The steering wheel on my '90 eclipse vibrates while running at highway speeds. The car has brand new balanced tires. Brakes were maintenanced about a month ago. The wheel are a bit misaligned. Any body has any suggestions as to what parts should i check for damage?

if there id bent or damaged suspension components they can be extremely hard to see visually.best bet is to have a bodyshop with a laser alignment system check it out to make sure everything is where it should be and then get them to do the geometry on it(wheel alignments)

What can happen, I know by experience, is that some tyres, although brand new, can have varying levels of manufacturing quality. What that results in is some tyres may not be perfectly round.

Once over a certain speed (it was 80km/h for me) the steering wheel would vibrate.

i initially thought it needed a balance, so i got that done and the guys told me and showed me the tyre spinning, it wasn't round.

So i contacted the place i got them from and went back there they replaced one of the wheels. The rest were 'withing tollerance' so it still wasn't perfect, but certainly drivable.

Now after driving on the tyres for some time, i think they've worn a bit and got better.

Here are a few problems you might encounter:

1. Wheels improperly balanced (some places might only do static balancing, one set of weights in the middle, when what needs to be done is dynamic, or weights on the inside and outside of the wheel.)

2. Tires have cupping or feathering (more prone to road noise, especially run-flat tires)

3. Tie rod ends or ball joints wobbling (tie rod ends would cause steering wheel movement, ball joints would cause irregular wear)

4. If the wheel is misaligned enough, you should have a 4 wheel alignment done. Most dealers (mine included) or MAJOR tire places that replace all four tires will do an alignment for free or cheap.
