I have tried tightening, spraying with sylicone, checked PS fluid level, and nothing will make this squeel stop for more than like a block belt is not older then 3 months. any suggestions (the car had gone without the belt for about 6 months when the a/c locked up and was cheeper to cut belt than fix at time.)
it's a 1998 eclipse GS 2.0 NT 420a engine

thanks for any suggestions

My was squealing for about 3-6 months and ate 3 belts and i'm on my 4th one. I found out the problem for my car. The alternater belt was very loose and i thought it was a bearing was going bad. So i got myself a new alternater and belt install it. tight it up and i was good and at time i find out the alternater ajustment bolt back out at times.

This is most likely a bearing, i would change ot before it locks up. I think its easiert to go to a Junk Yard and buy a new AC compresor for about 50 bucks.

it can also be the bearing from the alternater, water pump, power steering, AC compresor, or the crank pulley is coming apart. so choose your pick

mine squealed like hell for quite a while and i fixed it by getting a new tensioner pulley for my ECU belt. the bearings had gone bad over time so the pulley didnt work very well and squealed and ate belts like crazy. i have no problem no with the new one. cost me 120$ tho.

I have the same problem. The damn thing just won't stop squealing. The delearship is telling me that it is the tensioner pulley, but the damn thing isn't even 6 months old. It started happening right after my engine replacement. I don't know what the hell the mecahnic did that would cause this but I am pissed. I don't even want to start replacing all the pumps and pulleys on that belt. Don't have the money for that kind of hoping type of fixing right now.

nice link. very possible on the 420 cars.

I think mostly it is too little tension, or belt quality. if you have an aluminum underdrive crank pulley or lightweight pulley they tend to squeal with cheaper belts. inspect the belt for shiny spots in between the ribs.
