I'm getting ready to replace the Valve lash adjusters on my 1997 Galant. I wanted to know if there is any special tool needed?

Also the reason I'm doing this is because the engine started to make a loud knocking noise under the valve cover. I removed the valve cover and found two of the rocker arms on the intake side with losts of play in them. When you rocked the arm back you could see the lash adjuster slip out alittle and tap the top of the valve where they touch. I hope this makes sense.

Also does anyone have the torque specs, and pattern for the bolts that hold the rail that the rocker arms are on?

Any advice or recomendations before I start this would be greatly appreciated I am by no means a master mechanic but do have mechanical ability.

Yes , they do tend to cause quite a noise when they go bad. There isnt any special tools . but good tools are an extended pocket magnet, for when yu remove the old rocker shaft rails if the bad lash adjusters or other ones fall in a tight spot. They do tend to fall out easy. When i am putting them in , i like to use sum engine assembly lube and put sum on the lash adjuster and then put them in. Lots of times it holds them in long enough to the the bolts started on the rocker shaft.

A good thing that i also have at the shop is like a flat wide thin u clip that holds them in place also.

Thank you for the advice...

You wouldn't happen to know the torque specs for the bolts on the shaft rails? or if there is a sequence to tighten the bolts?

around 30-31 Nm. If i had recently dun one i would have taken pics . But i have changed any in 3 months. Make sure that yu inspect that all the rocker arms are up and ontop the valves before attempting to tighten the rail. They can easily be slightly off powition if over looked or one turned out of place. Ive been thru all this so its best not to rush cause yull overlook it and before yu kno it yur trying to tighten the rail and coming against lots of resistance.

The way i tighten them in sequence is to not do the one in the middle , but the 2 outside of that , so there is equal pressure on the rail. Then go to the outer ones of that and so on and then the one in the middle and keep going til its tight.
