hi new to site so be gentle i brought a 1992 mitsubishi chariot about a couple of weeks ago and i have notice that it using a lot of petrol and when i am driving i can feel it change from 1st to 2nd but that as far as it goes i am doing 60 mph and the revs are on 4000 also fan belt is slipping and the lights on work but as soon as i turn my lights dashboard lights do not work and i cant see how fast i am going or how much petrol is left in the tank could someone please help thanks

hi i had the same problem . it's a soliniod it get stuck when the engine reaches running temp, the gearbox drops out of overdrive and gets stuck in 3rd gear and this will use more petrol hope this helps :)

could someone respond with a more specific fix on the solenoid ? would say my auto box runs normal half the time and the other half runs in 3rd gear with the same 4000 rpms at 60-62 mph. it does not want to shift to the next gear, but when it does the rpms go down to a normal 2500 rpm range.

wanted to find out what exactly it is i need to replace, maybe even part numbers or whatever i can get my hands on.

until i came across this thread i was thinking about doing a auto trannsmission flush/change and filter.

can anyone provide more information for me on this ?

I am having similar problems:

I have a 1997 Nimbus Auto. For 8 years and 120,000km I had no problems, but then the gearbox started playing up: changing gears by itself, sometimes at high speed, locking into a gear etc. I eventually has a recon gearbox installed and all was well for about 2 days. Now it is worse than ever. The mech who did it has gone out of business (not surprised, Jan!) so I need to start over.

I feel the problem is not gearbox but electronic (ECU?) but can get no-one to take me seriously. Can anyone out there help please !?
