Hello,
The engine indicator lamp on my P reg Carisma came on this morning after I had been driving for about 2 minutes. I pulled over and switched off and consulted the handbook to see what the orange lamp indicated. It said "if it illuminates while the engine is running, there is a problem in the emission control system. Contact your nearest authorized Mitsubishi dealer".

Can anyone offer me any suggestions as to what might be the problem.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Peter

On the basis that it may be of some help to others I will answer my own question.

The most probable cause of the warning light being triggered in this manner is the failure of one of the sensors on the engine management system. There is a sensor on the inlet and the outlet side of the engine. If either of these fail then usually you can limp home on greatly reduced power. If the engine won’t start, as in my case, it’s unlikely to be one of these sensors.

There is also another sensor on the camshaft which tells the engine management system where in the timing cycle the engine is currently positioned. If this sensor fails then the engine won’t start. This was my problem. It needed Mitsubsi diagnostics to find this out.

I had the same problem one morning (sudenly the lamp went on, but everything works fine)but the solution came with no diagnostics.

First of all, in talking to the dealer, I found out it's a pretty common thing that happened even on a brand new car, and no diagnostic would show any irregularities.
Solution as I was said:
The thing is, if you, just like me, live in countries outside of US, or EU, watch carefully where you'll fill your tank. It's cheaper for them to buy and sell the poor quality petrol.

However, my problem was that the day before I drove it few times, for short term every time. The temp was pretty low, and there was much of condense in the exhaust system, so the Lambda went crazy. As engine worked I watched the stain below the exhaust getting bigger and bigger. I know that is a common thing. But not the stain of radius of a half of sq.meter!
It never happened again.
