Dang, power steering belts are prone to snapping on DSM's...

Glad I changed mine when I got the car. The power steering belt also runs the water pump I'm pretty sure, if not then it's the other belt. I know it's one of the two.

I get embarrassing squealing if I turn the wheel all the way to the side, I think my power steering fluid's low. Haven't had the chance to properly check it. (really I'm not sure of the exact process I am supposed to use anyway)

The simple solution to a squealing belt is to tighten it. Course, if inspection indicates it's time to replace it, then it's probably best to replace both. The local Mitsubishi shop worked on my engine three years ago (crank pulley fell apart in cold snowy weather and I had it towed.) They replaced the water pump (seeping) and alternator belt, plus some other work that had been collecting. However, they didn't replace the compressor belt, which proceeded to disintegrate about a year later. I'll never understand why they didn't replace both since that's recognized standard practice -- and for the obvious reasons.

there should be like a slider bar on your powersteering pump..
tighten that and it will make the belt tighter

Alright, cool.

Any way to tell if it's too tight or too loose by trying to move it with my hand?

Pick up a Hayne's manual for your car. It covers belt adjustment and a pile of other practical info.

greeny to answer your question (you might have already found out but) the water pump and power steering pulleys are both on the water pump. that's why it started to overheat
