Drives: 1989 Mitsubishi/ Dodge Colt (Hatchback)
When I traveled on the interstate in my 1994 Mitsubishi Expo, I noticed that my engine was spinning at 3000 RPM for 70 MPH. Is this normal? Cause its half way to red line If not what might be wrong with it?

Sounds about right without the OD engaged. When in OD it should drop it by around 400RPM.

Sorry I forgot to metion. I have a 5 speen manuel. It spins at 3000 RPM on the 5th gear.

In that case it sounds a bit high to me as 5th is really OD mode on a manual. I don't really know the gear ratio's for your car but if you do a little searching you should be able to find out.

To figure if this is normal or not have you changed anything in the drivetrain such as installing different size tires from stock?

3000 would be about right since the gears are closer in ratio than the 4 gears including the over run in the F4A23 that would be in that as an automatic option. so 3000 is about accurate.

yes, 3,000 is right on in 5th gear-overdrive; i have a '93 awd expo with manual trans. remember, the tach is only accurate within about 100 to 200 rpm's at around 3,000....well maybe nowadays with all these electronics they're more accurate than
i believed....hey, what do i know...?

Max,

That is perferectly normal. Remember that this is a relatively now torque 4 banger, so it needs the revs because it is running higher (numerically) gear ratio.

Another way to look at it, your theoritical top speed is still 140mph. Of course, LRV will never get there because of lack of power (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) .
