I have replaced all the rotors and brake pads on my montero already.
It started when we got a bad vibration, during braking at highway speeds. The problem got worse over time and the truck started to shutter during braking. I immediately assumed that it was front rotors so I replaced them with a new set of semi-metallic pads. After taking the truck for a test ride, I still had the vibration (although not as intense). I had the rear rotors machined and new organic pads put on the rear. Prob went away for 2k miles and eventually came back. Side note - Ive never been satisfied with machining rotors on any car - it seems to be temporary fix. I replaced the rear rotors and was explaining the problem to the brake guy. He had mentioned that alot of customers have been trashing rotors because they are using the low-residue ceramic brakes. Apparently, they are hard on rotors. I did not tell him that I had ceramics all the way around - but I had Raybestos ceramic brakes from Pepboys. I trust this guy because all he does is supply brake parts to SOCAL mechanics (Don Erbe Brakes in Oceanside). Im not trying to plug this guy but he actually has all montero brake parts in stock and 3 different rotors for the montero.
Anyway, I have new rotors all the way around and new non-ceramic brake pads. Its funny that all four rotors had to be replaced AFTER using raybestos ceramic pads. I think I will put up wioth a little residue from semi-metallics after this $500 DIY brake job.
For all the DIY mechanics out there - check the rears if you do the fronts - they wear almost as quick. I was amazed to see how much wear I have seen on the rear rotors on the Montero. Mitsu did a good job balancing brake wear to all four wheels.
What I have not been able to figure out is occasionally, I will hear a faint groan from the brakes in normal low speed braking. Its intermittent so I have not been able to track it down. I even loosened the e-brake to insure that it was not dragging, bled the brakes, tightened the bits to proper torque... Still cant figure it out. It happens a couple times a week so its not frequent enough for me to look at further. I have not checked the bearings, but I know there is no percevable lateral movement in the tire when shaking in and out.... Maybe its the ABS system?
Just want ed to share my experience with teh other DIYers out there. Let me know if you have anythoughts on the groaning...

My 2002 XLS has 35,800 miles on it. I took it to the shop because it was making a clunking noise when turning. The dealer said I had two worn bushings that were not covered under warranty. They told me these parts were covered for 36 months/36K miles and I am over 36 months. That cost me $230.
I picked the vehicle up after work yesterday (Friday) and was in a hurry to get home. After driving the vehicle for a while, I noticed the same clunk when changing directions. As I shook the vehicle back and forth in the driveway, we isolated the noise to the front passenger suspension/wheel. When I push the front passenger tire in and out I can feel mechanical play and metal-to-metal noise.
I have an appointment to take it back to the dealer on Tuesday but feel like they should have caught this when it was in the first time. Does my problem sound familiar to anyone here?... ball joints maybe? If I knew what the problem might be, I would feel a little better going back there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill

Just joined today as I am having gearbox problems with my Shogun which is a 1998 model 2.5 turbO diesel
Does anyone happen to know if a 1988 gearbox will fit in it a I have the chance of one
which has been rebuilt.
Thankyou in advance for any help you can give me.

I am replacing the Alternator on my wifes Montero.
I got the alternator out by removing the two bolts, but I didn't see a way to adjust the belt tension. I kind of teased the alternator out but now I don't know how I am going to get in reinstalled.
Is there a tensioner somewhere?
Is there an online manual somewhere for the full size montero?
THANKS, First post!!

Hi from dallas..any help would be good. My 95 Montero sometimes woun't start. I turn the key and, no clicks or nothing. the dash lights dims some as if it were starting, but no turns. If I continue to keep turning the key off and on to start position, It eventually starts, but some times it takes alot of turns. Replaced Starter, new alternator, and battery..any thoughts. Could it be the ignition switch? Thanks John

and what is the difference between the last 2 settings 4hlc and 4llc i assume the lc stands for locked centrediff but what is each setting used for?
