Whats Up Everybody

I live in Toronto and drive a 2003 Mitsu Galant ES with 85,000km. Everytime I turn the tempurature knob from hot to cold a noise comes from behind the dash and remains for a minute, then goes away. My A/C & heat work fine I get cold & hot air its just the noise. I recently took it to a Mitsubushi Dealer and the technician heard the noise and told me my heater blower motor was blown. And also said if I don't fix it I can loose my heat and A/C. What! :puzzled: after 85,000km. Has anyone else had this problem? Can anyone else diagnose my problem with any suggestions? :liebe011:

I have a 2003 Galant with 60,000kms and have the same noise problem. Can it be the heater control motor? I noticed once that the air was blowing hot even though I had placed the dial on cold.

It sounds like you may have a different problem. But it may be the heater control motor. My problem is the hot/cold shut off valve is nosiy. I still get cold air once on cold and hot once on hot. You can take it 2 the dealer for them to diagnose, But be careful cause they may jack you on thr pricing :57:

How can i verify if it is the hot/cold shut off valve? is it easy to replace? not that i plan on doing it myself just so the dealer/garage doesn't jack me???

The way to check is when you turn the tempurature knob from hot to cold or cold to hot u hear a ticking noise that lasts for 30 seconds, then goes away. Note you should still be able to get cold and hot air with no problem. The cold/hot shut off valve isnt to bad in price but the labour. :offtopic: try $500-$600. The price is so much because the whole dash has to come out, everything. But like I was told from the Mitsu dealer as long as you can get hot or cold air your fine ignore the noise

first, the noise is a failing heater shut off motor. It WILL eventually stop working, leaving you with no heat.

the part is 170 bucks, and labor to install it is about 1.2 hours. So the estimate should be about 300 bucks to fix, plus or minus.
the whole dash does NOT have to come out, only a portion of it.

it is a common failure. I find it hard to believe that ANY mitsu dealer hasnt done several repairs of them in the past. there is even a technical news letter issues about this situation.

Ok, i have read all the way down the list and it sounds like everyone is talking about the same PART. my Heater control valve motor did the same thing. first it was the ticking and then in the dead of winter, i had no heat at all. the ticking for me went on for about a week before my heat failed completely. i was told from multiple auto shops it was my heater core... wrong! i found out from this site it was a common problem and it could be the motor. i bought the part from the dealer and had a local shop put it in for 350.00. i don't know how much a dealer will charge, but you might save money by purchasing the part and having someone who is familiar with Galants put it in. i think i paid about $65-$70 for the little tiny motor.... good luck

you got ripped off paying 350 bucks.
as I said, the labor is just over an hour. The dealer should charge about 130 bucks for the labor.

Hi all, im new to this.

Mines do the same thing with the noise but it last last for about ten seconds, but my thing is when I change the knob from cold to hot, it doesnt gets hot until whenever it decides. One time one winter I've gone serveral days without heater and then all of a sudden the heat came on. Do I have the same problem or could it be something much more severe? Also I have some other general concerns, if anyone can be kind and help me out with...Anytime i go 80+ mph and i hit the brakes the steering wheels shakes, i have already had my rear brakes down, appearantly they were bleeding...In any event, it hasnt solve the problem; also my left brakes lights are brighter than my right and I've already change the right before again with new ones, can anyone help me out please?

Appreciate the help! :)

I cannot add comment about the noise but I can say the unit looks simple just a white box with actuators that move to change where the heat or cooling comes from it could be that it just needs some lubrication / clean. The issue I had did not require me to remove the unit but I would think it would not be a big issue to recondition it other than the pain of getting it out.

I'll share my story of the heat going nuts thought it may help Purespeed. I was sorting out my O2 Sensor so I had removed parts of the dash to get to see what I was doing, inadvertently I pulled a black tube going between the box mentioned in this thread and my climate aircon controller on the dash.

This was the temperature vent tube attached between the controller and the cooler box I must have allowed air to get in from the sides anyway the system went nuts and would not hold a temperature mostly it would run hot no cooling at all until I sealed the tube ends with insulation tape and the aircon is now working correctly weird but it worked for me.

Find attached the diagrams of the damper hope this helps :).

Mine does the exact same thing. Sounds like a fan blade contacting a plastic shroud at high speed for about ten seconds and then it operates as usual. Only when switching from hot to cold or vice versa. But everything still works fine for the 4 months I've had it so I'm not worried, just annoyed
