Hey yall,
My check enginre light is on and Ive read it with a code reader. it shows P0403 where

p=powertrain
0=generic
4=aux emission control
03=the fault section

According to the book that came with my code reader this is an exhaust gas recurculation circut malfunction.

I went threw all the steps in the " on line manual " ( thanks great info by the way) but everything checks ok?????

I clear the code and after two starts it comes back.... wtf?

Occasionaly after a couple of short trips it will go off for a start or two.

I realy guess this is going over my head but i like to "fix things" my self so I know its right. Any help or suggestions wold be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
HULA8585

Have you checked the gascap, if you don't close it 3 clicks like it says to it can throw that code. i had it happen before.

Hmm.. Well... I turn it till it clicks never realy counted... Suppose I could pay more attention. Is it possible for a gas cap to malfunction ??? How would ya test it ?? I guess if the as cap has something to do with it, it might be worth troubleshooting the evaprotive system....GRRRR !!!!

PO403 is an EGR code. your EGR system is malfunctioning.

you should get it checked out.

im having the same problem... if your familiar with the egr vacuum hoses... you can blow them out with an air compressor... the blower tip... if you dont have a compressor talk to your friends.... come up with a blower tip (sears... auto zone... the like.) then take those hoses off in the back of the engine... theres a lot of em... if you look at the bottom right of your hood there is a hose diagram, go from the egr valve all the way up to the exhaust, well take the hoses off blow the tubes, hoses then spray some carb cleaner, then blow it again, the circuit gets clogged with carbon, so it may need some maintenance, this way you can do it yourself, id suggest getting it done though.... much less of a pain in the ****

im gonna have to agree with that, i see that code all the time, and usually just run a good de-carb product (BG) through it and it cleans it all out... might have to take off the egr valve and scrub the ports out in the intake manifold if just the carb cleaner doesnt work.. :beer:

I just had to change the plugs and wires. That was fun by the way. I was getting the P0403 code so I took the EGR valve out cleaned it up and put it back on and the same code came back so i replaced it and it is still comeing up. this is making me very mad and if it was not the wifes car I would drive it were the 35W bridge used to be. Anyone got some ideas for me?????

If you go to the Service Manual link on the "3G Eclipse homepage" on this forum, it will answer your question. Go to Group 13B- Multiport Fuel Injection (MFI) 3.0L. portion of the manual. It has all the exact trouble codes listed in better detail then the booklet that comes with the diagnostic tool itself.

Turns out PO403 is a EGR solenoid failure. The fix is listed under another section of the online manual called Group 17- Engine and emission control. Go there for a solenoid vacuum check and resistance check. Hopefully this helps.
