In late 2005 I started conducting my own reliability research. I'm reporting absolute stats like "times in the shop" that will make the differences between cars much clearer. Relative ratings obscure too much--how large is the difference between "better than average" and "worse than average"? I’ll also be updating results four times a year, so there will be information on new models sooner. I'd like to be able to provide reliability information on the Outlander, but haven't started collecting data on any model year yet because too few owners are signed up to participate. Participants report repairs the month after they occur on a one-page survey. When there are no repairs, they simply report an approximate odometer reading four times a year, at the end of each quarter. To encourage participation, panel members will receive full access to the results free of charge. Details: Vehicle reliability researchComments, questions, and suggestions welcome.

I'm already somewhat worried. The transmission can be sluggish every once in awhile, making the vehicle feel like it is jerking/slipping. I'm still under 1,000 miles on an 2007 model.

That result was posted. So far at least the repair rate appears low, as in good. The result is asterisked because of the marginal sample size. I'd like to get rid of that asterisk and have a result for the 2008 with the next update, in August. That result for the 2007: a better than average repair rate. Additional participants would permit us to provide a more precise result for the 2007, and results for the 2008 and (soon) 2009 as well. The current results: TrueDelta Vehicle Reliability Survey results

In the latest results, the 2007 Outlander had a repair rate of46 successful repair trips per 100 cars per year, which is about average, maybe a bit better. With more participants, we could provide more precise results, and include additional model years. For the full set of results, and to sign up to help: TrueDelta Vehicle Reliability Survey results

Results have been updated again. The 2007's result improved a bit, to 41 repair trips per 100 vehicles per year. We have a result for the 2008 as well this time, somewhat higher at 57 repair trips per 100 vehicles per year. But the sample size is very small for the 200, and this could be the reason for the higher repair rate. We'd like to provide full results for all model years--just need more participants. TrueDelta does now have a separate page of reliability results for each model. The one for the Outlander is here: Mitsubishi Outlander reliability comparisons

We have updated results for the Outlander to include owner experiences through March 2009. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year: 2008: 40, average, close to "better than average," but small sample size 2007: 46, about average A big thanks to everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in August and November. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years. Mitsubishi Outlander reliability comparisons

We have updated results for the Outlander to include owner experiences through June 2009. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year: 2008: 21, better than average but small sample size 2007: 29, better than average, sample size barely adequate Differences from last time probably due to the sample size. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years. We'll have further updates in November and February. Mitsubishi Outlander reliability comparisons
