ok this isnt a eclipse question but it has to do with turbo problems so i thought i would go here. My buddie has a 03 Evo8. he has been having some boost issues and we cant figure it out. when he got the car he was boosting at about 15 psi on the stock turbo. it has full exhaust, greddy bov, and a ebay boost controller. the boost controller has always been screwy like he would turn it in the direction to turn it up and his boost would drop and he would turn it in the direction to turn it down and his boost would raise. so it was like reversed. well he started to notice over a few weeks that his psi on was dropping slowly every day and he is at 5 psi now and it wont go up or down no matter what he does to the boost controller. now the guy before him abused the shit out of it and he has had to fix alot of problems on this car. now i dont know a ton about turbo problems but i told him to check a few things. he checked for shaft play and he says there is about a milimeter of shaft play just a tiny bit. we took off the boost controller so it was just running off the wastegate and the boost numbers didnt change. he has ordered a new boost controller cause he thought it was faulty and he installed it and nothing changed. he checked for loose connections on his intercooler and everything seems tight. could this be a vaccum issue? im pretty lost and im just trying to help him out. if you guys could put up some suggestions that would be great.
Thanks

i dont know much about evolutions but..when you guys put back on the original hoses was there by chance a wastgate soelnoid? bc those lines are what a boost controller is installed, atleast it is on an eclipse turbo. i was actully messing with this today. but you said you guys changed that out and also put on a new controller so im not sure. bad sensor? and it could quite possibly be a vaccum problem so i would check any and all vaccum lines.

My guess is a boost leak for which you'll have to pressurize the system and look for leaks. If a leak is limiting it to 5psi, it's possible the MBC is unable to regulate that low and so it has no affect. If there's no leak, then I'd say the turbo is in trouble.

hes more than likely right. id do this. is there a high pitch whining noise when the car is under full bosst? that can be a sign of a leak

after checking for a leak check the wastegate actuator. It could be bad and opening too quickly

ok so he got a turbo for a steal and we installed it and not a thing changed. so im thinking a boost leak but we havent found anything yet. what could it be besides a boost leak? or is that pretty much it? when we took the old turbo off the hot side was all white on the blades so it looks like it was running pretty lean. could that have any effect on it? we also cleaned out he MAF sensor and no change there.

well i made a boost leak tester and we found out his greddy bov was leaking like crazy so we just put the stock one back on for now and there was a big leak at the throttle body/ intake manifold. we couldnt find exactly where it was but the little black half moon shaped thing that the throttle cable connects too that controls the butterfly valve thing you could wiggle a tiny tiny bit and it would change the pitch of the leak. but i still feel like there is a bigger leak somewhere. where else in that area could be leaking
