Hi

I've got a deal on some Boge front struts for a 1990 TP Magna, but I have no idea of the brand. Like everyone else, I use Monroe GT Gas.

Has anyone used this brand of shocks before or know anything about them?

I asked at a suspension chain store and they said Boge are just as good, but are more made for European cars. I think I'll give them a go anyway.

Gabriel Red Ryders can be a real pain because being US made, they don't fit the first gen Aussie-made Magnas - they don't have a notch in the piston rod that's on the Australian TM-TP Magnas.

The suspension guy also said that ball joints can last for years, as well as polyurethane suspension bushes, tie rod ends etc. I guess there's not many moving parts in them. He said a power steering rack (recon) should last around 5 years. That's about all you get out of CV Joints on this car also, before they start clicking when you turn.

Another thing he said was that having a majority of new suspension/steering parts (as opposed to older parts) does not affect the wear rate of any individual component in that area. The exception would be if almost everything was old. He said its more due to the way the car is driven. Wear rate of suspension and steering parts is also probably affected by tire tread depth and wear characteristics (rotation, balancing) and wheel alignment.

Curioso

Note: At a Supercheap Auto today I checked out a Gabriel Shock Absorber for TM-TP Magnas. It actually has the notch in the piston rod. So now I don't know whether it needs the notch or doesn't. I think Gabriel Red Ryders don't have the notch but the Gabriels made for the Australian Magnas do. The Gabriel's (I think they are labelled Red Ryder) made for the US Diamante equivalent model do not fit the Australian Magnas.

To the MODs - please close off this thread.

I had a 40-point suspension check and it came out that all my shocks are ok.
