About midway on my 2003 Galant GTZ, probably near where the cat is, a part that looks like a heat shield fell off on the highway. I couldn't recover the part, but it had been dangling a little bit for a day or so. I had intended to take it in but I was waiting till today.

Is this in fact a heat shield for the cat? And is it necessary to replace? Or are the mechanics going to talk me into replacing the entire cat?

There doesn't appear to be any change in exhaust noise levels so I'm pretty sure it isn't an integral part of the cat or the exhaust system.

Any help would be appreciated. Like I said, I don't have the part.

Arent on that american model there are 2 catalytic converters right at the heads as part of the exhaust manifold. Its likely a heatshield. NOt that crucial but effective for detering heat on surrounding objects
