Hi,

I sparingly drive my 2002 RS Eclipse with 54k miles on it. (2-3 times a week for about 10 miles each time)

I've noticed a strong fuel odor from the exhaust when I first start the vehicle and after I've driven it for a bit.

I don't notice odor eminating from other parts of the vehicle.

What issues are most probable for this case? I've read a post with an individual with pre-cat problems or fuel filter problems. Could this be related to the strong odor?

Thanks!!

You're running rich. That smell is unburnt fuel coming out of your exhaust. Has the car been back-firing at all?

You'll need to provide more information for anyone to guess what's causing you to run rich. Have you done any modifications to your car? Has the check engine light come on at all? Have you had the car serviced recently?

a FUEL odor, or rotten egg odor? the latter is VERY normal on just about every car on the planet, assuming you dont have any "check engine" lights on.
do you?

if not, dont worry about it, and try a different BRAND (NOT grade) of fuel.

No backfiring at all.
No mods to speak of and no check engine light has come on. Serviced ~2500 miles ago (standard service and nothing special) Oil is still clean looking.

No Sulfur smell, just fresh fuel. Just like when you overspill on you lawn mower.

Thanks for the quick response.

That's what I thought of when I read another member's posted problem with other issues.

He described it as a Pre-cat(?)

Thanks!!

I had this "odor" issue for a few years, and nobody could find what was wrong. When I took it in for a state inspection, that pointed out the problem - cam seal was leaking... Easy fix :)

What was the cost of the repair at that time?

Thanks!
