I have a 2003 Eclipse Spyder GT with the 3.0 L V6 and manual transmission. The check engine light has come on and the code indicates that bank 2 sensor 2 is bad. I had the diagnostics reset and the light came back on - just had to make sure.... :)

Questions:
1. I believe this sensor is on the side of the engine facing the firewall, underneath the exhaust manifold.
Is that correct? and how easy is it to change? Can I do it myself? If yes, do I need any special tools? (I guess that's really 4 questions)

2. Where's the best place to purchase the sensor? Is there a specific part number I need to look for? Do I need to get an OEM part, or is there an alternate manufacturer who makes high quality parts?

I'd like it to be as inexpensive as possible, but still be dependable as well.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

this is where alot of guys get their O2 sensors.

http://www.oxygensensorwholesale.com

i haven't had to replace my sensors yet so i couldn't tell you the part number. i also couldn't tell you how to install them. i couldn't find a how-to on doing it either. check out the 3G service manual posted at the top of the forum. it could give you some ideas on part numbers and how to replace them.

because they are installed in the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter, which contracts when cool, the oxygen sensor may be very difficult to loosen when the engine is cold.

all modles have 2 oxygen sensors which is located upstream of the catalytic converter and a downstream oxygen sensor which is located at the outlet pipe of the catalytic converter.

there is an oxygen sensor scocket, it has a cutaway so you can install it with the wireharness sticking out the side of the scocket.

here is a pic of the oxygen tool:

Thanks a lot. I've got the service manual now, and it doesn't look totally impossible. Maybe I'll give it a shot. Will see if I can just get that tool from autozone on their loaner program. Hopefully I won't need it again. :)

I tried http://www.oxygensensorwholesale.com
but they only have the sensors for the 2002.

Would anyone know if the 2002 and 2003 would be the same? If not, would anyone know of another location to buy the sensor for the 2003.

Thanks,
Steve

Not to be a pest, but I just wanted to confirm that I was correct that Bank 2 Sensor 2 is on the right side of the engine (facing the firewall) on the bottom?
Thanks!

Nevermind. I got it. It was the one on the bottom of the radiator side. All fixed now. I used one of the Bosch universal sensors. A little bit of work to get it connected, but cheaper than buying the OE version. Like jason45 said, it was a pain to loosen. Nothing a pair of vice grips and a hammer couldn't fix. Thanks for the help! :liebe011:

You need a special tool (deep socket size 22mm), other people state 7/8, but it didn't work for me. I almost stripped the sensor from bank one which is the one on the manifold closest to the top of the engine next to the firewall. the deep socket won't fit unless you actually break the sensor by grabbing the tip where the wires come out and pulling it apart. I bought a bosch 4 fire at pep boys. You'll have to use the old connector of the one you removed. Let me know if this helps.

The oxygen sensor measures your air/fuel ratio mix based on what it senses in the exhaust. when one goes bad, it goes to a computer stock ratio. this will not hurt your car,If stock, in anyway except gas mileage. Because one sensor is down the comp. sends a message stopping the others and goes to the stock ratio. I had a cold air intake on mine and when the sensor went bad it would chug every now and then because of the amount of air going into the engine, the fuel ratio could barely keep up. But like i said earlier, if its stock you shouldn't have a problem driving it around. if you have upgrades like mine, it might chug every now and then but nothing more than that. Hope this helps, Jer.

This might sound like a stupid question, but I need to replace Sensor 1 Bank 2 (Before Pre-Cat on radiator side). When I go to order the Bosch part, they have a Before Cat 'Front' and Before Cat 'Rear'. I would assume that I need the 'Front' meaning radiator side. Is that right? Just want to make sure before I order this thing.

hey guys.

i had the machine pull up that code for my car but i havent fixed it. My problem is that the temperature needle goes all the way to the H for hot. it does it at idle and when its runnin. can this be caused by the sensor being bad? i replaced the thermostat and they flushed the radiator 2 years ago.

I'm a little confused because when I pulled code from the car it said that Bank 1 Sensor 2 was malfunctioning. Now is that the sensor that's visible against the firewall if you're standing on the passenger side looking down?
