Being a 1989 it has an OBD II (OBD = On Board Diagnostics) port under the dash on the steering wheel side. Autozone and some others will read the code for you and tell you what it is but because of lawsuits they will no longer reset it like they used too. They standardized the port in late 1986's/1987 and on so they were all the same.

If you want to buy your own reader etc I suggest looking at a company like JCWhitney etc. You can get one to read and reset for around $70. Otherwise call around to your local auto stores. They will of course want to offer a repair on the spot.

incorrect obd2 didnt come out till 1996....

should have diagnostic port under dash tho but the older ones only had about 30ish codes.... so a code reader might do it if it reads obd 1

if they cant read it there is a manual way too ground pins and flash the code number thru the light or a dvom...

Buying a OBD I reader or combo ain't worth it .. too expensive ...
