wow, now we have GT, GTS, and GS... def. something they all have in common, i think the water pump is not the same.. it must be something else.......if anyone fixes it, please let everyone know

The water pump is not the same but it sounds like the same noise. Not that that is a concrete answer. The pros will let her know.

ok well i fixed my noise..... like i said before it was my bumper vibrating....... now i'll also throw in that on cold starts my car runs retardedly rough and makes alot of additional vibration and noise due to my IAC being bad..... some people wont agree that the IAC is causing this to my car..... but all i have to say is this is my car...... i know what should and should not vibrate and make noise..... i also had the light checked when it first came on and this vibration will get louder the colder it is outside..... anyway...... the vibration was caused by the crush foam under the bumper..... i got into a slight fender bender in the summer of 08 and the foam had moved causing the bumper to not sit right... i just un bolted my bumper and slid the crush foam back into place and thats how i fixed my noise problem...... sorry if it doesn't fix your noise problem

Rear bumper?
what foam?
Also, did anyone else fix their car?

Updates everyone.. thanks

ok underneith your front bumper...... there is a foam insert called a crush foam...... (thats what the mitsubishi dealer techs called it)........ and that was moved a bit off when i got into a fender bender...... and that made my bumper vibrate and make that very same sound....... but it never vibrated until my IAC went bad.....

That's just the lifters, for some reason all 3rd gens do it. Mine does it all the time in the cold, goes away after about 5mins. It's normal for our cars & not a serious problem. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif)
From what I've heard, it's not worth having it fixed, it will just start doing it again, just the way the engine was designed I guess.

Thats what the mechanic said it was also. They said to use synthetic oil because it will stick to the lifters better and also get something called honey thick to add to the oil?! I'm glad other 3g's have this problem....

Correction. All OHC engines do it. Hondas and toyotas do it on day one from the factory.

I'm going to get it looked at this Thrusday I hope...I'll tell u when its fixed what it was and let u all know!

Did you get it figured out? Mine did the exact same thing. (GTS) It was embarrassing in the winter especially. I'll bet if you run 94 octane it will be a way better. There is carbon build up on your valves, etc that cause detonation when you first start it. These hot spots are less affected by better gas. I have done a combustion cleaning twice now and it is a LOT better. There is still a similar slight tick in the morning but for a shorter time that I think could be the lifters. Overnight, they leak the oil out of them and in the morning it takes a while for them to pump up, making a clicking noise until they do. That's why it's fine the rest of the day. Has anyone changed lifters and found success? The waterpump theory has some merit too. That's why I was wondering how your car was after the new timing belt and water pump.

Cold Start noise ... sounds familiar. Thought I was alone on that for a second there but since it's common then it's cool. I might try switching to synthetic blend or full synthetic, see if it helps any.

My '01 GT makes the exact same noise as well on cold mornings, really annoying but it goes away after a couple minutes. I've use 5w-30 full syn. so I don't think switching to full synthetic alone is going to help. =[
