I own a 1993 Magna V6 and have what I thought was lifter noise, a screw driver on the engine mount is where I hear the loudest noise. How do I differentiate between lifter and big end noise. I feel it is big end noise but don't want to get started on it until I'm 100% sure, I'd hate to find out my effort was for nothing. Can anyone assist ?

How many kms has the motor done ?
What oil are you using in the motor

on youtube some one has put to video noisy tappets

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtDUvRdH5U4

put the screwdriver on the rocker cover at the back and front
tappets are a constant noises in one revolution of the crankshaft

big end bearings make a totally different sound
one revolution of the crank shaft

does the oil pressure light flicker on and off

can you fit an oil pressure guage on the motor to check

Sorry for insufficient info.
164,000 Km
Caltex 20W 50
The screwdriver seems to indicate a noisy lifter, but I have changed then, altered their position, and the noise still appears to be the passenger side front.
Oil pressure light never comes on
Can't remember the exact figure but oil pressure is about 60
This noise only came into operation after I changed the timing belt and new head gaskets.
At first I thought I might not have tightened the cam gear sufficiently, but that's not it.
The car had only done 40,000 Km in the first 12 years.
