The answer may differ between models - the newer he model, the more likely you can do things to it like changing between 2WD and 4WD in motion.
Mine is a 95 model, and it allows me the following:
1. I can shift it from 2WD to 4WD in motion up to 50mph. Obviously the risk increases along with speed, and I will therefore not change over at that speed, unless I HAVE to (eg. losing traction on dirt road).
2. I can drive in 4WD mode at any speed that 2WD allows. There again - you use 4WD for unpaved terrain or slippery paved roads - high speed in both cases is not advisable. It is "nice to know" that it can do high speed in 4WD, however.
CENTRAL DIFF LOCK: Remember - only use CDL off-road. From a safety point of view you SHOULD use it when off road, but you'll break it if used on paved road. A good test is to ensure it is only used where the surface allows some slipping / skidding of wheels - eg sand, mud, water. Disengage on solid rocks. Gravel is OK.
I only engage CDL at low speed, or ideally in standstill position.
NEVER CHANGE TO LOW RANGE IN MOTION.
Enjoy the ride!
