My Speedo has just stopped working, what would be the best process to determine what the problem is? I checked the gregorys manual but it seems to be one thing thats not covered..

Any ideas?

Sounds to me like the speedo cable might have broken. Best way is to just follow the cable from the back of the dash, then disconnect the cable at both the ends and check if when one end is turned, the other end also turns. I think normally the speedo cable ends up at the transmission, but I'm not entirely certain of that.

Regarding your speedo, three possibilities present themselves.

1. The speedo cable may have popped off the rear of your dashboard. Remove the cowling from the top, slacken off the dash screws and see if the end of the cable is clicked home.

2. The cable itself may have broken somewhere (less likely) Perform the above check, but unplug the cable from the dash and see if the core spins when the vehicle is in motion.

3. The cam at the gearbox end may have been stripped or rotated out of mesh. Above the gearbox there will be an insert where the cable enters. This is done up finger tight with the cable (albeit greasy). If you inscrew the cable you will see a small cotton reel sized insert that fits into the gearbox and is rotated (cam wise) until the cog at its tip is meshed with the gearbox interior. remove the mounting bolt and see if it is intact. If so, then put it back and rotate it untill it is fully meshed with the gearbox. Then re-attach the cable. The insert is (or was) available in different sizes to accommodate different wheel diameters for the vehicle. 14", 15" etc.

Good luck. Ian. from Drouin West.

CAD- Tell me about it.. its just one thing after another. I don't really want to give up though, so the rebuild is kind of looking like an option. Unfortunately..

Ian and Dave - Thanks guys, first fine day here when I can work on the van i'll follow your advice.. thing won't fit in my garage, its too high!

I'm looking at a price up for Recon, Transmission, Carby and Brakes at the moment. (Brakes need replacing too, surprise), and Im wondering if when the previous owner put the bigger wheels on he bothered to get the gear ratios changed.

Cheers again,

Caleb
