Got a wierd issue and I am not sure where to start looking. When I "get on" the gas in my 92 TSi, I feel a vibration when the rear hunkers down. ONly when the boost hits over 10lbs and you acceellerate hard do you feel it. Now, I know the rear tires could use a balance, but the issue happens in every gear. I was thinking it could be a rear suspension or bearing issue. Wasn't sure if anyone else had experienced it.

you can check the wheel bearing to see if it bad, jack the rear tire of the ground, e-brake NOT apply, you might have to do this laying down, hold one of your hand on something solid next to the back of the wheel bearing, not moving part off course, turn the wheel with your other hand, or you can have an assistance to help turn the wheel, spin it fast and feel the wheel bearing with your hand, if the wheel bearing is bad you will feel it, depends on how bad, if it really bad you will feel it really rough when the wheel spinning

I was kinda thinking about that too, but there isnt any noise (have done this already). BUt, I do hear a jingle from the rear when hitting bumps. Wonder if the ball joints or links back there are worn. Or maybe the bearings have play but spin fine.

when you have the car jacked-up, try to wiggle the wheels and see if you find anything weird

Jack the car up and do the following tests:

1) Check ball joints - place one hand on the top of the wheel and one hand on the bottom. Try to wiggle the wheel. If there is any play (top-bottom) then, your ball joint for the wheel in question is shot.

2) Check tie rod ends - Place one hand on one side of the wheel and the other hand on the other side and wiggle. If there is any side-side motion, then your tie-rod end for that wheel is bad and needs replaced.

3) Check Drive Axles - First, visually and physically check the boot for any tears or damge of any kind. If the boot checks out, proceed to remove the axle and then remove the boot. Make sure there is grease in the boot. Also, with the boot off, check for any play in the CV Joint itself. If there is, replace the joint (You will normally have to replace the entire axle assembly, since I haven't been able to find anyone who sells just the joint by itself).

4) Wheel bearings will make some sort of noise if they are on their way out. You should hear a "hum" while driving if they are going bad. If you don't hear anything, then this is most likely not your culprit.

Check those 4 things and report back.

EDIT: Wait.. you said REAR wheel.. well.. this simple fact voids checks 1) and 2) since hte rear wheels don't have these... lol

EDIT: How is your tire pressure? Is it all even? Also, make sure your wheels are properly balanced and not bent in any way.

I wondered about the tires too. I know I get a bit of vibration around 65-70. Also, it was real bad at 50 when I discovered they were low. I am thinking I will replace the rears anyway since the tire is normally a problem if you get a vibration when tire pressure is low. I expect a loose/mushy ride, but not a vibration like a loose wheel.

I haven't really looked at the rear suspensions on the AWD models. If no ball-joints then maybe bad links?

This only started after I swapped rims with my son's talon. So I am voting for tires until proven otherwise

Yes. Origianl 1990 TSi rims. Got them from my son's newly purchased TSi.

Probabaly just need balanced, or something simple like one or more of the lug nuts are loose or the tire pressure is uneven.

Baalanced all the tires (one was a mother. I had to add weights all over the place). Vibration thill there under power. So, I removed the stock 7.5" rims and tires and put on my Kelly's with the 8.5" Probe GT rims. I balanced each one, vibration is still there. Noticed some brake hardware (a clip on one side) missing from a caliper allowing the brake bad to free float and rub too much). I will replace all that and check again. Suspension looks good, but it could be the culprit.
