Hi, I have a 94 Eclipse (1.8L) and it will only start sometimes. When it doesn't start it won't even crank over but I can push start it. Otherwise when it wants to it cranks over and starts up just fine. People keep telling me that it might be the battery but I know it's not because I had it tested. Has anyone else heard of this ever happening or possibly know what the problem may be?

check all electrical connections for corrosion. The wires may not be tight on the battery. Is there any power to the car when the key is in the "on" position?

I checked and cleaned the battery terminal connections. I could not check the connections to the starter itself though. It is on the back of the engine under the intake manifold and I can't get to it. The car does have power when it won't start though, the lights, stereo, etc. all come on. I'm thinking it might be the starter relay but it still seems strange to me that sometimes it will start and sometimes it won't. I would think if it was the relay, starter, or solenoid it wouldn't ever start. I'm about to give in and take it somewhere to be looked at.

if there are no loose wires the next time this happens, try tapping the starter lightly with a hammer while someone trys to crank it. (please make sure it is in park or out of gear, just in case) if it cranks when you tap it, the solenoid is bad and needs to be replaced.

believe it or not it could still be the battery. If you have a friend that will let you take their battery out of their car and try it in yours. I had a battery that did something similar. everything worked but wouldn't start till I changed the batt.

Thanks everybody. If anyone has a car like this you probably know how hard it is to get to the starter. I cut my hands all up getting to it but I found out that one of the bolts on the connections appearently vibrated off or something. It wasn't even there. I replaced it for 30 cents and it's fine now. I'm dumb for not checking the obvious and push starting it for a couple days but I guess I learned a lesson. Again, thank you everyone.

don't worry about it. I know a guy that push started a tempo for 6 months  the funny part about it is, he is a mechanic at a ford dealership

He legs must have been rock hard at the end of the 6 months. I didn't do it near that long and it was kind of sad how easy it was getting. It's a nice quick little workout.

definately, he was always searching for grades or hills to park on. he would park over 100 yards away and walk to where he was going if it was on a hill so he didn't have to push  then it blew up (might be because he drained most of the oil, threw a brick on the gas pedal and walked away, but we aren't totally sure  )

has your problem gone away? or it hasn't done it again yet?

yeah, I put that nut on the electrical connection to the solenoid and it's fine now. I still wonder how it could have just vibrated off. There is about 180k on the odometer, that may have something to do with it.
