Hi Members

I own a Mitsubishi Chariot Grandis 2.4l. Recently I noticed that the exhuast fume of my car seems rather rich. There is no warning lights on the dash board that would give me a clue to the problem.

My car has clocked in 94,000km. The fuel consumption is 7.3km per litre in the city. On the highway travelling a 100 to 110kmh, the car is giving me 8.5km per litre. I have no standard to compare the fuel consumption to see if this is good or bad.

Is there anyone out there who can help?

Regards

Vincent

Hi,
I'm from Malaysia, have owned a (Jap imported, reconditioned) Chariot for 2.5yr.
So far, the average consumption of my Chariot is about 8.0~8.5 km/liter for urban cycle, and about 10 km/liter for high way cruising at 110~120km/h.

Did you get your figures straight from the MMCS screen? or is it your own calc?
I get mine from doing my own maths.

From my experience thus far, my Chariot's engine would get sluggish after some time and i got a bit annoyed. Then i tried out STP Complete Fuel System Cleaner, and it seemed to work its effect and some power was restored and the ride smoothened. Have just added my 3rd pack of STP Complete, and it seems alright.

I heard that GDI engine is notorious for building up carbon deposit in the innards.
So i think regular service or fuel treatment is the way to go.

The perennial problem i've been having is the noisy tek tek tek of the tappets.
Is your engine smooth sounding?

cheers.

Hi Sichung

I am actually a Singaporean and have moved my family and car to Perth, Australia.

The figures I got of my car's fuel consumption are from my own calculations.... you know....obtained by filling gas to the brim and recording the distance travelled method. Must try your method of using STP Complete fuel system cleaner and monitor my car's fuel consumption again. I am told one can also get rid of carbon built up stepping up the engine up to 4000 - 5000 rpm for a couple seconds. Is this a good method for carbon clearing.

But I am still puzzled by the rather rich exhuast fume from my car. Naturally I suspect the fuel air mixture is out hence causing the unsatisfactory fuel consumption. What do you think?

My car like yours also has the tappet noise. It usually happens during start up in the morning but goes off after the engine has been running for a while. I noticed the type of engine oil also affect the tappets noice in my car. The 10w-40 engine oil tends to bring about less of the tappet noise for my car than say 15w-40.

Regards

Vincent,
Your fuel consumption seems similar to mine. I too experience rather uncomforting fumes from my exhaust which I thought was due to the fact that I removed the catalytic converter but then I read somewhere it could be due to the extreme lean-burn mode of the GDI engine. Have you removed your catalytic converter?

No I have not. I was wondering if the low fuel consumption is caused by a faulty sensor like the O2 sensor but then again such a fault would trigger one of the warning lights in the instrument panel of the car. right?

Vincent,
logically it should but from what i learn from my mechanic friend certain cars won't trigger the 'Check' lite if the O2 sensor is faulty. Try removing the battery terminals for 10 minutes to reset the ECU and see how it goes from there. Don't too sure if the sensor can be cleaned or otherwise.

[[SIZE=14]SIZE=7]I would say that you are doing pretty well for a 2.4 engine , even if it is a Direct injection system . I have a 1998 Mitsubishi grandis super exceed and I am getting a little better than your post says . My in in dash monitor reads that I am getting 8.5 - 9.4 (Kilometers per litre ) in the city . I think that is very good and have no complaint at all on this . I have not had the opportunity to get out on the free :amen: ways yet , but I would imagine it would be somewhat better .

I think this engine is very delicate and difficult to adjust because there is no carborator intake jets . You might be well to just leave it alone ....

Cheers and happy motoring in your great car .... I love mine ...........just as a reminder please be aware that if you change battery or dis-connect your battery .It will require that you re-set the NAVI monitor , and to do so requires that you insert the CD that came with the car - keep it safe some place where you can find it easy ..... big problem to many members here on the forum ....

Drop a line if you ever have a need for a re-set CD disk .....OK ? :amen:

Is it advisable to remove the catalytic converter for better fuel consumption or not?

Anyone has any experience on fuel consumption after remover the cat?

Hi
Regarding Fuel consumption! i thought i had or have had a problem with the oxygen sensor....having just failed the emissions test at the last MOT, i have a 2.4 Chariot Grandis Super Exceed with 128200 KMs on the clock. Before the MOT i had been getting a return of about 8.6km per ltr (as shown on screen) in town and a recent round trip to warrington 800kms of 12.7 to 13.4KM per ltr.

Only as a give it a go sort of thing i put in the Redex as per the instructions on two tank fills and disconneted the battery for some 10 mins to reset the ECU and set off once again on a required round trip to warrington (another 800kms).....the results are remarkable.
In town still sitting at 8.6 to 8.9km per ltr but as for cruising at 55 to 60 mph i now have a return of 15.4 to 17.4km per ltr.....and MOT well no problem this time with emmissions.
I am just wondering if a combination of a really good run to de-coke the CAT the redex and reset done the trick.

Just a thought before you spend a fortune on a CAT or sensor.
