QUOTE(Slacker @ Apr 24 2006, 09:48 PM) no i was talking about STOCK cars under the 2000 year mark. and i have seen and tested it. there is something that does not allow you to go over a certain speed even if you car says it can do 180 or more. thats what i was driveing twards you mean a speed governor? some cars came with an electronic speed cut, others did not. most chevys of that era were governed at around 95 mph. (not sure about there sports cars like the camaro, or the vette.) I believe the nissan 300zx was governed, but don't know for sure, I just remember my college roomate babbling about cutting purple wire 32 all the time to get rid of it... Hell, all the jags are limited to 155. I think they still are... That's not every car made before 2000, though... far from it. ;)

OK. Since so many of you don't seem to grasp what stops your car from accelerating I'll explain it. You are limited by three possibilities: your gear ratios, your wind resistance/horsepower, or an electronic governor. Any one of these three stops you from continually acclerating. An electronic governor can be by-passed through various means, but the other two are insurmountable. The gear ratio limit (like that found on the new 2006 Corvette Z06, whose bhp/drag is capable of going faster than its 198mph gear limit) is slightly easier to compensate for. Your car can only spin its crankshaft so fast (measured in your car's RPM) to spin the transmission gears to make the axles propel the car. Bigger gear ratios allow for higher top end but lesser acceleration. This, however, will not over come the drag problems. In other words, you can make your gear ratios acceptable to reach 300mph, but if your car cannot overcome its drag, then you are still limited at the same top speed you have now. For instance, take the Bugatti Veyron (the current world's fastest car), it is limited to about 252mph. This car has a 16-cylindar, quad-turbo engine producing 1000bhp. you'd think that a car with so much power would be faster. Especially since the previous record-holder was the Koenigsegg CC-R with a "mere" 800hp. The CC-R could go 242mph (one mph faster than its predecessor, the 650bhp McLaren F1). With 200bhp more than the CC-R and 350 more than the F1, why is it able to only go 10mhp faster than the former and only 11 more than the latter? The simple answer is drag. Your Cd (cofficient of drag) is determined through wind tunnel tests and is the final limit to your ability to go any faster. In testing, VW came upon a limit of only being able to go 244mph with the Veyron and determined that they would either need to fix the aerodynamics of the car or add 200 more bhp to overcome that wind resistance. 200bhp to reach their 400km/h (252mph) goal when they were only 8mph short! This is a stark example of how strong wind resistance is. Cd grows with speed, too. The faster you go, the more power it takes for each small gain in velocity. It works at an accelerating rate to overcome your car's ability to gain speed.
