Can anyone help me figure out what this noise is? It occurs during start up when it's really cold (today its -8F) and/or when I just start the engine. It lasts about 2 minutes or less. It's been going on for about 1.5 years and my car runs fine except for this embarassing noise at start up.

My car is a Eclipse GTS 2004...

Here's the link to the noise...

How many miles on the car?
Did you try other types of gas? maybe shell Optimum...also, after its warmed up alil, did u try to turn of the car and turn it back on???
Also..... check ur oil level and see if the engine is eating the oil up.. i dont think thats the case.. but just check...
Also, it could be the timing chain/belt tensioner... they are known to make cold start rattle........ make sure u take a look at the timing belt when u start the car... take the cover off.. because if thats the case, you need to tighten up the tensioner.. otherwise over time ur belt or chain is going to snap and im not sure if ur engine is an interference engine.. but if it is.. that means ul have to replace all the valves and get a new head gasket..

It wont make this noise once the car is warmed up. I have a lil over 64,000 miles on my car. I know I am due to have my water pump and timing belt replaced. The oil level is fine. My guy friend thought maybe oil wasnt getting lifted into the engine but said maybe its just my hydraulic lifters?

Aww, I was all excited about the video........very disappointing. You weren't even in it lol.

Sounds like a little diesel, $20 says its water pump.

Get it changed along with the usual crap like timing belt, etc.

If I'm wrong, at least your engine will be in one piece for a while.

I severely doubt it's hydraulic lifters. Unless your running 20w-50 weight oil in it in the middle of winter lol.

Enjoy the winter, I have it same here in Chicago lol.

Awww I'm sorry I wasn't in it. It was like 10am when I made this video. How urgent do you think it is for me to get this looked at? I work like crazy so I might not have time to do it until next Thursday...

If it was doing that for a year and a half.. you should be fine, but take it as soon as you can..you dont want to have to tow it.

yea my car makes the almost the same noise on start up on cold days and goes away and i have 80,000 miles on mine now. but im wondering what kind of maintenance i should get done to my car, because this is my first time owning a eclipse. but i know this though when i get enough money im going to get a 4gen eclipse with the 3.8L motor because those are some tough ass motors.

But keep in mind as tough as you may think it is, it is still a Mitsubishi. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif)

well a 3.8L is a GM motor and i had it in a 91 Bonneville and put 388,000 miles on it and the only i had to fix on it was the radiator and the alternator. and it still ran like a bat out of hell.

Hmm, now we have a GS, 2 GTS.. so we can throw out the possibilty that its the engine.. No belts....because the GTS has serpentine and GS has drive and ac belts.. or it could be tensioners are not very tight.......... Water pump.......maybe.......this is weird....I cant think of anything they have in common that could do that NOISE when its cold only..

It may be the same size as a GM motor, but it's not the same at all.

Mine kinda makes that noise too!! I have a GT with 108000 Miles. But mine goes away after about 10-15 seconds. I thought mine sounded alot more like exhaust or something. but sounds alot like the noise in that video... little more quiet tho.

ok well i fixed my noise..... like i said before it was my bumper vibrating....... now i'll also throw in that on cold starts my car runs retardedly rough and makes alot of additional vibration and noise due to my IAC being bad..... some people wont agree that the IAC is causing this to my car..... but all i have to say is this is my car...... i know what should and should not vibrate and make noise..... i also had the light checked when it first came on and this vibration will get louder the colder it is outside..... anyway...... the vibration was caused by the crush foam under the bumper..... i got into a slight fender bender in the summer of 08 and the foam had moved causing the bumper to not sit right... i just un bolted my bumper and slid the crush foam back into place and thats how i fixed my noise problem...... sorry if it doesn't fix your noise problem
