2000 Mitsubishi Chariot 2.4 Gdi, Engine Jerking & Power Loss

Hi,

I just bought the 2000 Mitsubishi Chariot 2.4 GDi few months back and using it for quite some time now. After a few months of driving it, i notice that the engine starting to give a funny sound which cause the engine to die off, but still manage to run on the road. The engine stall during idling. Due to this problems, i send it to do an engine check up and the mechanic do a diagnose on it. He explain that might be some of the spark plug was faulty. I took his word for it and change all 4 (four) pieces to a new one (Mitsubishi original plugs) - cost me about RM300 (Approx. USD80). It went well for a few weeks and the problems start to come back again. But this time less that the previous problems.

The lattest one is that the engine was sounding like some misfiring sometimes and have a jerking effect. When i ram the paddle/ throttle the engine the engine sounds like there was a tiny explosion in the engine (Sound like tapping on the engine) and cause the car to run slower (loss of power) This usually happen when i'm driving at the speed of 100 - 140KM/hr. But sometimes happen at a low/ normal speed.

Could it be due to the spark plugs faulty, A/T oil need to change, leaking engine (cyl. head gasket), or somethig else. Could it be because of the fuel injector blocked?

If anyone here knows what is the cause and any solution please post it out or email me.

Thank You All
:crying:

I am having the same problem (as many other GDI owners) with my 97 Diamante GDI...Made any progress on troubleshooting? I am going to begin with the fuel system.

I havent start with the troublehooting yet but there are some areas to look at particularly on the Coils - continiuty not good, fuel injector - block injector, fuel filter - dirty filters & spark plug - burned plugs. This things has been suggested by a friend of mine and i'm looking forward to check on it soon.

Anyone had the same problems, if you dont mind share the info's on the forum. Thanks. :liebe011:

Hi, I have just joined the problem after buying a 2000 spacewagon gdi.
After 2 days I have started to experience similar problems.
I have spoken to the local Mitsi dealer, who are happy to take my money(lots of money) and sort out the problems.
Firstly engine reves falter on idle and occasionaly die out waiting at lights etc,my local garage tells me it common for Mitsi as they run so lean and are affected by cold air.
They suggest that it could be effected by a build up of carbon in the throtle intake, Mitsi want a lot of money to clean it, however WD40 and a bit of effort gives the same results, so im trying this first.
2nd problem is intermitent tappet noise that dies when revs increase.
I suspect its oil related and can be cured by a complete oil change with an additive, slick 50 or similar.
The poor idiling I think is also effecting the performance and fuel ecconomy 200 miles on £35 of petrol not very good.
Lastly there is an unidentified oil leak somewhere at the rear of the engine, it was noticed by my mechanic during the mot.
He has had a quick look but cant find the source. Has any one else had similar problems? if so how did you resolve them?
Lots of info on this site/forum lots of people having probs with one of the most reliable car companys UMH!

Your engine will need a de-coke, in the UK they use almond shells, these are blasted into the bore. This is a common problem with Chariots not firing correctly or stalling and is caused by the type of oil used in the manufacture of the injectors, do this and your car will then run perfect

Is there an easier and cheaper way of cleaning injectors and bores ? Would the good old fashioned cold water spary on the inlet work, or redex in the bores ? Don't want to strip my engine down or pay for someone else to do it.

I will be cleaning out throttle body this weekend and changing oil to decent synthetic. Poor oils don't do this engine any favours - remember the black death rpoblems of the late 70's, early 80's ?

Tried injector cleaner in fuel and replaced air filter that was clogged. Seems to be a bit more economical now. Mine idles roughly at the moment, something my 1.8gdi carisma never did. With only 45000 miles on the clock, I'm loathed to do a rebuild !

Colin,

How was your cleaning going on? Any luck & improvement on changing the oil?

Not cleaned yet - too much to do around the house and daughters car needed new brake discs and pads.

Changed the air filter - seriously clogged and dirty, which has helped the responsiveness. Hope to get to do the oil change and throttle body cleanout either this weekend or next weekend.

I have been geeting around 20-23mpg around town - wish I'd got the diesel shogun for that economy. Hopefully I'll get it sorted soon !

Does anyone know, or has anyone tried a 'redex' in the bore through the plug hole bore clean ? I am happy to clean the injectors myself, but don't need the hassle of a rebuild. Anyone got any ideas ? How much is the almond shell blast ?

Finally got round to it !

Changed oil and filter - no cheapo oil, full synthetic - £20 trade for 5 litres.
Took off throttle body valve and cleaned it up. From intake hose side, it wasn't too bad. On the other side of the butterfly flap, it was horrendous. More soot and rubbish than in a chimney !! Half an hour of rubbing and 2 litres of brake cleaner later, it was as clean as possible.

Took her for a run afterwards - engine much more responsive with less surging when pulling away. Didn't hunt at idle at all.

A job well done - took about 2 hours for all the work, and I cleaned all the electrical contacts on all sensors and actuators too !

Next job is to test the lambda sensor and possibly replace it. Someone told me I'd have to take drivers seat out to do it. He was obviously talking out of rear end, there's enough room to shelter a family underneath, so should be a doddle. Wioll keep you all updated when done.

With reference to the removal of the seat for the lambda sensor, I thought you could get away with it.

However once you start, it is incredibly hard to remove the carpet to get underneath to the connector. So you really have no choice but to remove the front drivers seat. Only takes a few minutes, dont forget to disconnect the airbag cable though before you lift it up.

Damn hunting at idle is back. Apparently, according to a volve mechanic, it's a good idea to disconnect battery for 5-10 minutes after cleaning throttle body so it can recalibrate. Will try that soon.

Going to hit it with Ecotec powerboost - supposed to be in-situ decoke and has a lot of good reviews on it. Wondering if anyone else has tried it on a GDI ?

If it is back in stock this weekend, I will be using it Sunday - £28 a can and takes 8 minutes under the bonnet, then a 10 minute drive. Will let you all know how it goes.

If this doesn't sort it, think I might sell the damn thing and get a diesel Seat !

Regards

I used 10k boost on mine which is basically the same stuff. It costs £25 a can, although halfords stock it now so it is easy to get hold of.

8min in air intake and then 10min drive keeping revs up.

Make sure you spray if after the MAF sensor or it will destroy it.

I borrowed a local garages 4 gas analyzer due to my high exhaust emissions and to be honest it didnt make any real diference on mine as it was already seriously coked up. Was worth a try though before whipping the head off for a clean-up.

Also tried redex, but that just made the engine run worse.

I'm from East M'sia (Sarawak), any site/Links that i can order parts online?...Any related sites (M'sia) for this particular model?

I think all M'sian GDI users should get together & flow some usefull info's on the cars in terms of sites, manuals, news etc

Cheers

I am dring this GDI too and got almost the same problem as yours.
It seems no boby completely solved the jerking problem, either at idle speed or running for a while.

I found my car jerking since last year while it was in its idel speed, after running for about 10 mins. It jerked seriously then the engine was dead. It was moved to the car workshop and my friend used a special car monitor (like a PC) to check the error code.
He told me it was the high presure gas oil pump problem. The pressure was not enough. It cost me over US770 for such pump, excluded labour cost. I didn't bought the pump and my friend just help me to clean the whole air intake which cost US70 only.

My car dead again today with the same problem. I am really headache now.

Attached File  Ignition_Coil_pic.doc ( 293.5k ) Number of downloads: 381
Hi all,

I've solved my jerking problems when i clean my engine compartment. I have found that one of the coil having low insulation, meaning that the spark leak from the ignition coil insulation. I've patched up the leakage with a heavy duty epoxy (temporary). It totally solve the jerking problems which initially i think not enough spark to burn fuel.

To check the low insulation, you have to hear the engine or you can do this during night time/ in the dark. You can actually see there is spark coming out. Please refer to photo attached (Ignition coil pic.doc). Good Luck!

Hi all, this is my first time here so be kind. I have the 2.4 GDI Chariot 1996 with similar problems, idle is rough slow of mark and doesnt change gear when in auto until revs get to 4k or above runs in tiptronic great, took it to a garage and he cleared engine light fault by just disconnecting battery for 15 seconds then it ran perfectly for 5 mins then back to original fault. After that he said code fault said it was the EVT ( electrinic throtle valve motor ,part of throttle body)very high price for new one he said Mitsi dealer had 7 in stock which is rare so must be common faulty item. I have since cleaned throttle body with brake disk cleaner again disconnecting battery for 15 seconds and it ran great for 5 mins arrggg. what i dont understand is if when battery is disconnected it runs great how can this be a electrical or machanical fault. any suggestions my unhappy GDI brothers. ps changed oil and filter ran an engine flush first used 10W-30 with an oil addative for tappet noise but now its even noisier what am i doing wrong, guy at shop said fully synth would be to thin for my high K's 140k.

thx for any help
