Hi, I have a 1996 FTO GPX. Like you its been a dream but recently started cutting out in neutral (stalling) and being a problem cold starting as you describe. I'm looking to pass the car on and a guy came round and tugged the accelerator cable to stroke the engine up/down. This porblem started after he did this but he is an experienced mechanic and convinced me this could not have caused the problem.

Two garages belive it it the ECU which needs reprogramming. I am a bit cynical as the problem feels mechanical. A friend suggested disconnecting the battery and I shall try this (NB the garage tried chaging the air flow on the solenoid valve and but this caused more problems, revving to 2000 in idle, unpredictably, bucking bronco effect in 4th to 3th chanigng down).

yes its your ecu i have just had same problem cost £159 to repair better than over £1100 from mitsibushi!!!!!
It solved my problem after changing stepper motor wax stat valve and temp sensor in total coast me over £600.
Sold car now happy to see back of it.
Reseting battery won't help i would take it to an ecu specialist i used motec in poole dorset sorry haven't got the number.
