One of the three most asked questions on this forums relates to the 4WD operation and what the flashing dash lights mean. I have pinned this topic and attached a link which describes the system quite well (including pics).

Aside from the russian link the only other place I know to get Original Mitsu Service manuals is from mitsu directly. They do carry/stock the oldest manuals in the US. I assume it's the same overseas.

As for the imported vehicles, I'm sure the local mitsu dealerships will have factory manuals for them as well.

Haynes, Chilton's and Mitchell (CD) versions are usually only adequite at best and in many cases lacking in clarity/accuracy.

The factory manual will be a 200-300 dollars but well worth the cost in head scratching time. :)

I've had an offer to supply a service manual to use on our site. Not sure how to go about storing it on our server and if it is copyright material.

I have asked the questions to our administartor and am now waiting for a reply. It would be great to have a reference doc like this at our fingertips but I don't want to go to jail over it.

It is copywrited in the US. Not sure where the servers are though and if mitsubishi forums.com is a US corporation or not. If they are, I would expect them to be liable for copyright infringement so IMHO I wouldn't put it up.

OTOH, I'm not a lawyer so I may be totally wrong about it.

i have a x reg 3.0l petrol shogun sport and i was wondering if some one could help with my flashing 4wd green light, as i also have the yellow ABS light coming on when i stop after about a mile of driving. it will reset and go off when engine is turned off but will come on on every trip.
i had this problem about a month ago but it went all of a sudden and i thought that was that but obviously not.

has anyone had this problem or know what it might be?
also would anyone have a wiring diagram of the 4wd system?

any help would be very much appreciated as this is doing my head in now.

Hello, I am having the exact same problem as you and I was wondering if you ever got an answer for it. I recently had to have my auto tranny rebuilt($4000) and it seems to me that these same lights came on just before it quit on me. My 4WD indicator flashes all the time and my ABS light comes on after sitting at a light for a time. It will go off if I turn the truck off and restart it but it comes back at the next traffic light. Could this indicate overheating? I looked in the link above to find the answer but could not find any mention of the ABS light meaning. MY warrnaty on the tranny rebuild is until February so I need to know if this is tranny related so I can take it in for warranty work. If you found an anser for this, please let me know.

I am a new member and drive a 98 Challenger (Shogun ??) Auto 3.0l petrol and I desparately need help on this 4 wheel drive "flashing light" issue.

Driving along in 2 wheel drive, suddenly I get this alarming 'grinding/whirring' sound from the front axle. On slowing right down to almost a stop, there is an audible clunk in the front drive train and and I feel a jolt, almost like some disengagment.

At this point, the 4 wheel drive green lights are flashing (sometimes they flash before the grinding starts) Doesnt seem to happen in 4 wheel drive but not sure as havent done much distance to test.

I am not mechanical and have taken it to the local Mitsubishi dealer who hasnt been able to help as it doesnt happen all the time. What advise can I give the dealer to help them fix it. I really enjoy the vehicle and want to get through this hurdle. Mileage is 137000kms (85000miles)

Your auto hubs are engaging. Most likley you will need to have re-built and re-packed with grease. I would try and engage into 4wd and drive for a short time to see if problem goes away. There could be other issues like the vacum or electronic control components as listed in the previous link but definitly sounds like hubs coming in when they shouldn't be.

No problem-hope you get sorted.

Usually if the hubs do not engage its a problem with the electricl or vaccum circuit. From your description they are coming in by themselves so its probably a mecanical fault with the spring mechanism in the hubs themselves. Sometimes by engaing into 4wd it helps the system get lubricated in essential areas. Should engage monthly to keep things operational.

I have a 2001 Montero XLS 3.5L 6G74 Engine. The 4WD lights began flashing after changing the spark plugs and wires. Then the service engine light came on. I went back to double check the fittings, and found a small vacumm hose that I missed. It was just to the left of the EGR valve looking from the front. I had to climb up on the back of the engine to see it. Reconnected the vacumm line (3/8" or smaller)and the flashing 4WD lights were back to normal. I disconnected the battery to reset the "service engine soon" light (about five minutes) and the light has stayed off. I never would have guessed this little vacumm line would affect the 4WD lights. Problem solved. But note, this problem was self inflected :)

I am just glad tht after all the work of taking off the plenum (intake manafold) that I have all the fittings back on correctly but now I am good for another 100K.

i have a question, i just recently acquired a 1994 pajero 2.8 exceed. just want to know, why is it called super select 4wd? what are 2h, 4h, 4lhc, 4llc? what are those and its purposes? thank you

2H (2WD High Speed) means you are driving on 2 Wheel specifically the wheels in your back. You can see this lighted in your dashboard.

4H (4WD High Speed) means you are on part-part 4wd and if selected, the all the wheels in your dashboard should light. 4H enable you the use 4WD on high speed, on concrete or bitumen without damage to your transmission.

4L (4WD Low Speed) You are on 4WD mode in low speed (high torque).

4LLC (4WD Low Speed Lock Center Differential) - should be used only in a very tight situation such as one of either your front or rear wheel has no traction (not touching the ground). Lock Center differential engages all wheels at the same speed. You should not use this in concrete road since you will damage your transmission.

Our 1999 Pajero IO has a flashing orange center Diff light (transfer case).

It flashes orange (slow flashing) as soon as the ignition is on.
It flashes very quickly whenever accelerating and then goes back to flashing slowly when accelerator is released.

Does not flash when diff lock is engaged (ie. in 4H dl of 4L dl).

The web page below suggest this is an electrical problem I am hoping it is and just wondering....
