Hi!

Swopping petrol to diesel is rather complex, due to the integration of electronics with engine type. You'll find several lights, switches in a diesel that is not in the petrol model, and vice versa. The guages, rev counter, odometer is marked for the one or the other.

I'd rather suggest you look at a slightly newer diesel model. It may appear more expensive initially, but when you add up the actual conversion cost, you'll be surprised. You may just find yourself with a newer model for less money...

Good luck either way!

Anton

they made a diesel pajero version, 2.3 without intercooler first (don't touch it) and then a 2.5 with intercooler (get that one)
maybe they're not in the usa but perhaps someome will import it for you?

For Gas to Diesel conversion for Mitsubishi you have three modles.

1. 4D55 non turbo producing about 2.3 liters of displacement

2.. 4D56 Turbo with Intercooler about 2.5 liters of displacement

3. 4M40 Turbo Intercooled engine about 3.0 liters of displace ment

You can search them at the junk yards or through engien importers.

I have always wanted a Montero Diesel for the thriftyness of it.

They were only imported into US in '86-87(?) in two door models.

Pajero's came with all the engines listed in the last post, but in other countries.
They came in LH and RH drive models. Germany has a LOT of Left Hand Drive models. They can be imported into the US, but only have a lot of modifications. They also have to meet EPA standards which is tuff for these engines, because they have never been in the US. To import a Pajero from Germany - rough cost = $600 shipping + $500 for licensed importer help + 2.xx% import tax + $5-9,000 in modification costs.
All of this is way too much.
Here is a cool site to see some of these Pajero's.

I have heard the cost of swapping a diesel for a non diesel can run big bucks.
Like was said before, there are a lot of wires for the petrol engine that have to be 'dummied' and a lot that have to be added for the diesel.

Toyota 4cyl 4runers are easier to swap out for the Toyota 2L-T motor, because it mates right up to the current trans.
HJ60 landcruiser, 1980-1989 were avail with diesels in them. Early ones get 30mpg. Later ones with 6cy diesel get 24mpg.

I'd be interested to here if anyone has done a successful swap in a Montero.

thx,
Sweli
