I have a 2001 Mirage. After a long trip, my brake and battery lights came on. I went to a shop and had them test my charging system. They told me the alternator was bad, so I replaced it. After the replacement, the lights continued to come on, but intermittently. I took the new alternator out and had it tested as well as the charging system again at the shop. They said the new alternator might be defective, though it tested fine. I can try replacing it again, but I'm wondering if it's possible that I've overlooked something. I've read through other posts about similar problems, but haven't found a solution. Has anyone else had this problem?

The faulty alternator could have burned the max fuse in the under hood power distribution fuse panel. When it does this ive seen it illuminate certain dash lamps , especislly these 2

Has anybody been able to resolve this problem?

I really need help.

Mirage '00. 109K miles. 4 year old battery.

In a rainy and cold day suddenly Battery and Brake lights went on.

Now the car can start only with jump start.

Battery reading 11.71V - and can't start the car without jump start.
Break liquid level is a bit above MAX level.
Two lights on dash boards stay on.

charging system, fuse, actuator, brake liquid level?

Any clue? thank you

buy a new battery
the one you have has a bad cell and is not taking the charge

you are very lucky to get 4 years out of any battery

change the brake fluid if its old

thank you guys

I've done a couple of tests and...

Battery reading shows 11.86V when it's idle.
When I start the car with jump start and let it run for a couple of secs the battery shows voltage drop 8.5V.....7.3V.......6.5V......

Then again measurement in idle - battery shows 11.86V

I think it's obvious the battery doesn't get charged.

But whos fault it is? Alternator doesn't chare the battery, or the battery refuses to accept charge?

I just don't want to buy two things when really failed only one.

would it be possible to determine at least on 95% which component failed?

thanks

like i already stated , a burnt max fuse can also cause this.

Thank you guys. Problem fixed. Replaced alternator.

Then did full electric test at AdvacedAutoParts. No problems found. They suggested to replace battery cables.

How difficult to replace them, will I be able to do it by myself and what cable do I need (there are lots of them to choose from)?

thanks
