Drives: 1996 Talon AWD. Built, but no longer drives: 1997 mitsubishi eclipse RS; 1990 Talon AWD; 1995 Talon AWD, 1997 Talon AWD. Seems like a pattern

take it for a drive and on a nice open stretch push forward on your gauge cluster. see if that works first, sometimes it wiggles slightly forward and disconnects the speedo plug slightly.

I had that happen on my 1G, but those speedo's are cable/mechanical driven.
If yours is truely dead, dealer is you only option I think.
It was a long time ago, but I think mine ran about $90 or so for a new one.

check the simple stuff first. the plug could have popped out of the tranny or something could just be gunking it up. did it get stuck at a certain mph or did it just go from reading ur speed limit to 0?

not sure on the 420a, but the 4g63, if ur standing on the passenger side, look on the left side of the tranny, the side closer to the firewall. theres a cable coming out. or at least thats where i remember it being, i might be wrong.

oh and judging by that it sound like the cable might have snapped or something, but check the speedo cable to tranny hookup first. speedo cables arent that expensive i dont think...and shouldnt be more thana couple hour change out

The speed sensor is located on top of the transmission on the side closest to the firewll. It is electrically operated, not mechanically (cable) operated.

You might have to take your rear tranny mount off (i'm not sure, replaced mine with transmission out of car). But when you do remove it, (there's a 10mm bolt on the side of it holding it in place) make sure the plastic gear that rides on the end of the sensor comes out with it, or it will fall back into the tranny. Like I said I had mine out of the car, but the gear fell back inside (It can't go too far so don't worry about that) just it's hard to reach through a 1" hole even with it up on a cherry picker. I can imagine if it were still inside the car.

Like everyone else said, check your wires and such before you replace it so you don't end up spending money on something you don't need.
