I own a 1979 challener with 35,000 miles on it. the car sat for 14 years in a barn( no joke) the engine runs fairly well but the internals are just about shot and its going to go BOOM soon. I looked under the hood and it is cavernous!! in there. Did chrysler have the engine compartment engineered to accept a V8?,the world wonders.I did some quick measurements between the strut towers and so forth and discovered that a 318V8 will fit in there nicely.Even better a strong V6 would do the trick.Has anyone considered such a swap and if so what problems were encountered.

318 will fit, if you go this route use a rear sump
oil pan(340,360 only but wil bolt to 318, all LA series
engines are the same except bore, stroke)
best bet would be this new 4.7L v8 it has the same
torque as the recently replaced 5.9L. smaller in size
with mopar parts to support it. fit issues should be
minimal. 3.9L,3.7L v6's drop in no problems other than
engine mount up or oil pan clearence.
the 3.9Lv6 was based off the LA series v8. similar
problems might exhist there.
the 3.7Lv6 is based off the new 4.7Lv8 engine.
i havent seen either of the 2 newer engines out of an
engine bay. so i dont know how their mounts are configured.
mid block mount/front block mount(early v8 mopar location)
if these newer engines are the same as the new hemi
(almost a mid block style, simialr to chevy) just drop in a new hemi crate
engine.
