My Mitsubishi Space Wagon has started making strange engine noises and in low gear the driver's seat base vibrates. I thought at first it would be an exhaust system problem but a visual check shows little rust and no sign of leaks. With the bonnet open, when the engine is idling there are regular (not loud) tapping/knocking sounds coming from it. Goes away when you race the engine.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Hi, If your vehicle is an automatic transmission, does the noise only occur when in drive, or when the RPM is around 700-850. If so then I have the same problem and so far after 3 visits to the garage no-one can get close to diagnosing the problem.

Try changing the auto fluid and filter. If it has been changed fairly recently, were the cooler pipes flushed ? It may be a poor/dirty oil or blockage problem.

i've experience the tapping sound from the engine few months back. The mechanic suggest either change the oil to syenthetic or change all the 16 valves. I was told that the valves has lost its abilkity to return (Spring return) and produced tha tapping sound. I've changed all 16 valves and problems solve.
