I changed the trans filter on my 97 Montero full size and it seems that the recommended oil amount causes over filling. Anyone gone through this? I put about 5 1/2 quarts in and it's up on the dipstick.
Hi there
You must be driving either the 2800 or the 3500 Montero with an auto tranny to require this capacity. The Manual trans uses only 3.7 liters. I believe the volume indicated that you have not fully drained out the oil left in the pipes and cooler coils.
I have changed mine a coupla times before. Just drain the oil, then tighten the sump nut. Refill thru' the dipstick (transmission's!) using a funnel with a suitable tube until oil overflows thru' the weep hole next to the sump. DO NOT OVERFILL.
- To check for the oil level, drive around to warm up the engine.
- Park on level surface
- With engine idling, depress the brakes and move the tranny lever thru' all positions (P to L), stopping momentarily at each position.
- Move lever to N.
- Remove dipstick and wipe clean.
- The fluid level should always be between the two marks on the dipstick.
Note:
Always use "DIA QUEEN ATF-SP", or "ATF DEXRON II" automatic transmission fluid when replinishing. I sometimes top up or replenish with X-1R Auto Trans oil. No complains so far.
