First off Hi :

I have a 1997 Carisma 1.8 GLi ( SOHC 4G93 engine ? ).

1) Is the cam non interference on this model or am I looking at a meet of the valves and pistons if the cam belt fails ?

2) Has anyone ever replaced the rear drivers side ( UK Right hand drive ) brake pipe, the one that goes over the fuel tank ( bugger ) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Many thanks for you help in advance.

I will accept a guess ?

Add number 3

Engine managment light comes on, then 5 mins later goes off.............a week later........comes on , then goes off

It happens when driving at a steady speed, no problems are noticed ?

hi there Wonkey!

1. its an interferance i'm afraid, valves will be bent...
2. nope haven't done one but looks a pig.
3. if cars running ok, (not guzzling fuel like theres no tomorrow) then its prob o2 sensor on the blink, check the wiring and that the sensors reasonably clean. you can get a direct replacement sensor from ngk, (have found universal ones are sh*t). other thing is to give air intake a good clean too.

I've read so many comments saying the 4G93 SOHC was non interference , bugger (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

For a brief few months, the car was using petrol at the rate of 24 MPG last year, but now returns around 45 MPG, so if an 02 sensor will cost more then doing another 2000 miles at 24 MPG, I would rather trash the car at the breakers in 6 months time then pay out a fortune for an 02 sensor.

Will it run ok on a duff 02 sensor ?

on a duff lambda it will probably run rich and it would fail the mot emissions, need replacement as ecu light will keep coming on cause it cant control air/fuel/emissions.

think its worth an new 02 sensor, cheaper than trashing your cat for the sake of between £30 and £60 (thats the sensor and socket needed too fit it).

probl cheaper than peeing through fuel for the next six months.

you can get cam belt kit for around £120

Cam belt kit ? I bought a cambelt today from my local parts place for £16 and fitted it in around 40 mins. Mine is the SOHC not the GDi

I had the o2 sensor checked and it was fine.

So perhaps the light enjoys turning on and off for some strange reason ?

The only thing that is a bugger, is the rear break pipe, I can see why dealers charge £200, its a major, major job that involves removing the petrol tank and trying to put over 20 bends in the copper fuel pipe with a 5 foot straight section. I have never in all my life of working on cars seen such a bodge design when the Carisma brake pipes were routed.

I've been trying that. Its a 1997 car and OBD dont wont, MUTT-II dont work, the only one I have been told that will do the job is this Evoscan : http://www.motorscan.net:80/catalog/produc...;products_id=90

At £199, its worth the same as the car LOL !

If you need an O2 try the gray market factory parts, here's one in the states but don't know about the UK, still not cheap

http://www.mitsubishiparts.net/

Believe this car has two O2 sensors

the brake line routing is most likely for safety reasons. It's supposed to last the life of the vehicle therefore they dont' look at ease of servicability during design.

sort of unusual for the CEL to go on then off, usually it stays on once on,

I was told it could be some dust of very small debri from the air filter the passed through the MAF causing the light to go on and then once clear, the light goes out.

Cars fail MOT's at an alarming rate in the UK on corroded mild steel brake pipe. The Carisma is well know in MOT centers for rear brake pipe corrosion on models only 5 years old.

Maybe only one O2 in UK, the USA is stricter on emissions

don't know about debri in MAF, never heard of that

no MOT in USA, most states have zero safety inspection

if MUT-2 inop on a 97 you have something weird going on
