The Infamous Ticking Sound... Options

so today i crank up the car...
and damn it!!! the famous ticking sound...
not the first time its happened to me.. (replaced the heads last time)
im sick and tired of constantly fixing things wrong with this car.
my question is this.
how much time do i have before my engine gives out?
or will the car be ok even with the rocker rods/arms that are ticking??
yes i checked my oil and everything is ok. so lack of oil is no problem.

eesh...overkill..

Though lifter tick is annoying, it doesn't really hurt anything.
Here are your options;

1.) Ignore it.
2.) Change oil to a thicker viscosity. I use Mobil 1 15w50...rarely have a problem with lifter tick
3.) Change your lifters to "3g" lifters, whick have larger oil holes, increasing oil flow to the arm, getting rid of the tick.

yea, i know i over did it by changing the heads but i figured it gave me an excuse.

they have a tendency to tick louder, closer to when you're due for an oil change.

Hi, Have a 96 GT and once in a while I get the tick after leaving the car sit for a while but then it goes away. I would change the oil use the correct weight maybe a couple of quick changes to clean out the motor. Maybe some dirt in the engine clogging things up. Anyway don't go to thick with oil in cold weather not good and won't solve the problem.

You can try a quart of Bardhal right before you change the oil. What's happening is sludge is building up in the small passages going to or in the lifters. You need to clean that out.

Short trip daily driving will add to this problem because the oil never gets hot enough to melt all the gunk. If you're constantly short tripping you need to let it heat fully once or twice a week and maybe change your oil more often, or use more expensive part or full synthetic.

Try some MARVEL MYSTERY OIL with oil change using the same grade
and weight oil you have in the past......Fantastic stuff!!! If it is simply dirt and
gunk this will be the fix.

order up a set of 99 lifters (Cherry Hill Mitsubishi will probably have the best price around, They're located in Cherry Hill, NJ, and will ship to you if you're not local), they have a larger hole that increases oil flow, which will get rid of the ticking noise. Before you install them, just hold them up against your stock injectors to make sure the hole is larger on the new ones. It's a tedious job, but it will solve your problem once and for all.

BTW, that ticking noise, will in no way shape or form have any adverse effects on your engine. They tick because the "nozzle/opening" gets clogged over time.
