It can be a couple of things. I'll go from the top to bottom listing the problems smallest to biggest.
the popping noise you hear:
* Can be your drum brakes; the springs inside might be rusted and all fucked up inside that when the wheel is moved it pops and frictions up everything inside (I had that happen to me once, i panicked as well for the noise would only occur when i would go forward and not in reverse; brought it into my mechanic, 40 bucks and 1 hour later it was fixed)
* CV boots, or the joints are going out, maybe the grease inside is leaking somewhere else, maybe there is a small cut/tear in a hard to see location.
*Check the connection of the boot to the wheel, to the drive shaft and back, look very carefully, is there anything in the way, really worn out etc etc.
For the LSD:
*It' supposed to do that. To my knowledge my 944s does the same thing, that's the perk of having LSD, instead of 1 wheel giving power and turning, both wheels spin giving better control ans speed, however that was in a RWD car, something tells me that your car is AWD so im not sure, never heard of LSD in a FWD. If i'm wrong then its cuz of the different engineering. Now as i type this i see: Drives: 92' AWD talon Tsi. well there you go. lol
For the motor and tranny.
*its never a good idea to pull out the 2 major parts of your car together, its better to disconnect one, pull that one out and then the other. Just good knowledge from working on cars and such, there's no rush. If you have the time to pull out the motor of any reason then you are setting yourself up for some long hours of fixin' might as well not half ass anything nor rush something.
Now some things you could do; i guess regarding the popping noise cuz im not too confident talkin about the other things.
*Jack your car up, start moving the rear driver side wheel, give it a ful rotation forward, notice for any noises, then same thing backwards. Try to "feel" and locate where the noise is, use your senses to hep determine where the problem maybe and go from there.
On the shafts part; If the closest store has your shafts and is two hours away see if they can be shipped out to you, or better yet get a buddy and go on a lil road trip. Once i had to drive out to Bum Fucked Egypt for a few parts for my 944s in a junk yard to get the right pieces. Remember, all the blood, sweat and tears you put into your car will be that much more awarding when everything is going smoothly =]
Have a great weekend and gl bro. Hit us back with what the problem was.
