QUOTE(pwee05 @ Sep 11 2008, 02:29 PM) my bad, i thougt you had a 2.0L. you would be fine to replace the belt. check the FAQ for the timing belt procedure. I outlined if for the 2.0L but there is a PDF link there that will show you how to do the 1.8 also
Or just buy a haynes manual... >.>

Dude, seriously, if he wants $300 (just for labor i'm assuming), and that includes towing, I'd go for it. It's kinda a pain.
If you don't have the money, and have the tools and the time to do it, yeah, go ahead and do it yourself, but if you don't have the proper tools, you are going to have to spend at least a hundred or two on everything you need, and by that point, you are only saving a hundred by doing it yourself. Remember, don't forget to change the tensioner, water pump, and any of the pullys that don't spin nice and smooth.
Ofcourse, it would be a great learning experience for you, and the good thing about the 1.8 is that if you mess it up, you won't destroy your engine, so you just gotta try again!

QUOTE (Thetrick @ Sep 11 2008, 11:55 AM) I did a quick search, didn't see anything on this... My question is very simple. My dad is much more mechanically inclined then me, would we be able to replace my snapped timing belt on my eclipe ourselves, or would it be easier, and worth it to have a mechanic take care of it? I got a quote from a guy out here who said he could tow it and do the work for 300$...does this sound like a reasonable price? Just wanted some input. Thanks. (IMG: style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) It's not that bad to change if you have the tools, the belt is about $23 at auto zone. I would definitely save the money and do it yourself. A Haynes manual is a big help too.
